5 out of 5 eggsSennheiser 558 Headphones

Pros: The quality of these headphones is absolutely phenomenal. If you are looking for headphones in this price range, these are a great pick. On top of the sound quality, these are the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn. I fell asleep while wearing them on the first night of having them and they didn't bother me at all.

Cons: The only fault I have with these is not with the headphones themselves, but with the audio sources that I use. My PC does not put out enough power to fully utilize these headphones, so I went ahead and purchased an amplifier to allow me to use these to their highest potential.

5 out of 5 eggsGeat headphones

Pros: Quality construction
Great Soundstage
High quality sound reproduction
Highs and mids are excellent
Highly reccomend as an intro audiophile pair of headphones.

Cons: A little tight bellow my ears (big head)

Bass is a little weak although that can be fiddled with a little bit with soundcard.

Cord is VERY long - this may not be an issue for you depending on how you want to use it, I have just zip-tied a few loops to shorten the cable. (Why has Sennheiser not released different length and style cables if they are replaceable?)

Other Thoughts: I have these paired with a SoundBlaster Z soundcard which runs to a Fiio e9 headphone amp (used as amp but also to control sound levels from desktop to speakers or headphones) and works wonderfully. (highly reccomend both items)

5 out of 5 eggsSuperior Sound

Pros: These head phones are hands down the best headphones i have owned. The range of sound and clarity is superb. Super light weight and comfortable, i can wear them all day without any discomfort or headache.

Cons: The only downside the headphones have is a lack of thump. Dont get me wrong, they have bass, and an excellent range of it, but if you want brain rattle, they dont have it.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend these cans to anyone who values sound quality and clarity to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Headphones I've Ever Owned

Pros: These headphones have more than delivered for me! A long time user and lover of Sennheiser products in the pro audio spectrum, their reputation made this purchase a no brainer. Coupled with a great deal from Newegg, it was a great choice. The bass and highs are both crystal clear and whenever a family member or friend tries them on, a big smile comes to their face. Make sure you have the correct source and equipment to take these phones to their potential (lossless audio such as FLAC, sound card, amp if wanted ect...). These headphones have been flawless through many hours of listening so far, and I am looking forward to many more!

Cons: -

Other Thoughts: Wish Sennheiser would release a shorter cable for these phones, the cable detaches at the base of the left phone with a twist and pull mechanism. The cord is 3m (9.8ft) and is a tad too long to take out in public in my opinion, so having maybe a 5-6ft cord to take on the go would be ideal! Not a big enough detail to list as a con, still love the HD 558's to death!

5 out of 5 eggsWhat? I can't hear you

Pros: - Crisp and clear from low to high. Excellent range of frequencies for myself.
- Very comfortable and lightweight.
- Louder than you will ever need.

Cons: - No in line volume control
- Not noise cancelling
- Made me realize I need a new sound card to keep up with my headphones.

Other Thoughts: I'm not an audiophile but I do play games that require excellent sound and these are the best I have had yet! Battlefield has never sounded better, the sound is much more complex than I realized with any past headphones. I would buy them again!

4 out of 5 eggsLow (no) power rating

Pros: Sennheiser sound

Cons: Easy to rupture the transducers. Sennheiser provides no power rating for their HD555 to HD598 headphones, including the HD558. See their own product data sheets. My guesstimate is that the 558s can't handle more that 500mw .... because I blew a pair out at about that power. It's much hard to achieve fidelity at high SPL... and these don't.

5 out of 5 eggsWoah..watch The Empire Strikes Back with these

Pros: Replacing my last pair of Razer Carachias, and I must say that these are so so much better. They are far more comfortable during gameplay, the mids and lows are amazing and even the highs are still super crisp, there is a little tiny bit of sound spill from the cups but really it's not that bad.

Cons: A little expensive but when compared to a pair of Beats or the Logitech G35's, these really are a more sensible option the sound and price are way better on these.

Maybe would have liked a Mic, but without a mic they are far more versatile.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic.

Pros: Good sound stage - when you compare these to HD 555s, the 558s sound much more 'open' in a sense. Sennheiser also updated the drivers on these significantly, and they are unarguably better than the 555s.

These are also fantastic for "all around" sound; they are pretty neutral and are good for music, movies and games (With clean bass, sound placement is pretty good especially paired with something like Dolby Headphone.)

Comfortable, they are extremely lightweight and you cannot feel them.

1/4'' native connector, works great with receivers or sound cards that have 1/4'' connectors.

Nice build quality, if you take care of them; they will take care of your ears.

Sound is exceptional - Clean bass, good highs, mids, and lows.

If you're pretty handy, you can open these up and take out the foam pad inbetween the ear and driver, making them sound a little closer to their big brother, the HD 598s. (There are youtube guides to do this with 555s, very similar to 558s.)

Cons: This isn't a con - rather a notice for others. These headphones are "open", which basically means sound can leak in and out. If you're going to be using headphones in a public, or other places which won't be fairly quiet (enough to leak in the headphone and annoy you), you will probably want to invest in a pair of "Closed" headphones..The sound is going to be a little worse but nobody will hear what you are listening to and you won't hear them. (up to a degree, unless they are literally yelling in your year.)

Another 'notice', and not a con - These are good all around, but they aren't really suited for genres that have a considerable amount of bass. (You can use the EQ, but it will drown make the mids and highs fairly worse - drowning them out.)

Other Thoughts: It's notable that you need fairly good equipment to take these to their potential. Things like a sound card, or receiver. (You can add an amp if you wish - they do increase the quality but not by much.)
You're also going to need good source - after awhile of getting suited with these and having good equipment your MP3 won't sound as good as lossless codecs, like FLAC, M4A, and WMA Lossless. (There are more, but these are the most popular ones.

Didn't buy these from Newegg, rather another site, but decided to review them here to help others aswell.

Bottom line, I'd recommend these to a friend - but don't forget that there are tons of other great headphones out there, just look around for reviews and pick what is best for you!

5 out of 5 eggsBest I've Ever Owned.

Pros: Perfect Highs, mids, and lows. So comfortable I barely realize I'm wearing them after a while. Cord is nice and long so I am not limited to sitting right by my reciever. I love the open ear design, it makes it feel like the sound really is flowing. These headphones are the best headphones I have ever owned, they will be if you buy them also. No disappointments whatsoever.

Cons: They weren't free.

Other Thoughts: If these are in your price range get them NOW!
