4 out of 5 eggsAwesome deal

This review is from: Harman Kardon AVR 1710 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros: Okay so here's my take, I think for the price and features it's a no brainer, I used the auto set up at first, just to see how close it would get to the sound level settings I liked, it was Low, so I went back in the settings and manually set everything thing up and Wow did it come alive. I'm using all channels and I purchased 2 polk audio tens for subs, works like a charm. I did back surround instead of front presents, and I went on Vudu and downloaded Dolby atmos as a sound check, and it's crisp and clean sounding. I am using ethernet cable and it connected to my home network with no problems and Internet radio works well. I also use the Harmony 1100i remote for my system. This unit is Very light and Bright, but you can turn it down. Banana plugs go in with ease.

Cons: Okay now for the Cons.. My unit's fan on the back didn't work so I used a laptop fan and placed it on top of the unit and this thing NEVER gets hot. The on screen display looks Very dated as stated by my girlfriend and on line updates don't work directly from the unit, you must download them from a computer, and install via USB... My unit was up to date already. And once in a blue there is a flash on the screen for just a second if the unit is changing the sound processing, this could be due to the cable box, I watch TV through the Avr.

Other Thoughts: My final thoughts, it's a good deal for the crazy Low price I paid and it has plenty of clean power. I don't have the top speakers, so keep that in mind.
2 ten inch subs polk audio, 1 large center channel Fluance, 2 Sony tower 3ways, 2 Sony side surrounds and 2 KLH satalite rear surrounds.

1 out of 5 eggsVery low quality! Disappointing

This review is from: Harman Kardon AVR 1710 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros: Price & Advertised Specs

Cons: The packaging of the unit was not good. Looked liked a used unit.
The remote control unusable by design.
Receiver display interface is very dated.

Other Thoughts: I ordered this unit to update from my current Denon 7.1 to 7.2. I noticed a big difference in quality. My older receiver is much better than the HK receiver. The remote is useless (literally does not work after setup). I completed the setup rather quickly and noticed right away that the sound was subpar. This receiver was put back in the mail within 2 hours. If you have an alternate remote to use other than the HK remote and looking to save money, proceed with this model. If you are looking for quality, I recommend spending a few extra dollars or going with a different model that actually works.

5 out of 5 eggsVery impressed!

This review is from: Harman Kardon AVR 1710 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros: Excellent unit, very lightweight than other A/V receivers i have owned in the past, sound is very bright and clear, I'm using it with my Energy set-up speakers CB-5 x 3, CC-5 and EWS-8 x 2 subwoofers, fit very well in my computer desk hutch upper compartment (must have clear space to the side and top to avoid it overheat), digital power supply (GREEN) love it :)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The receiver set-up is a little tricky for first time users, just get time, relax and be patience when setting it, at the end you will get the sound results you want in this unit :)

5 out of 5 eggsGood product

This review is from: Harman Kardon AVR 1710 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros: I am not sure why people are complaining about this being difficult to set up. If you have never owned a high end amp/receiver then do not downgrade a product for your lack of knowledge. All high end receivers are a bit difficult to figure out if you have never had anything with all the abilities as this. This receiver/amp is as advertised and outstanding. Setup was extremely easy (in fact the easiest high end product I have ever seen) for a high end product. Who ever said it does not have an on screen menu just did not read the instructions or look at the remote as it has a button for it and gives you full control via onscreen guide. Blue tooth took about 10 seconds to set up and I was streaming from my phone to through the amp. Harmon Kardon is known for making better quality high current amps. In stereo equipment Amperage is what you want. Volts are distortion and heat. Amps x volts = watts meaning if you get a cheap 150 watt system that puts out 5 amp per channel at 30 volts and compare that to a 100 watt system that puts out 25 amps at 4 volts the 100 watt system blows away the other one. Too many people do not understand this hope that helps. As far as the comments about sound quality remember that if you get a high end amp and play it through garbage cheap speakers it will never sound correct and in fact cheap speakers sound better with a cheap amp. I have polk audio RTI A9 fronts and matching quality center and full 7.2 surround and this amp sounds amazing with good speakers. Bullets sound like actual bullets when turned up and even the shell casings hitting the ground/ helicopter foot in the matrix helicopter scene sound absolutely authentic. Take it from a MArine who has shot these guns sound real. Don't invest in a high end amp and get garbage speakers or you will not be happy.

Cons: as advertised no back light on the remote like my previous model the AVR630.

Other Thoughts: Pay attention to the frequency response range of your full system if your dvd can play full hd sound and your amp can play full spectrum hd sound but your speakers don't then the sounds will sound worse than on a cheap system matched with your cheap speakers because your speakers can not play what the amp is telling it to. Vise versa as well if you have high end speakers and your amp is garbage then your only going to hear the simulated sounds the amp trys to compensate with because it can't play the full spectrum so your speakers only play what is given. Either get a matching level amp and speakers or don't complain when your systems doesn't sound as good.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING

This review is from: Harman Kardon AVR 1710 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros: Price not a bad price for the heart of a sound system.
HDMI inputs. I don't even need that many, but I am glad I have them for the future. There are enough inputs to run my entire house through this thing.
Sound quality is very nice backed by some JBL speakers.
You can rename Inputs to distinguish really quick what your going to.

Cons: Remote- not a big deal I have a Logitech Harmony anyways so the remote gets thrown in the junk drawer. My harmony actually controls it better that the remote it comes with. I have a button programmed for Night Mode. Thank HK it has a dim feature. The light around the volume knob looks like staring into the chest of Iron Man.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this to any

5 out of 5 eggsHarman Kardon AVR 1710

This review is from: Harman Kardon AVR 1710 7.2-Channel Receiver

Pros: Excellent system at a lower price range. This is my 7th receiver and 4th Harman Kardon receiver. I'm very discerning when it come to audio (been into audio for last 30 years and I'm very techie too :-))
Has DLNA and has Airplay - play directly from your iDevice!

Cons: Kind of expensive at MSRP!

Other Thoughts: I started with a Sony receiver long time ago but dumped it within a month after comparing with a Harman Kardon. Recently I bought 2 very high end Denon receivers but even after keeping them for 2 weeks and adjusting every possible setting, I could not get impressive sound out of either of them - they just sounded muffled. Then bought 1710 not sure how it'll sound because it was a lot cheaper than other units I have bought in the past. The Denons had an MSRP of $1,200 and $900. All my previous HK receivers had an MSRP of over $700. On top of that HK website has conflicting specs on it - at one place it says THD of 0.07% but at another place it say 10% (which is unacceptable).
But once hooked, out of the box, highly impressive sound – clear highs and powerful lows. What a relief – Denons were nowhere as impressive. Proceeded to do EzSet/EQ calibration (highly recommended – a must in my opinion) and even better performance!
Downloaded the apps on my iPhone and wow – I can turn on my receiver from iPhone, control volume and stream from my iPhone to the receiver using BT!
Couple of thing to note, HK did away with a lot of things in this range of receivers that a lot of people didn’t use anyways –
- No 6/8-channel input (mostly used in the past for Super Audio CD) – most of the things are HDMI now.
- No 6/8-channel output – who used it 
- Fewer analog audio and video inputs (most of them were unused anyways).
And lastly, it uses modern swithing power supply - it uses almost no power when off (older units would still consume around 80W) and is more efficient - I was also apprehensive about how powerful will it be - will it be as powerful as my older receivers with traditional power supply - I have to tell you that it is. I could not crank it full (like my previous receivers) without rattling evey window and door and even the walls and floor.
