1 out of 5 eggsReliability Issues Are Real

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Storage space, price, designed for NAS operations

Cons: High failure rate. I was hoping that the bad reviews were just competition trying to move you off of WD's products so with some caution I purchased 2 drives to upgrade my Synology DS412+. Degraded the array and installed the 1st drive and began the rebuild process. 5 minutes into the initialization of the drive the Synology lost communications with the drive. Pulled the drive and tried it in a desktop to see if I could talk to the drive with no success. When the drive is powered up you can hear a faint rubbing sound as though one of the heads is making contact with a platter. 5 stars to NewEgg for the ease of RMA process, but here I am with a NAS that I have no confidence in. Does WD not understand the importance of reliability in their products? I thought this issue was solved years ago, My 2TB Reds have been running with no issues, but these 4TB drives now have me thinking I will have to worry that my data is no longer safe from corruption.

Other Thoughts: Come on WD do the right thing and pull the defective drives off the market until you get it right. Taking chances with peoples data is just wrong. You know you have an issue with these drives, be responsible and fix it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive For NAS

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Great Price for the space provided at the 220 dollars I spent that is about 50 cents a gigabyte.

Extremely quiet and cool running.

Decent throughput for what I am using it for

Cons: None that I can think of

Other Thoughts: I'm using this as NAS disk for my VMWare servers. I'm running ESXi 6.0 and I have all of my virtual servers running from this disk. The main goal was to pack a lot of space into my virtual streaming server for watching movies on any TV in the house. This has done that very well. The VMWare server sits in a closet and generates very little heat and noise. I would like to pick up at least 3 more of these and put them together in a RAID 5 configuration but for that I will need a new motherboard first.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS install, no hiccups

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: not quite a year but 50 weeks and still counting. no issues, no errors. 24/7. SMART reports clean and stable condition. They've been reading and writing almost continuously as streaming storage and backup targets.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes production runs have excessive failures and bad things happen but WD has never let me down. In 20 years of personal I can't remember even complete hard down. Seagates on the other hand have given up on quality in the last decade, 3+ bad in 10 drives, mostly USB externals. However WD externals always work so I blame the Seagate HDD.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat reliable drives for server

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: The drives worked great with my home NAS. Bought 4 initially, then got 2 more to expand. All have arrived in great condition (shipped in a air cushioned pouch of protection). All drives operated as advertised and no DOAs. Well worth the $145/ea. sale price.

Cons: None I have experienced so far.

Other Thoughts: As said in other reviews, these are for Network Attached Storage systems, not your regular PC. They have lower overall speeds than the Blue and Black ED drives. The Red drives are optimized for endurance and reliability over long periods of time.

It has a 3 year manufacturer warranty.

3 out of 5 eggsMixed success

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Power consumption
Low noise
4TB

Cons: Reliability

Other Thoughts: I have been running six Samsung 2TB Spinpoints for five years, and had one drive fail a few months ago. I miss that level of reliability.
Seagate bought them out -- someone wake me up when it's worth buying their drives again, my experience with Seagate is that their drives all last <1yr.

From a reliability perspective, HGST is supposed to be king, and if the Reds turn out to be horribly unreliable over the long-term, I may bite the bullet, but the HGST NAS drives are not cool, quiet drives. The layout of my room has my NAS less than a meter away, and I'm planning to go to an 8-bay model for video editing. The HGST drives would give me slightly higher throughput, but that would be mainly lost in a 10gbe setup. The extra noise is not worth the tradeoff/headache.

Nothing beats those wonderful 1TB Spinpoints when it comes to noise (aside from really expensive SSDs :>), but the Reds aren't too far back -- and the Reds have the spinpoints beat on startup noise for sure!

The real problem with the Reds, as you've no doubt noticed from the reviews, is their reliability. I have thus far ordered seven of them. Two of them I've had on alternate backup duty for something like a year now, while five new ones have been here about a week. I ran the five through HDDScan, and one of them died straight off (spins up, but doesn't latch on). Another of them died during a read scan on 31 sectors. A reboot, a pass through WD's diagnostics tools, and several scan tests later and all seems fine. I plan to mark the drive to see if this was a warning or a transient. I figure I'm running at about a 20% failure rate, which is really two orders of magnitude higher than ought to be accepted.

Aside from reliability, I'm interested in how the drives will work in a NAS. They're supposed to be happy in that environment, but what I'm seeing is very high variability in read speeds. Some drives read really fast. The drive that died was getting over 170kps, most of the drives get around 164kps at the outer rim. My questionable drive is making more like 155kps. In a NAS enclosure, I expect to run at the slowest drive's rate, and I wonder if I should pick and choose to get a good matched set. The variability is quite surprising to me.

3 out of 5 eggspoor packaging

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: 4TB

Cons: Lousy packaging by NewEgg, they were shipped in a box with very little padding around the drives and each drive was in the OEM bubble pack but the one end is essentially open and 2 of the 4 drives were partially out of the bubble pack. The bubble pack does not protect the outside edges of the drive so with the lack of padding around the drives they were free to move around inside the box. The top of the box flaps were taped but did not line up so even the taping job was sub par. I'm testing them now but doubt they will all pass...time will tell.

I will update this review after testing is final.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems Here...

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Reliable, Quiet, and Fast...what more could one expect from a NAS HDD?

Cons: Nothing so far in over a year....

Other Thoughts: I have been using this exact model drive in my QNAP TS Pro series 2 bay NAS housing a total of 3 TB of movies that serve PLEX on 2 HDTV's in my house, 1 at my parent's house remotely, and my laptop on the road. I have had no issues to date. I constantly write large files (over 50GB each time) to the drive almost daily. Media is served daily through PLEX (only form of TV for me now), no noises from drives, no latency, and certainly no failures. I do not understand how so many on this site can complain about this product unless perhaps NewEgg.com had a "bad" batch of drives in their shipping warehouse, or the people on here complaining simply ordered them from another site altogether, either way....WD has always been my first choice for HDD's and Toshiba my very last with Seagate towards the latter.

2 out of 5 eggsBought 4 - 1 failed on first day

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Big

Cons: Failure rate is not acceptable. Loaded in a RAID 10 and one of four disks immediate showed a failure

Other Thoughts: Not sure if this Red line is all that it is cracked up to be.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Donald, it is unfortunate that you have experienced a drive failure. Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses, and for this reason it is unfortunate that you have received a dead on arrival drive. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives and great Newegg support

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: These are great drives for NAS/RAID (not super high performance, but generally reliable). I ordered several, and had one DOA, which Newegg replaced promptly.

Cons: Expensive when not on sale.
