Dual Cooling System for Long-Term Reliability

The LaCie 4big Quadra's advanced dual cooling system ensures long-term reliability by preventing overheating. The system consists of three key components: an innovative heat-dissipating aluminum casing, a Noctua cooling fan, and jumbo heat exhausts. For the enclosure, its solid-aluminum heat sink design diverts and dissipates heat more efficiently than plastic casings. Its ultra-quiet Noctua NF-P12 fan pulls heat away from the internal components while producing exceptionally little noise. It also controls its speed according to temperature, which means that it works more efficiently while prolonging its lifespan. The LaCie 4big Quadra also has oversized air holes to facilitate airflow from the fan and reduce noise. All together, this ultra-quiet cooling system makes the LaCie 4big Quadra perfect for even the most noise-sensitive creative environments.

Perfect for Professional Environments

LaCie 4big Quadra USB 3.0

Designed for Convenience

The LaCie 4big Quadra was painstakingly designed to integrate seamlessly into professional environments. With its small footprint and space-saving design, you can stand it alone or stack multiple LaCie 4bigs. Busy professionals can also set up email alerts, so they can monitor their device before potential problems escalate.

For example, they'll know if the product's temperature is abnormally high. Even changing the RAID mode is convenient thanks to two-step easy RAID configuration. It also features an Eco mode that puts the hard disks to sleep after a period of inactivity. This prevents overheating and controls power usage. Whatever the professional environment, the LaCie 4big Quadra delivers convenience and piece of mind.

Support When You Need It

Your LaCie 4big Quadra is protected by a three-year limited warranty. It includes comprehensive, complimentary web-based resources, expert in-house technical support, and worldwide repair/replacement coverage. Warranty extensions and Advance Care Option can also be purchased.

*Maximum interface transfer rate = theoretical bus bandwidth, whereas burst transfer rate = maximum drive speed. Tests conducted in RAID0 with 3TB hard disks. Speeds depend on the RAID mode selected, and average transfer rates vary from one computer to another and from one drive to another.
**Adapter cable required. File speeds limited to FireWire 400 speeds.

1TB (Terabyte) = 1000GB. 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less).

1 out of 5 eggsWorst big-ticket purchase I've ever made

Pros: Data storage itself is pretty reliable. Reasonably fast. Has both USB 3.0 and 2 Firewire 800 ports.

Cons: • unexpectedly eject over USB 3.0 on a Mac when the drives spin down
• never go to sleep when connected via Firewire 800
• have remarkably poor build quality (the fan rattles sometimes until you bump it)
• take over 30 seconds to spin up from sleep mode
• completely ignore the Mac's energy saver preference to never spin down on Mac OS X 10.9 or higher

Other Thoughts: After wrestling with LaCie's tech support for over 6 months (and having me send the drive in for testing, only to not do any of the things that make it unmount), they finally sent me a new unit. I called them back when it exhibited the same problems on two different machines, and the tech just blamed Apple. No, it is not Apple -- I've had 50+ drives hooked up to the same machines, and none of them did this. I've spent more time and energy wrestling with this exceedingly poorly designed piece of garbage than any other piece of equipment I've ever owned. It's the worst big-ticket gear purchase I've ever made. I've replaced it with an OWC ThunderRaid 4, which I highly recommend -- it has none of these problems, is much cheaper, and way faster. Nobody seems to even want this piece of garbage on the used market, so I'm ripping out the drives and putting it in a NAS enclosure. If I'm going to be out $1400, at least I can get SOMETHING useful out of it. In the mean time, if anyone wants to start some class action proceedings going, I'm SO in.
I bought this on a friend's recommendation, despite knowing LaCie's poor reputation. I got what I deserved. And I'm never listening to that friend ever again.

5 out of 5 eggsGood purchase.

Pros: It works as advertised. (not all the common these days)
Attached to W7 on USB3 with hdtach I get 182MB/s avg read.
Raid configuration is easy
Price isn't outrageous when you consider the cost of 4 - 4TB drives.

Cons: Sleeps and wakes up randomly sometimes. I suspect this is a W7 issue and not the device.
Takes a little longer than I would like to wake up, but faster than my WD raid usb drive. Not a drive issue, just physics, spin up the drives and verify raid. I doubt it could be any faster with mechanical drives.

Other Thoughts: I have had this about 3 weeks now and am happy with this purchase. More money than I wanted to spend, but given the alternatives to backing up the 7TB I currently have, I am very happy.
I backup all my pc images to it and rsync to an smb mount all of my media from a Linux NAS. Even though the NAS is a Raid-z with HS, one wrong command and its all gone. When will we get TB optical media.
I haven't looked at the brand drives they are using, but hopefully they will stand the test of time.
