1 out of 5 eggsbulk bare buyer b u know the rhyme

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: no delay in arrival after order. no delay in throwing read write errors. no delay in immediately requesting and receiving refund. no delay in ordering a nonbulk nonbare upgrade.

Cons: patiently waiting retail boxen 4tb. missing the long lost option to buy a Conner hdd. wishing factory QA wasn't an apology but a check for write errors.

Other Thoughts: formatted ok. sunny seasidetools said smart test ok. but wasn't ok. failed simple read write soak testing. u should use actual diagnostic tools on hdd during the perishable full refund window. this experience honed and refocused both my price value point and brand decision processes.

5 out of 5 eggsPurchased 3 of these drives, all functioning well

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - High Capacity
- Best value per GB currently

I purchased 3 of these drives for my WHS 2011 storage server running FlexRAID. I used two for parity drives and the third for data. In total, I have 16 drives in the RAID, 2 of which are for parity, with a total of 42 TB of storage capacity.

All three drives passed a surface sector scan without error and were placed into the RAID array. The parity drives see about 2 TB/day in reads and 1 TB/day in writes. I've written about 1 TB to the 3rd drive. I have not had any issues with any of these drives.

Performance is excellent for a 5900 RPM drive. The error scan averaged approximately 170 MB/sec, whereas the 3 TB 7200 RPM drive hit 186 MB/sec. In contrast, this drive runs cooler and has less vibration.

I also wanted to comment on Newegg's new hard drive shipping methods. I stopped buying drives from Newegg a year ago when I received two DOA drives, both poorly packaged. However, Newegg revamped their shipping practices and all drives are now shipped in custom-fitted air bladders that provide excellent protection. I can now happily purchase drives from Newegg, knowing that they will be properly packaged. See here for more information: http://promotions.newegg.com/HDD/14-0788/index.html?icid=238512

I will update this review in a year with the current state of all 3 drives.

Cons: - These drives only come with a 2 year warranty, extended to 3 years if you purchase with a credit card (Visa, MC, AMEX, Discover all offer this benefit). In contrast, the NAS drives come with a 3 year warranty and enterprise/WD Black drives have 5 year warranties. These drives are still an excellent value, but the limited warranty period is something to consider. I don't think the price premium on NAS drives is warranted unless you are using drives for traditional RAID.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I really like the value for this

Cons: It doesn't work half the time, the computer stops recognizing it when I try to write to it.

5 out of 5 eggsStill working

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Been running for 5 months without any issues.

Cons: I cant find any cons

Other Thoughts: Mine works, I supposed I got lucky and got a working one, seems like these seagate hard drives are a real mess. To be honest all the hard drives I bought from newegg are still working, including those 3TB that are atrociously bad, its a luck and packaging.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of Storage. Very fast for a lower RPM drive

Cons: Just quit working after about a year. No indications that it was bad, just stopped working. Doesn't spin up. Took about 3.7 GB of data with it. Hope my other 2 drives don't just quit working.

Better back up your data or use Raid 5

Other Thoughts: Drive seems like it has a high fail rate. Too bad, because it was great while it worked.

2 out of 5 eggsLot of space... but for how long?

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Storage of 4TB is plenty of space for a lot of games, and music.

Cons: I raided 2 of these 4TB drives together and within 2 months (end of July) one of them failed causing my raid to fall apart. First sign was event log errors, and when I would click on drives in my computer the computer would freeze up.

Other Thoughts: If you decide to go with this brand, just be weary you may end up with faulty hardware.

1 out of 5 eggsthe most godawful drive I've used in the past 10 years

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large storage capacity

Cons: I've had this drive for a few months now, and I should have RMA'd it right off the bat. The day I transferred my media files onto this drive, about 500gb became corrupted and unreadable. Ok, I figured the data was old and could have been corrupt, no big loss. As months go on, I have been losing more and more data to drive corruption, and have no idea what is causing it. I can write to my other two drives (WD Black/Green) just fine, with no data loss. But it seems like every time I write to this Seagate drive, more of my older data becomes corrupt and unreadable. I had a few years worth of anime series, etc on there. So far I've lost over 1.5 TB of data, some of which I cannot replace. I'm honestly furious. I thought things were going ok, but I went back to view a video today that I'd viewed just 1 month previous (on this drive), and found that everything in its folder was no longer readable. Again, furious. I'm wary of writing new data to it because I don't want to lose it, and don't have a spare drive to write all the data to in order to save it.

Other Thoughts: This has been my worst technology purchase in well over 10 years (second only to two MSI motherboards), and I will never, ever, buy a Seagate drive again. The last Seagate drive I'd bought before this started clicking and died within 2 years, but it had been handled roughly and there wasn't much data on it so I didn't consider it a huge loss. I should have known better than to buy another Seagate product after my last experience, even though the reviews were largely postitive on this drive. But I'm sure that this purchase will have been the last. Will be buying WD and other brands from now on. Really disappointed, Seagate. You've lost a customer for life.
