1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work

Pros: None

Cons: So before I buy a product, I look for reviews, and wish some websites would leave the reviews on there. I only found five reviews on this fairly new product last year. You can weed thru and not read the manufacturers reviews, and the real unhappy people. The reviews I read were ok-ish After I purchased it and found that the mother board I bought from best buy, a intel board, doesn't recognize the capture card. When I tried to find any updates or software for the card, what I found were new reviews stating that the card doesn't work for specific cards.

However StarTech Tech support and I went several steps to try to make it work. They believed it was a bad card, they were good enough to send a new one out and paid for shipping for the old one and the new one. The issue is that it still doesn't recognize the card. Recognizing the card means I tried all my PCI spots, which for my board I had a few options, the techs thought I might have installed it wrong, well going thru diagnostic, I didn't both times. The specifications for the card states that Intel boards should work, well my intel board it didn't work.

So for my review, sure it is easy to the card hardware in, but when it doesn't recognize the card, then install is a issue. How it performs, well I can say badly because it doesn't perform at all. The use of the product is not with ease. When the product says it's compatible, well it is not. The price of purchasing this card, well for the money and time for me trying to make it work was wasted.

And now looking for a replacement card, yes I still have the StarTech card that doesn't work, I find that the reviews are gone again... What good are reviews for researching a product, when the reviews have been deleted...

Pros: Good paperweight, but I returned it.

Cons: Short and simple, this card is garbage because StarTech technicians aren't knowledgeable about hardware at all. They don't even know their device conflicts with certain hardware, yet they act all high and mighty and say installation problems are related to conflicting software. Sorry StarTech get off your high horse and go back to school.

They won't care though because they're making so much money from the YouTube gaming commentary craze that they'll get apathetic customers who won't return, so they'll just keep making bank.

Other Thoughts: If StarTech replies to this comment with a "manufacturer's response" saying, "Oh we're sorry this didn't work bla bla" ignore it because that's just public relations whitewashing the subject at hand.

FYI the individual who commented isn't even emailed when a "manufacturer" replies to their comment.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card!

Pros: Good price, easy installation, plenty of input options

Cons: Limited software functionality and control

Other Thoughts: I purchased this capture card so I can record BIOS screens and Windows installations and BSOD errors for making better videos for my YouTube channel. By plugging the video output of the computer I want to film into the input of the capture card in a second computer, (with the monitor plugged into the video card of the second computer) I can clearly capture the BIOS and boot screens. The software allows me to output the file as an MP4 file, which I can then import into Camtasia to add zooms and other effects. I can then render that out of Camtasia (all done at 1920x1080 of course) and import that file into Cyberlink PowerDirector where I can edit it and combine it with other footage from both Camtasia and my camcorder. Because there is no sound during the screens I am trying to capture, I then can narrate audio in PowerDirector and edit the capture card video to fit my narration. Once complete, I can then do a master rendering out of PowerDirector and upload the video to YouTube in crystal clear 1920x1080 clarity. So much better then pointing the camcorder at the monitor for getting these shots!

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None

Cons: Cause computer to crash. Software does not allow you to do all of the features that is claimed in aid, such as it will not allow you to change video colors. And it will only allow you to record in two types of format AVI and MP4 once again this is not as advertised.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: none

Cons: Dead on arrival, failed to recognize or load in Windows 7. Did not show up in Device Manager after 2 hours of trouble shooting. ZERO customer support information online. No forum posts or workarounds. Just a 1-800 number with an answering machine. That's lame duck in today's age.

Other Thoughts: The specs look good but the product was DOA. I only opened this product well after the 30 day return period offered by Newegg. As a result, I now have to waste my personal time chasing the manufacture for an RMA/replacement. As a result, I won't be buying another product under this brand.

I wasted an entire evening of valuable production time on this problem. This has been an aggravating experience.

A/V pro with 20+ years experience.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat capture card for gaming

Pros: 1. Supports 240p though component and dvi-a which is useful for older gaming consoles.
2. Supports vga at various resolutions and rate.
3. Works with programs like xsplit and adobe flash media live for live streaming.

Cons: 1. Sometimes the red and blue channels are swapped on 240p content, swapping the red and blue cables fixes this on component, need to wire a switch for vga or just swap them when encoding.
2. Only works up to 1080i on hdmi and component? haven't tested dvi-d
3. Does not work with protected video, so no recording the PS3 though hdmi.

Other Thoughts: I mostly use this card to record arcade games directly from the pcb and most of them do not use video standard sizes and frame rate, this card handles them easily.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat multipurpose card with RGB input!

Pros: LOTS of input choices
Direct RGB (VGA) capture
15khz Support (read on)
DirectShow compatible

Cons: StarTech drivers are bad (read on)
DVI port pins can come loose, be gentle
No passthroughs, requires external splitter for lagless play

Other Thoughts: I have two of these in the PC I use to stream for the local fighting game community. I feel like I need to clear up a few things:

It supports 1080p30 and 720p60. You will need an i5 or better to smoothly capture anything higher than 480p60.

It's a DirectShow card, meaning you can use it just like a webcam. You may use any program of your choice to record raw video if you need to.

For lag-free play, you will need a powered external splitter as this card does have roughly 100ms of input lag.

This card is OEM manufactured as the "SC500 N1" by a company in Taiwan called YUAN High-Tech and rebranded by StarTech and others. It is worth tracking down the official YUAN drivers as they provide more options and better capture quality.

This card supports 15khz signals commonly used for old 240p game systems. Not only that, but it accepts it through VGA using the adapter. RGB is infinitely better looking than composite, and you can get RGB SCART or VGA cables for many old game syste

3 out of 5 eggsGood card but issues with 1080p

Pros: Easy install and setup. Software is just about idiot proof.

Cons: Card had problems receiving a 1080p signal (see other thoughts for more details), don't know if it is just my card or a common issue. Software is great for the most part but wish it had more customization options. Capped at 30fps in 1080i, and the interlaced scanlines were rendered poorly causing a blurry picture so to speak.

Other Thoughts: I took a gamble on this card because it had no reviews, but the only other 1080p capable capture card has horrible software. I bought this to play PS3 on my PC, so 1080p was ideal since it's the native resolution of my monitor. However, it refused to receive the 1080p signal, instead only giving me a black screen with audio. It would only take 1080i and below, and the picture was poor with 1080i so I went with 720p. So it still works for what i need it to and I will be keeping it because overall I'm happy I can still play my PS3 on my PC, but had to dock 2 eggs because it didn't work as advertised.

Note: in case anyone was wondering: This card is NOT HDCP compliant, so you CANNOT record video from a PS3/XBox/Blu-ray player/etc. I knew this from the start and never wanted to actually record but wanted pass along this info. You can still use FRAPS or MSI afterburner to capture video if you wanted (MSI is free!).
