Yes it is. The SATELLITE series uses a normal 2.5 hard drive.
However if your looking for speed I would look into a solid state drive, otherwise this will work just fine.

will this work with the PS4, it needs to be 9.5 mm thick?

The dimensions for a laptop HDD in order to upgrade a HDD or to install an SSD in a PS3 or PS4 the drive MUST be a  laptop HDD / SSD.   These drives measure 2.5" with a height of 9.5 mm or SMALLER.  DO NOT GET A 15mm drive THEY ARE TOO TALL TO FIT INTO THE CONSOLE'S HDD BAY.

Also a PS3 runs on SATA I (3.0gbs) & a PS4 runs on SATA II (6.0gbs) but BOTH consoles require the drive to be 5400 RPMs in order to be stable & not overheat or run into a power draw issue, (WHICH WILL FRY YOUR CONSOLE)

Currently 1TB is the largest laptop HDD you can install in a PS3 / PS4 until the new Seagate / Samsung Spinpoint M9T's (which boast to be a stable 2TB or larger) are available to the public & not just for new laptop manufacturers.   It will likely be much later this year before that happens though.

What's the actual throughput of this drive in MB/s for both reading, and writing? I can't find a benchmark anywhere.

Will this drive work in a MAC BOOK PRO 17in model A1225?

It should be OK, but due to the proprietary way Apple does everything, I would purchase only from their published list of approved drives, which you should be able to find on their website.

Is this backwards compatible to sata port 1?

Yes, the only difference is the speed @ 1.5gb/second so load time, read/write to hard drive slower than with sata ii (3 GB/sec) or data Iii (,6 GB/sec).
