2 out of 5 eggsAll fun and (some) games until you buy an i5

Pros: Great board for budget builds!

Cons: Although it's advertised as being compatible with 4th gen intel CPU's, it was not in my case

Other Thoughts: Wanted to upgrade my CPU to an i5 4690k. Did my research, upgraded bios, put in the new chip, no dice. Now my mobo (which is a revision 1.x board, see review from Matt S warning of rev 1 boards of this model) won't even post with the old chip. Looks like my $250 splurge is going to at least double in the coming days, before I have to call MS and beg them to let me use my OEM version of win7 on the new board.

If you're assembling a budget build with no intention of ever upgrading, this board is a great buy. If you'd like to have the option of upgrading down the road, do not buy this board.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Board

Pros: USB3/USB2, SATA 6 & SATA 3, onboard COM Port socket, easy install. I've used a number of Gigabyte boards in the past and this is a great performer for my needs. The spacing of the PCI slots seem a bit close but workable. A with most boards, you need to be sure of your video card placement which I've found typically cover one of the PCI/PCIe slots making it unusable.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally got sound working !

Pros: This is a follow-up to my previous review. Sound is now fully functional with Debian wheezy (Linux). Now happy with this board.

Cons: Fixing the sound was a real PITA. Such is life with Linux.

Other Thoughts: In case anyone else has a similar problem here's how I fixed it. Needed to to create an .asoundrc file in /home with this configuration:

defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.timer.card 1

4 out of 5 eggsGigabyte GA-B85-HD3

Pros: 1. Features - has all the basics: SATA 6gb, PCI Express 3.0, USB 3.0, UEFI. 2. Well built - feels solid for an inexpensive board.

Cons: 1. NOT full ATX. The RAM slots and ATX power plug are not supported well in a case. Installing either causes a lot of bending. 2. Kind of picky - refused to play nicely with G.Skill Value DDR3 1600 8GB. I have used this RAM in COUNTLESS boards (including 3 Gigabyte boards) with no incident. This board REFUSED to work with it (constant BSODs). The RAM works perfectly in all other boards I tried it in.

Other Thoughts: This is a great budget board. It has a couple minor drawbacks (NO overclocking, NO SLI (does Crossfire X though). It has 4 SATA 6gb ports (NO RAID). I built a budget gaming system with a Core i5 4570, 8GB RAM, Radeon R7 265, Mushkin Chronos 120GB SSD, Rosewill 630w PSU and Seagate 2TB HDD. It was an AMAZING machine for the money.

4 out of 5 eggsALC892 problems on Linux

Pros: Booted to my pre-installed Debian drive already in the case. Display is clear with default drivers. Quiet.

Cons: The RealTek audio ALC892 is not fully functional with alsa. Works on some applications - VLC, SMPlayer, deadbeef. Non-functional on Avidemux, Totem, and anything online. Something's not configured properly somewhere. Have spent many days trying to track this down but no joy yet, Disappointing but not yet critical as this is not my production machine. Hopefully will sort out in time.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Compatible

Pros: This board was good for a basic build and had decent features for the price.

Cons: This board is advertised as being 4th Generation i3, i5, and i7 LGA-1150 compatible. After almost a month of going back and forth with the manufacturer support, it turns out that, depending on the revision, is actually not compatible with 4th Generation processors. I bought a 4th Gen LGA-1150 i5-4590 and it is not compatible with Rev 1.0 boards without a bios update. To update the bios, the manufacturer suggests using an older processor first to update the bios and then to install a 4th Gen processor.

I do not find it acceptable to expect the user to purchase two CPUs to make a product do what is advertised. And not everyone has a spare processor laying around.

Rev 2.0 boards will work with this CPU. it is the Rev 1.0 that are the problem. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing which one you will receive.

Other Thoughts: I will continue to look for a basic board that is actually compatible with 4th Gen CPUs and do not require the user to purchase a second older CPU to update the bios. If it is advertised as 4th Gen CPU compatible, then it should work with a 4th Gen CPU. No exceptions.

The box should read "4th Gen Compatible *with the purchase of an older CPU to first update the bios.*"

5 out of 5 eggsGreat motherboard without a lot of high priced features

Pros: Great inexpensive board. Has the features I wanted (SATA 3, Socket 1150, PCIe3) without a lot of extra expensive features (no RAID or overclocking). Works with Intel i5-4690S CPU out of the box (BIOS version FB) although I did update it to the latest BIOS (FE). I had revision 2.0 of the board.

Worked with my existing RAM (Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1333) and Gigabyte GTX 660 Ti with no issues.

Cons: Doesn't overclock even with a K CPU (not a legit con since I knew it didn't overclock).
Only has 4 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 on back panel (with 4 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 front panel headers)
Only supports Crossfire, not SLI.
Doesn't allow me to manually set the core multiplier even though I have the option in the BIOS. What I mean is that under load, the CPU I used turbo's to 3.5 GHz. Single core turbo is 3.9 GHz. I set the four cores to 3.9 GHz in the BIOS regardless of load but the CPU still "only" turbo's to 3.5 with four core load. This is because I have the Enhanced Intel Speed Step enabled. If I disable that option, I get 3.9 GHz speed regardless of CPU loading. Thus, I can have "auto" turbo control or forced high freq turbo - not both. This is not a real "con" just something I noticed.

Other Thoughts: Great board. Does exactly what I needed it to do - run my i5-4690S CPU at low power draw, high freq 3.5-3.9 GHz and remains stable. No motherboard related crashes.

Note that I am dual booting Windows 7 for my games and Mac OS X for my DAW / Logic Pro X workstation. No problems with Mac OS X install, no stability problems at all.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes what I need it to, after BIOS update

Pros: Cheap, effective.

Cons: My board was Rev 2.0, and came with BIOS version FB. First installing it, I couldn't get it to POST, I thought. Everything seemed fine but no video. Suspecting my monitor, I plugged in my old VGA monitor and got video, and discovered that only VGA worked until the OS was done booting. After upgrading to BIOS version FC, that issue was fixed, and I can now see the BIOS on my DVI monitor. I don't think it should have been necessary to do this, and if I hadn't had a VGA monitor handy, I might have returned the motherboard as defective and ordered a different make. The confusion and frustration that this caused me is why I knocked off two eggs.

Other Thoughts: Now that the BIOS is up to date it is operating exactly as expected. If you get one that you think isn't POSTing, try connecting a VGA monitor.

I got this board because it's exactly like the one that I got for my home server, but in ATX form factor, so in the event that either one should die, bringing it up with otherwise identical hardware should be fairly trouble-free.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Board

Pros: Appears to be a good board but it will not shut itself off!

Cons: It took several resets of the memory cards in their slots to get the system to recognize them all. The system will not shut itself off. Customer service continued to drag things out by suggesting fixes one at a time and taking days to get back with me after each one. This process has taken close to a month and still the board will not properly shut down. Even if the power switch is turned off in BIOS the system will shut down and then restart. I've had to spend way too much time changing BIOS settings, reinstalling operating systems, removing components, swapping hard drives, swapping power supplies, flashing BIOS, and even removing the CPU to look for bent pins. This has taken over a month with still no resolution to the problem!
