4 out of 5 eggsWorked great right out of the box

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: light weight, attractive, easy to install and high performance

Cons: Very delicate sata and power connectors. As long the other SSD's, you need to be very careful connecting/disconnecting the SATA connectors as if you bend them too much the connectors will break off. Luckily this did not happen.

Other Thoughts: I've only had this for three weeks now and it is working great. I understand there is a high failure rate with the low cost SSD's. That seems to be the biggest gripe. I decided to purchase this because the price seemed reasonable. So far it has been working great. My computer boots from off to fully booted in Windows 8.1 in approximately 10 -12 seconds.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Greatly increased the performance of my desktop coming from 3x RAID 0 VelociRaptors.
Works perfectly with no issues at all.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: It's hard to compare SSD's without going into benchmarks and stress testing. But I have used other brands of SSD's that would simply stop working or have other issues.

This one I have been using for months with no issues whatsoever. All other Samsung EVO SSD's I have used have had similar success.

4 out of 5 eggsProgram drive in Laptop

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Improved battery life
-Programs like Adobe after effects, Photoshop, and Premier Pro open in seconds even when they haven't been opened in months.
-Boots in seconds even from hibernate mode.

Cons: -Required Maintenance. (see other thoughts)
-Trouble installing: Used included Magician software to transfer Windows from previous hard drive but software did a poor transfer and windows would crash very easily. After several tries without a clean install I bought a flash-drive and made it into an emergency backup with Toshiba's program on my old drive then used my laptop's backup repair function to repair Samsung's buggy transferred Windows

Other Thoughts: -Noticed the slow read speeds on older data but by the time I noticed it was only a few weeks until Samsung released the patch which was fairly easy to download and install.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked good and then crashed... dead.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This drive worked great as my Windows 8.1 x64 OS drive. I didn't really notice any slowdown as people have described occurring over time. Though I never really tested it. It always booted up super-fast, within seconds. Tho that's also a feature of my motherboard.

Unfortunately after about 15 months of usage Windows just froze. My mouse and cursor still worked but all application windows were stuck. After 30 minutes, no change. I did a hard reboot and got the "MBR Error 1" and the drive was never recognized by my BIOS again.

Tried swapping into different computers just to detect/test it, nothing.

Cons: I may have just received a bad one as most people are having good luck with this drive (at least according to reviews). Samsung is sending a replacement as I'm still well inside of the three-year warranty period.

I keep all personal files off my OS drive, but I did lose some files I had on my desktop unfortunately.

Other Thoughts: Just thought I'd share.

3 out of 5 eggsBetter since update

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Really Fast...at first. great software for cloning existing drive means you don't have to skip a beat to upgrade your system

Cons: Suffered from initial speed degradation from files not being used, experienced this on my HTPC

Other Thoughts: the only flaw was fixed with a firware update, but still something to take into consideration

5 out of 5 eggsSSD's - The breath of life

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Good price point for size.
Seamless install.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Replace your OS HD with and SSD and you give it another couple of years of life. It's like a processor upgrade but wayyyy easier. You'll need cloning software, but you should have it and run recovery images all the time anyway.

1 out of 5 eggsRead Speed Slowdowns

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast when new.

Cons: There is a flaw in the TLC nand flash memory on these drives that causes the read speeds of old data to degrade to HDD levels after 8-12 weeks. People don't realize it because when you run a normal benchmark, most benchmarking programs create a fresh set of files to test against. So everything looks hunky dory. Problem is, your Windows or other OS files are written once when you install it, and as that old data ages the flash memory cell voltage drifts. The onboard controller cannot read the older data accurately and it causes it to slow way down. Do a search for a program that can read and benchmark older data, or all of the data on the drive and you will see what I mean. The manufacturer did a firmware update in October to correct this but it didn't work for a LOT of people. They are promising another update soon but people suspect it will be a bandaid to a flawed hardware design. I have two of these 250s and several other sizes with the problem. This manufacturer is trying to sweep this under the rug. The TLC memory in these drives is the problem. I would not recommend these.

Other Thoughts: Don't plan on using these in any kind of RAID either. Their magician software does not recognize drives in RAID so you're out of luck when trying the firmware updates that these drives will constantly need. You have to break and rebuild arrays to constantly refresh old data. Their is a petition to have these drives recalled.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy install. Quick boots.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 1x nm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 3-Bit MLC NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Plugged it in and it booted right up. Had some trouble installing OSes, but that's because I botched the partitioning rather than anything with the hardware.

I haven't timed it, but I'll bet Windows 7 boots up in < 15 seconds.

Cons: None so far.
