Ultra-fast Performance for Tomorrow’s VPN Deployments
Business operations have become more mobile than ever. New and advanced business applications have also created demand for faster VPN performance, which legacy firewall and UTM appliances cannot satisfy. To keep up with the dynamic business environment, business networks today need to provide branch offices, chain stores and mobile employees faster remote access to headquarter resources. Moreover, they must do so without exposing company resources and customer information to threat and data breach.
ZyXEL’s new ZyWALL Series VPN Firewalls are business-grade VPN gateways purpose-built to deliver the fastest performance for multi-site VPN deployments. These high performance VPN Firewalls feature multi-core CPUs and are fine-tuned to deliver ultra-fast performance with up to 6 Gbps firewall and 800 Mbps VPN throughputs. The new ZyWALL Series VPN Firewalls also feature the most advanced VPN functionality—SHA-2 encryption, VPN HA and L2TP—for more secure, more reliable and more mobile VPN connectivity.
The new ZyWALL Series VPN Firewalls are designed with multi-core CPUs to deliver the fastest VPN and firewall performance on the market. High-speed networking performance is guaranteed with up to 6 Gbps firewall throughput and 800 Mbps VPN throughput—up to 15x the firewall performance and 4.4x the VPN performance of preceding models. Designed with completely new and advanced hardware platforms, the new ZyWALL Series VPN Firewalls deliver uncompromising performance for high-speed site-to-site and client-to-site VPN applications.

Faster processors today have greatly boosted the capabilities of attackers to decrypt VPN tunnels. Legacy VPN encryption algorithms like Message Digest 5 (MD5) and Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1) are no longer sufficient to guarantee secured external communications. Supporting the more advanced Secure Hash Algorithm 2 (SHA-2), the ZyWALL Series provides the safest VPN connections in its class and ensures maximum security for business communications.
The complete range of ZyWALL Series VPN Firewalls deliver reliable, non-stop VPN services with dual-WAN failover and fallback support. With two WAN connections—one primary and one for redundancy—the ZyWALL VPN Firewall automatically switches to the backup connection should the primary link fail, and automatically switches back to the primary connection once it is back online.
To support dynamic, mobile business operations in today’s BYOD (bring your own device) business environment, the ZyWALL Series VPN Firewalls offer unlimited business mobility with Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) VPN for mobile devices. The ZyWALL Series supports L2TP VPN on a wide variety of mobile Internet devices running the iOS, Android and Windows mobile platforms.
Virtual private networks provide businesses a secure and convenient way of sharing company resources with partners, customers, or employees on business trips. Yet typical VPN solutions are hard for non-technical users to configure, which greatly reduces their usability and convenience. The ZyWALL Series VPN Firewalls feature Easy VPN to provide auto-provisioned client-to-site IPsec VPN setup. A wizard is available with the ZyXEL IPsec VPN client software that automatically retrieves the VPN configuration file from the remote ZyWALL VPN Firewall and completes the IPsec VPN setup in 3 simple steps. ZyXEL’s Easy VPN lowers administration effort and allows partner, customers, or traveling employees to access company servers, email, or data centers easily and securely.

Pros:
This is our second Zyxel USG. The first one (a USG 100) was lost in a fire so this was our replacement. Here are a few items that sold me.
-updated multi-core processors (good vpn with little to no lag)
-100 IPSEC VPN and 25 SSL VPN default
-Built in WIFI AP management for 2 AP default (34 max)
-IDP, AV, Anti-Span, and content filtering (for added cost of course)
The newly added VPN wizard works great and cuts down setup time tremendously. Our last USG ran for eight years with nothing needed but the occasional firmware update (which are free) and I'm betting this one will be easily as good.
Cons: Boot times are still pretty long. Overall not much longer than other comparable devices but for much less $$$$$. Can be intolerant of power swings but any router of this type should be on a UPS anyhow.
Overall Review: Good router with great features for the buck. Other brands with these features cost much more and then you still have to pay extra for the VPN licenses etc.
Pros: Inexpensive compared to similar items.
Cons: Had lots of intermittent routing issues. Things would seem to work every now and again. A new firewall router resulted in all problems going away.
Overall Review: Yes, it was configured correctly.
Pros: Aluminium case and fan keep the router cool even under heavy network load. Plenty of features to play with. Setup is easy once you get past some of the weird configuration names (Static IP is IP/MAC Binding). Regular firmware updates.
Cons: Found out after owning the router for a month that it needs to see very stable power. Like...any other electronic device I have ever owned hasn't needed such a stable supply. If the lights flickered in the house because of a wind storm outside or something the router would lock up. Nothing else in the house missed a beat but even a slight power disturbance always took the router out. I fixed the issue by getting an in-line battery back up for the router. Haven't had the issue since.
Pros:
The SIP ALG works exactly like it should. Latency through the router is minimal if at all noticed. Both WAN's can be active simultaneously.
VPN works and lag is within tolerable ranges. Rack mounted, price, high performing CPU
Cons: A little slow to boot, but given how much this router can do, its not really a con.
Overall Review: Tech support is VERY helpful in getting configs resolved and bugs corrected in reasonable time.
Pros:
- Affordable
- Solid construction
- Extensive features, very flexible
- Fast!
Cons:
Virtual WANs are limited to 4. Do not mistake with VLANs.
Does not tag VLANs but does recognize the tags and can shape traffic based on that.
Overall Review: I have this unit in conjunction with HP1910-48port serve 300Mbit fiber to a building with 50+ computers, 40+ IP phones, and numerous WiFi clients. Basically, a multi-tenant setup. 2 Exchange servers, Direct Access, VPN, etc. Never skips a beat. In the middle of the work day, I never see the CPU go above 10%. This thing is a beast!
Pros: Very fast, great local DNS, static DHCP, reliability, easy VPN, and most of all many traffic reports even per IP.
Cons: It has a fan.
Overall Review: At 57Mbps the CPU is so idle, I doubt it matters if the fan works.

Pros: Lots of features. Can be a bit of chore to configure.
Cons: IPSec VPN PSK is limited to 32 characters. So totally useless when trying to establish a site to site VPN with a Cisco that has a PSK longer than 32 characters.
