4 out of 5 eggs8 month update

Pros: It's still beautiful! Still sounds great. Still featureful. In fact, I've discovered new power saving features, one of which allows you to set the illuminated ring on the volume knob to go off automatically while idle.

AnywhereNet+ is LOVELY with my TV. I have a Samsung TV which I use to stream music. When I connect to the share and select MUSIC, the TV turns this receiver on using AnywhereNet+ and I'm able to control the volume with the TV remote.

Cons: USB drives are not recognized as sources. Powered or thumb drives; makes no difference. This is an unfortunate design choice but the receiver's a bit old by now, I think.

There are so many features it's a feature jungle in that receiver and navigating/administering them all using the remote or direct interface can be daunting.

The remote, while minimalistic and beautiful sacrifices a little in the way of usability, I think. The on-screen menu is awesome but you have to use your TV to see it. If you're just using the receiver for music you'll be referencing the user's manual. :D

Other Thoughts: Eight months in I have experienced no audio dropout, no overheating, no dead displays or exploding cabinets (j/k).

I have a 4 month old I play music for all day through this receiver - I've never heard it go off or drop audio and it's never overheated on me.

None of the complaints I've seen repeated here can I relate to so I thought I'd update my review.

For the money this is awesome. There are more modern receivers available for the money but none of them are as beautiful, in my opinion. Any modern receiver you can find for this money will be a lot less refined and have had a lot less thought put into its design.

I'm still really happy with my purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsA decent reeceiver riddled with issues

Pros: This receiver functionally has everything I would want. A plethora of HDMI inputs, and a wide range of audio encoders.

Cons: Boy, where to begin? The receiver loses audio signal after half a second of no activity, and then takes a couple of seconds for the audio to come back on. So what this means is, if I'm watching TV and a commercial finishes playing, there will be a three second pause before the audio for my program starts back up. But it does it during gaming too, if there's a pause for a save or load screen. This makes immersively watching or playing something almost impossible, because you are reminded of how terrible this receiver is every couple of minutes. Also, the manual for this thing is a joke. It only covers things that a toddler should know, like "The HDMI port is where you plug in an HDMI cable." Thanks, HK. It doesn't cover things like, encoder options, accepted video codecs for network play, or even how to set the remote up with all of your devices.

And then there is the Harman Kardon customer support team. Whoa boy. I called them after all of these issues started arising, and at first they seemed pretty helpful. A man, who was incredibly difficult to understand, told me that they would send me a replacement unit. Cool. But that was the last I heard from him, and it's been almost a month. I have emailed him back several times to no response. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Really, this whole product screams of a rush job. The poorness of the build seeps from every hole of this thing.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this. Don't buy Harmon Kardon. There are several other options available that should work that are similarly priced and featured.

1 out of 5 eggsHarmanKardon has terrible quality

Pros: Looks good. That is about it.

Cons: My first unit I bought the cooling fan on the heatsink did not work, so it would get hot. This unit actually worked though.

The next unit they sent to replace it. The PSU and heatsink cooling fans did not work AGAIN. The actual unit didn't work properly either. I was using digital optical input, no output.

The NEXT UNIT I got from them after replacing the 2nd unit, DID NOT WORK. Same flippin issue.... Both cooling fans did not work, and once again... the digital optical inputs wouldn't work.

I've lost all of my faith in the Harman/Kardon brand.

2 out of 5 eggsThere are better options for the price

Pros: The design, number of inputs seems to be sufficient

Cons: Sound seems to go out sometimes when I pause or fast forward my DVR, no Bluetooth, unimpressive performance, cannot bi-amp speakers, no front inputs

Other Thoughts: I can't believe the original MSRP was $800. I bought this because I had heard that the HDMI ports on the Onkyo receivers were sometimes faulty. I wish I had taken a risk. When the Dolby is on auto mode, the sound goes silent when it switches during commercial breaks. I don't really care about commercials, but its annoying. Also, if I change channels and change it back, sometimes the volume is lower even though I haven't turned the volume down. I have been very unimpressed with this thing

2 out of 5 eggsYay! Awww...

Pros: Pretty. Lots of bells and whistles.

Cons: Huge. Sound issues - sound would stop working momentarily throughout programs. Then, two months after use, everything went green on the main HDMI.

Other Thoughts: On the plus side: Harmon Kardon is replacing the AVR 2650 with an AVR 2700. Hoping to have better luck with that one. Bumped the score from one egg to two based on HK replacing it with a later model.

As a side note, after connecting this to my 3D TV to the AVR 2660, I began to occasionally get a pop-up on my tv asking if I wanted to convert the 2D to 3D. Referred to the manual, and the settings on both the TV, satellite, and receiver were correct. It turned from occasional to regular, and now, even after the unit was disconnected, I am still getting that pop-up. Haven't delved into the TV settings to see if there is something that needs to be reset, but it's a little disconcerting that this began AFTER connecting to the original AVR 2650, and can't help but wonder if the AVR 2650 damaged something on the TV itself.

Pros: As an amp, it's great so far. Great price and nice looks.

Cons: after about 4 weeks, all internal settings scrambled. Spokel with tech assistance (around the world), and it was frustrating. They directed me to do reset. The first time, it cleared things for a day or two, then internal settings both overlapped port assignments and scrambled once again. In addition, even with you get the settings correct and lock them, they still get scrambled..

Other Thoughts: There is a work around-

BYPASS THE HARMONKARDON (hdmi inputs and input to TV hdmi ports)

for everything but the audio optical cable. With my 4k resolution TV, I connected an optical cable from the tv to the HarmonKardon, Then for each component, cable, Bluray, and game computer, I used 3 TV hdmi ports. I used hdmi 1 (on TV) for game computer because it is the 4k port for my NVIDIA 770 , others are 1080p. Also. Also, used an ACTIVE DISPLAY ADAPTER in line with the hdmi cable from video card to hdmi 1 on TV. Nvidia has 24hr tech support, can answer questions quickly, and you're off the phone quickly. Had video cards from 2 other manufacturers, but they would not install drivers about 1080p.

Now, my HK amplifier is more reliable. It can control bass, treble, and I can adjust sound level quite well; but making connections with components- is not reliable. Oh yes, I did dedicated my last hdmi port (4) on the tv for HK corrections. So when it misbehaves, I can used the TV as a monitor for internal re-settings.

I do not believe I have ever written this kind of a review before, but I am not happy with what I have purchased, am beyond the return period, and do not want to sign power of atty to Newegg to deal with HK on a send back warranty thing. There is a reason it was marked down from about 900 dollars to 299 dollars and I feel I got 299 dollars worth.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Sound after 30 minutes!! Beware!!

Pros: Nice sleek design but what's the point if it doesn't work properly.

Cons: After a couple of weeks of operation, unit would go silent and would only work when turn off then turn back on. Thought it was just a fluke so I didn't do any thing about it. However it is now 6 weeks since purchased and unit stops every single day (yes every single day). Absolutely atrocious. Horrible reliability. You can forgot about tech support. It is virtually nonexistent. Beware buyer.

1 out of 5 eggsNow you hear it, now you don't

Pros: It has a nice, clean look and the back is well organized. It also sounded very nice for the 30 minutes or so that it lasted.

Cons: No sound after 30 minutes. HK phone support is terrible. Still no sound after factory reset and re-cabling the whole thing.

Other Thoughts: I spent the whole night (until 4 M) trying to get the receiver to work. I changed out all my HDMI cables (all support HDMI 1.4) and reattached the speaker wires. The next day I called HK. The operator was rude and the level 1 and 2 techs put me on long holds (15 - 30 mins). After an hour and a half, I finally spoke to a "senior level technician" who told me that HDMI specs call for a cable length of no more than 9 feet. It doesn't and my cables worked fine with my old Sony, plus they also worked with this HK AVR 2650, but only for 30 minutes!

2 out of 5 eggsAVR 2650 AV Receiver

Pros: Easy setup and clear on screen selections. Setup was easier than previous high end product. Visually attractive front unit. The Dolby does help to modulate volume coming from typically loud TV commercials. The audio quality subjectively appears better than previous non HK unit to myself and another individual.

Cons: System runs hot with chasis temperature >150 degrees with IR thermometer. Much hotter than my previous non HK unit. The unit is in a well ventilated cabinet. The audio turns off anywhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours. Have to turn AVR off and back on to get it to return. Have contacted customer support at HK.
