My new Smart TV doesn't have Skype.  If I buy this camera will I then be able to get the Skype app?

My tv had Skype application before I purchased this camera.  You should be able to download the application without the camera.  The camera enables other people to see you.  Without the camera you should be able to connect to others and see and hear them.  But they will not be able to see and hear you.

Is there a problem with a generic web cam?

Generic web cams will not work with a Samsung Smart tv. I tried using one and it was not recognized by the television. Unfortunately, the only recourse I found was to purchase the Samsung camera. Of course, it works perfectly.

I bought this TV camera for my Samsung smart TV, Model UHDTV 85550, which it does not accept any other TV camera models or manufactures.

The TV camera works great for me. At the beginning I had some issues with it while I was on Skype, but Samsung customer service resolved the issues for me quickly. The issues included:

picture was zooming in and out randomly.
on certain calls people could not hear me very well.

Now I do not have any problem with the unit and it works great. I especially enjoy its auto zooming feature as you move around the room.

I would call Samsung. It is the only way to be sure. I used the online compatibility tool and it gave me incorrect information. I cannot use this camera with my UN60ES7100F.

I have been using a Samsung VG-STC3000 camera with my Samsung Series 6 6300 TV for about 4 months and all of a sudden the camera no longer is working.  When I run a Skype sound/video test, it tells me the camera is not connected.  I guess I am going to have to buy a new camera.  Is the Samsung VG-STC4000/ZA SKYPE CAMERA compatible with my 6300 TV?

I had tried resetting the TV itself to no avail so I ordered a new 4000-series camera, plugged it in and it worked perfectly.  We also have now plugged the camera into a surge-suppressor power strip in an effort to better protect it from power problems.  For the time being the problem is solved.

The old 3000-series camera would never turn on the little blue light on the front of the camera once it stopped working.  Don't know if these cameras have any statistical history of failures but it would be interesting to know.

Does not work with TV I have. I even checked with Samsung who said it would.
Don't expect Samsung to help out either.....terrible customer support.

According to Samsung, the VG-STC4000 is compatible with select F and H series Samsung Smart TVs whereas the older VG-STC3000/ZA is compatible with select D, E/ES, and F series Samsung Smart TVs. Unfortunately, even though you have an E series, your model does not appear in the compatibility lists for either camera. The closest model that does appear is the UN32EH5500 but that does appear to have a different processor and listed for the older 3000 camera model. That is not the final word on this, there is still a chance that either model could work provided you have the Skype App installed on your system ( I do not think your TV will support get gesture control.) I would suggest going the the Samsung website, go to the "Owners" tab and select contact support. You can email or chat with Samsung. I used the live chat option on this very camera and they were able to get an answer  in a few minutes.  Newegg had the best price, no tax and free shipping.  I got it in a couple of days, hard to beat that.
