5 out of 5 eggsMSI has a terrible rebate program

Pros: This motherboard works great. The bios let you use a USB mouse which is pretty cool. Started right up out of the box first try. No complaints about the hardware.

Cons: Here is the reason why I will probably go back to EVGA exclusively after this board. MSI's rebate program is a joke. I followed the extremely convoluted rebate instructions as closely as possible and on time. I mailed it to their rebate center in California with a copy of the order invoice, a signed form I had to print out, and the UPC from the box all after I had to initiate the stupid process online. After all the trouble they returned it to me and said I mailed it to the wrong MSI rebate center and to send it to the one in Texas. I did that as soon as they returned it to me and I have yet to hear anything back from them. I'm assuming because by the time they returned it to me the 30 day rebate period had passed. I don't like being jerked around after going through so much trouble for a $20 rebate and probably won't do business with MSI again because I feel like they could help me but choose not to.

Other Thoughts: I am about to buy a GTX 770 to complete my build and will be purchasing it from anyone but MSI now.

2 out of 5 eggspoor quality control

Pros: none so far

Cons: Dead memory channel, looks like bent pins in the CPU socket are to blame but they are nearly impossible to bend back in place. Can only run memory in single channel mode. I have to RMA the board to MSI which looks like a 4 week turn around time.

Other Thoughts: Should have bought an ASUS for the same price

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
Bent pins is an user-induced damage, see below for the proper installation procedures (shown in the user's manual as well).

Proper CPU installation procedures:
1. Open metal cage first by releasing lever without removing the plastic cover (Warning! Do not remove the plastic cap yet).
2. Insert processor into the socket.
3. Close the metal cage and secure the lever, plastic cover will come off automatically.

In order to replace this motherboard, we will charge you a $45 to process a replacement.
Please feel free to get in touch with us to proceed with this OOW RMA request by calling our tech support team directly at 626.271.1004 for assistance during regular business hours from M to F, 9am to 6pm Pacific Time, or you can email us at usreview@msi.com, thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsWow!

Pros: Fast! I have a Samsung 840 Pro that used to be attached to a Core 2 Duo setup from 2008. This board seriously unlocked the potential of the SSD. Plus it instantly overclocked my 3.2 GHz chip to 3.8 Ghz. Not impressive, but stupid proof.

Cons: No cons yet. Hopefully it keeps working. MSI quality has been good for me for the most part in the past but there was that one time...

Other Thoughts: The Thundebolt port is interesting. Too bad this board is sold out!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Motherboard

Pros: Great color scheme, has OC genie, click BIOS, wonderful blue/black color scheme. Relatively easy to overclock with, but doing it from the standard settings will not save the settings for the CPU ratio. Just make a custom OC Genie with the settings you want.

The box was strangely nice. You can definitely judge this motherboard by the box it came in, which is weird to say. xD

Has thunderbolt. I'm not sure what to use it for...

Cons: IO backplate has a weird metal nub covering part of the thunderbolt port. Might just be bad installation on my part, but if I ever figured out what to use the thunderbolt for, I can just cut the nub off.

Other Thoughts: Retail is expensive, at about $150. I got it on sale for $85 ($15 rebate, -$50 sale), which is the only reason I got it at all. I wanted the PCIe 3.0, and 3 of them. It was the cheapest I could find, and got thunderbolt as a bonus.

Unless you actually need thunderbolt, I'd spring for the gaming variant instead. But it was sold out at the time of purchase, and as I recall, very close to the same price.

1 out of 5 eggsMSI Needs better quality control

Pros: At least they have a better return/exchange policy than many manufacturers.

Cons: Aside from below, the SATA ports on the side are difficult to get to, especially with smaller cases. It doesn't take much more space to make them accessible from the top.

Other Thoughts: Bought a defective one with bad pins in the CPU socket. After exchanging it, I get another defective one with the exact same issue. They need to do a better job identifying bad boards before they leave the factory.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome board!

Pros: Easy install and seems well built.
OC II thing is really easy to use and the bios works great.
everything is faster on this board compared to the old H61 i had before.
The side facing usb 3 port is great for keeping airflow good over the board since that cable is so tall if facing up. Same with sata cables to a lesser extent.

Cons: The red and black version was sold out?
Also i got this board on sale for $100 so I have no Idea what to do with the thunderbolt port. (Is it for Iphone 5's?)

No real cons, thing works great, if you dont need thunderbolt then it may be too much at normal price.

Other Thoughts: BRIGHT blue led's on the board at the top. Some people will like them, i just used electric tape to cover them.

3 out of 5 eggsHate the horizontal USB3 connector

Pros: None so far - still in the build process

Cons: Horizontal USB3 port is HARD to access in medium/large size case.

Other Thoughts: I've built about 15 systems from scratch and moved motherboards between cases about 15 more. Never bent a pin till tonight. The USB3 connector is nearly impossible to access in a medium large (Antec One) case once installed. I tried to tease the connector in. Shoulda pulled the board to plug in but you are not supposed to have to.

If you get this board or another with the horizontal plug BE CAREFUL.
This really is a poor design. The connector body on most case USB3 plugs is large and heavy and hanging it "in front" of the board would put it into the drive cage on many smaller cases.

I'll pull the board, straighten the pins and once I get the plug in and board running I'll update this review in a couple days.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It has all the slots / items it was marketed as

the 65 rebate with purchase of a cpu made it a great price for board with features.

Cons: the ram slot is extremely close to the cpu socket. You must use low profile ram to get all 4 sockets work if you have like an 212 evo and use 2 120 mm fans one on each side. The fan is literally above the 1st ram slot.

Also I can no longer use my side fan on the case because the cpu socket is lower on the motherboard then other motherboards I have. It makes the fan come in direct path with the fan on the side of the case.

Also even though it has 3 slots for pcie 3.0... I doubt you can use it unless you have the exact right case with like a top mount psu or an extra full tower. that or modifying heatsinks

I have a full tower and there is no way a 3rd video card could be added unless you are alright with a 1mm clearance of the card to bottom mount psu unit.

it also is very tight to the second card... most video cards using 3.0 pcie are dual slots so this makes it worse.. The spacing between slot 1 and 2 is fine with enough air flow clearance while the space between 2-3 is completely useless unless using single slotted cards. The 2 pci slots between 1 and 2 show good spacing to use 2 cards.. the 1 pci between 2 and 3 really shows how small the space makes using all 3 slots next to impossible
