5 out of 5 eggsFinally works after a week of trying

Pros: Very small and light weight. Newegg shipped these in a box, inside the box were 2 more smaller boxes. Each drive was in it's own box and each drive was in a heavy duty bubble pack pouch. I was also able to install these in an old Acer laptop using a SATA to IDE adapter. Ok they were hanging out by a 1/4 inch but both work. This old laptop didn't have any problems even though the drives were formatted to 180 GB partitions.

Cons: I have an Acer netbook A0531h. The hard drive died. I tested it and it has a bunch of bad sectors. It doesn't do me any good to have the Acer drive recovery files on then hard drive. When you need them the drive is dead. I bought 2 WD Blue WD5000LPVX 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drives. I can not get Windows XP to install on these drive in the netbook. I made a bootable Windows XP disc. I integrated SP 3, (AHCI driver and the intel chipset drivers from the Acer website for this model netbook) into a CD. If I set the netbook bios to AHCI the netbook won't even boot on the CD. If the bios is set to IDE it will boot to the CD and the Windows XP 32bit will install to the point of the first restart. It stops here, "boot from CD press any key" or it goes to a disc read error. I boot of a USB drive to win mini and access files on the hard drive. I tried this with both of the new 2.5" hard drives. If I put the nes hard drives in an old laptop using an SATA to IDE adapter Windows XP will install on the old laptop. If I transfer these hard drives to the netbook it will not boot and only get a disc read error message. I have worked on this for days.

Other Thoughts: First, I disabled the quick start-up feature in the bios. This allowed the installation to go on while the bios was set to AHCI instead of IDE. Still the installation of Windows XP would stop after the first re-start.
Second, I fixed this by decreasing the partition size from 180 GB to 128 GB. After this the installation went smoothly. I also used a new HP laptop with windows 8.1 on it and and an USB dock to format these drives with the correct alignment. I checked this later with WDalign and it showed they were correctly aligned.

2 out of 5 eggsDisliked and noisy

Pros: Western Digital reliability, ease to install, also a good warranty. Relatively quick acces time for this kind of HDD.

Cons: Slow overall performance even quick access time, my last Momentus thin was an older version and was quicker with an average of 20mb/sec more. Only 8mb of cache and it's obvious when working hard a bit. Seems to be one of the two platers and electronic board from older 1tb scorpio... Felt exactly like that.

We hear a clicking sound each 5 seconds which made me agressive when trying to work with the laptop.

It's also noisy as hell in a laptop and we feel it spin and vibrate a bit the laptop, something I never felt before with last hdd. I don't know what WD hard drives have these day but this one like another kind from WD i bought recently was also noisy, very noisy. I was so much happy that I put back the Seagate. This one will be in a case for backup hidden somehwere I will use it the less I could.

Other Thoughts: I will think seriously what would be the future brand next time I'll buy another hard disk drive.

2 out of 5 eggsDead after 5 months

Pros: It ran my Winamp without stopping to respin the drive once. And for once the drive stayed cool.

Cons: It died 5 months after I installed it. And the temperature sensor didn't work.

Other Thoughts: Follow-up review.
On January 12th this year, I restarted my Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop with this drive in it, but when it got to the Windows 8 start menu screen, it completely froze. When I had to hard-reset my laptop, I got this cheerful error message on the boot screen:
Internal hard disk drive not found. To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive.
No bootable devices--strike the F1 key to retry boot, F2 to enter Setup menu, F5 to enter PSA
This laptop hasn't been bumped too violently to knock anything loose or damage the drive in any way, and yet this occurs. Entering the Pre-Boot System Assessment procures the "no hard disk detected" message as well. So basically I've been told my hard disk had crashed. I couldn't return it because it's been past 30 days, but I couldn't file an RMA claim with WD, either.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsReplacement Works

Pros: This was a replacement for a dead drive on a previous order. This one works. I would suggest setting it up with Acronis from the WD site. Great service from Newegg with the RMA.

Cons: None so far.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 can't find it.

Pros: Might be some if windows could find it.

Cons: Windows 8 can't detect the drive. It initially makes a grinding noise then powers down. Seems to be very warm

Other Thoughts: If it would detect it I might be able to figure out what is wrong. But it does nothing. RMA time and try another.
