3 out of 5 eggsUsed for personal server use. Dead x16 socket

Pros: Works great for running small game servers on a G3258. (I know it wont be OC'd here but another board is on the way. Everything worked great day 1 with all my SSD's for game server storage but today I tried to plug in an video card and the motherboard doesn't recognize the card.

Cons: Looked in BIOS and it doesn't recognize the x16 slot at all. The x1 lane is found fine though. Not sure if this was broken from day 1 but very disappointing. Did proper checks on graphics card seating, visual inspect of all connectors for all parts involved, upped the power supply to a 700 watt, tried another graphics card I had lying around, tried all parts in other systems I have on hand.
The 'OS' version of the fan and system temp software is almost non-existent. It loads a window and says 1 thing, what the current temp of the CPU temp is. I suppose if you only have 1 job.....

Other Thoughts: Everything I own works find in other configurations just not on this board. Too bad, would have made a nice budget board for lan events but will just have to stay stuffed away in my rack at home. 1 Egg off for broken x16 lane, and 1 Egg off for too simplistic of features for the BIOS. Could use Raid configs and better fan control management in and out of BIOS.

2 out of 5 eggsDoes not support S3 sleep!

Pros: Cheap, small, functional

Cons: Does not support S3 sleep mode! C'mon, this should be standard!
This means that when you are not using your PC, you either have to shut down, hibernate, or listen to your fans run all the time. There's no silent sleep mode.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry, S3 is not a standard feature for all motherboards. Biostar motherboards that are version 7.x or 8.x do not have S3 feature added, these are price competitive products to compete in a very competitive market. If S3 is a must need feature, Biostar products versions 1.x to 6.x will have S3 function.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely solid board

Pros: I have built 20+ systems with this board, no DOA's or any system failures of any kind. For the price, this board doesn't deserve anything but 5 eggs. Clearly you can spend more if you need extra features. This is ideal for business systems, and screams with an SSD.

Cons: No USB3.0 support

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent for the price

Pros: Great build quality. supports overclocking with new bios update which is great for the pentium G3258 anniversary edition. fits in mini itx cases(if you arent using a dual slot video card). It's also my favorite color. Price can't be beat seeing as it's the cheapest lga 1150 socket board available.

Cons: Limited expandibility. Integrated audio is just 5.1 as opposed to 7.1. Too few usb ports. No internal usb 3.0 header. Lack of pci slot. its single case fan header runs most case fans very loudly making a molex fan header adapter recommended.

Other Thoughts: Lack of expandibility hurts this board more than anything. its lone pcie 1x slot is best used to add an internal USB 3.0 header and some ports to the back as well. This board's best use is definitely in low power specialized applications like being a dedicated Minecraft Server or in an HTPC. where upgradability isn't an issue

2 out of 5 eggsNo S3

Pros: Compact. Lots of settings in BIOS setup.

Cons: This version of the MB does not support the S3 suspend sleep mode. Worthless for a HTPC. RMAed.

Other Thoughts: According to Biostar, all version prior 7 did support the S3 suspend mode, but versions 7 and 8 do not. Why???

Manufacturer Response:

Motherboards is a very competitive market, due to the price driven market of mainstream products, S3 function is not added on this model to reduce price. If you are looking S3 function on Biostar products, models that range from 1.x to 6.x support S3.

2 out of 5 eggsGood MB but Dead PCI-E

Pros: Good Overclocking potential with the old BIOS, can change voltages, etc.,

Has extra PCI-E x1 on micro ITX !!,

Old style BIOS, I am sure my MB is not spying on me.

Cons: Dead PCI-E x16 slot after 2 month.

Not sure whether I can fix it. My assumption is that the circuit regulating power supply for this socket is dead, as I did forget to connect the additional power to my GPU before that happed.

Other Thoughts: Good MB but Dead PCI-E slot after 2 month, the protecting circuits are not doing they job properly.

Unfortunately I did cut a bit the 12v connector to fit my CPU cooler... not sure whether I can return it.

Manufacturer Response:

Based on your situation, 1 please check CPU socket, make sure there is no damaged CPU socket pins 2. If possible please try to CPU or try different CPU to see if the CPU is faulty (CPU also controls the PCI-E lanes). If neither helps, you can contact Biostar support at 626-581-1055 menu 2 or email support@Biostar-usa.com

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your time or money

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Let me start by saying I purchased this mother board for a HTPC, I have a Ceton InfiniTV 6 PCIe card I purchased about six months ago, installed it in my main PC and it was working great, decided to move it to a dedicated PC. I purchased this for the motherboard, and I am extremely dissapointed. I had the Ceton card installed in the PCIex1 slot, and after some time (sometimes days, sometimes hours), the PC would no longer see the card and I would have to reboot. I moved it to the x16 slot, and that problem was fixed. Not that big a deal, since I didn't need the x16 slot anyway. After fixing that, the USB ports now decide to drop out every so often. I have a IR remote plugged in to one of the USB ports, and a Switched Digital Video (SDV) adapter plugged in to the other that certain channels need. If these drop out, I need to hard reset the PC. I can't plug in a keyboard or mouse in this situation, because the USB ports won't recognize them unless I reboot. THIS IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. Tried installing latest drivers, etc., doesn't work. I am going to ditch it and buy something a little more expensive that doesn't give me these kinds of headaches.

Other Thoughts: Learned a valuable lesson with this one: stay away from Biostar Mobo's and stick with ASUS.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of your troubles. This does not sound like normal function of the motherboard. Recommend for you to contact Biostar support for assistance or RMA or warranty service.

5 out of 5 eggsNice. Nice Features.

Pros: It's a board. It worked great. The driver disk was sweet. I put it in and picked Manual, Drivers, Install. It just installed all required drivers with no bloatware. A nice change after ASROCK bloatware disks.

Cons: No USB 3.0 on board. No Esata on the back. No DVI video. But I knew that when I bought it so no eggs off. It's awesome for what it is.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Budget Board

Pros: Despite the low price and small size, this board is capable of many more expensive boards on the market. Most notably is the ability to overclock a CPU on the H81 chipset. (This feature was removed in the latest bios, so use H81SR123 to re-enable it.)

Not only can it overclock, but it has a full 16x PCI-e slot available, making it capable of using some fairly powerful GPUs.

Cons: Just a couple of small things. First was that it only has a 4-pin CPU power connector, so loads have to stay on the small side. Second was needing to go get an older bios version to enable board features. Not too big of a deal.

Other Thoughts: This is hands down my pick for a budget board. Comes packed with features at a super low cost. Good job Biostar!

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap

Other Thoughts: I bought this board because of the price and the good reviews. A little over a month after I received and installed it, the board crashed and I shipped it back to Biostar. They supposedly tested it and sent it back to me and said that there was nothing wrong with it and that I should try a different processor, ram, or power supply which I did. I even tried a new hard drive but the board still crashes and freezes. But, it serves me right because I should have learned a long time ago to stay away from cheap motherboards. You pay for what you get. If you purchase a cheap motherboard, then that's what you get. "A CHEAP MOTHERBOARD".
I am not even going to waste anymore money by shipping it back to Biostar. I am just going to spend a bit more money and purchase a new and better quality motherboard but definitely not a Biostar.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of your troubles, second RMA process Biostar will pay for the freight both ways. Please contact support@biostar-usa.com to start process.
