4 out of 5 eggsWorks with ESXi 5.5.0 (Release VM Kernel 1331820)

Pros: It works with ESX on my HP Proliant Microserver N40L
I have been reading conflicting reviews on if it did or didn't.
No issues installing.
No upgrades necessary
Worked out of the box.

Cons: The con is that it was difficult to plug in the SAS cable. It is a very tight fit but it is doable.

Other Thoughts: I hate giving reviews just after installing so I will update this in 6-8 weeks. Hope this helps someone

2 out of 5 eggsDont waste your money on this

Pros: The card is very straightforward but in my infinite wisdom I thought this card would work regardless of the HCL(those of us will understand. Also the reason it didnt get 1 Egg). The WebOS is very clean and easy to understand. Drivers were easy to locate and the directions for them were OK.

Cons: Oh man! Tech support-consider it non-existent. Their website-HORRIBLE! The directions on the deployment of firmware via their CLI format-WORST!

Other Thoughts: Do yourself a favor and stay away from this card. I know LSI product over $400 for HW RAID is good. I have used their product plenty of times but this was by far the worst experience I have had.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I have used probably over 30 of these cards in various servers over the years and have never been let down. Perfect for the typical small business, low utilization file server.

Performance is good, you could do better(more $$...) but at this price point its perfect for basic RAID1/RAID10 in an entry level server.

Cons: LSI broke the functionality of the drive activity LED header roughly 2yrs ago, still not problem for me since the hot-swap racks(SS-400) have activity LEDs.

Also the cards ship with pretty old firmware, so you might want to upgrade it and save some potential headaches. Just copy MegaCLI and latest firmware to a DOS bootable USB, boot it up and type:
megacli -adpfwflash -f imr_fw.rom -a0

Other Thoughts: I have experienced the 'controller reset' error on newer Asus desktop mobo, the solution is to disable the CSM module and install your OS in UEFI mode instead of legacy boot.

I have also experienced the problem with CTRL+H to enter WebBIOS on Asus desktop board. This problem appears to happen after you configure a boot drive on the controller. If you unplug the SFF8087 cable from the controller, you can enter the WebBIOS. (obviously this will cause your array to become degraded). After initial config, I don't really ever have a need to use WebBIOS anyways, just use MegaCLI or the Storage Manager gui.

The real solution to both of these 'problems' is to use an actual server motherboard. LSI does not list any desktop boards on their HCL...

3 out of 5 eggsWould not work with Ubuntu

Pros: Good price
small and lightweight
raid was easy to set up in the pre boot menus

Cons: It refused to allow me to install Ubuntu Server. It would just stick at the boot option of the CD. Googling shows others had similar frustrations.
Loaded CentOS but I didnt want this.

Other Thoughts: Note the different retail packages. This one did not include the sas to sata cables, so I had to purchase that separately.
Tried with Two WD Blacks in RAID 3 and 5.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Actual hardware RAID with RAID5 checksum offloading.

Cons: Slow to boot.

Other Thoughts: Puts new drives into one-drive JBODs, which they must be taken out of to be put into an array. Confusing.

Configuration utility looks like Windows 95.

1 out of 5 eggs90s called, they want their card back!

Pros: Came in a nice box, fits nicely. Didn't get BSOD!

Cons: Awful compatibility, hair pulling drivers and firmware! Not a SATA 3 card! Out of the box, driver will not load (error 10) in Windows 7 x64. You need to upgrade firmware, card was shipped with 4.14). But here's a catch, you can't upgrade firmware if driver didn't load! There's virtually no info how to upgrade firmware anywhere on LSI site or included CD. Eventually I was able to create DOS boot USB and upgraded firmware from there. Windows took forever to load (it seemed to stay in POST screen for several minutes, but drivers did get load. As soon as I installed MegaRAID software, errors started to pop up. Every time I reboot I'd get "encountered critical error and was reset". When computer reads LSI BIOS you can't enter into settings by press Ctrl+H, it simple not working (google "LSI Ctr H"). I think it's incompatible with Asus mobo (I have P8Z77-V) or onboard Intel RAID, or both. It advertises as 6Gb/s but mentions in the instructions that it works with SATA 2 only. And there are no included cables. There's no way I'd trust it with my irreplaceable data! RMAed.

Other Thoughts: All I was looking for is reliable not terrible expensive RAID 1 card, doesn't need to be fast just something I can trust and take my RAID with me when I switch motherboards and LSI seemed to be popular and at good price (under $200). But what an awful experience getting it working. It takes me back to mid 90s. Remember IRQ conflicts and particular ISA/PCI slot locations, impossible to install drivers, awful support? Well it's like that. Driver depends on firmware and firmware cannot be installed without driver in Windows. Card crashes at every boot, and adds unhealthy 2-3 minutes to Windows 7 boot up time. Documentation is the worse I've ever seen, and this is one rare case where you will need it! I almost never give bad reviews, but please head all the negative reviews for this card, stay as far away as possible, especially if you have ASUS motherboard or another onboard RAID! And see, not a single reply to reviews from manufacturer, they just don't care.

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad, tricky getting going though

Pros: Works great with my Intel RES2SV240 SAS expander card, sees all 9 drives no problems. Fast (red/green drives are holding it back).

Cons: Is shipped with very old firmware, included disc contains no drivers, just a web link to the product page to download current drivers and software.

Other Thoughts: Upgraded my old LSI 3442E-R HBA with this card so I could use my 3 TB drives. After power on all connected drives were found. However upon loading WHS2011 and trying to install drivers things went downhill. Device manager seen the card, installed the drivers but got a could not start (code 10) error. From what I read there is an incompatibility with the firmware and many different MB BIOS(s) (Mine is the Asus P8H67-M with i7-3770k). Had to pull the card and install in an older computer (Vista 64 OS) and install drivers and megaraid software(Card was recognized and drivers installed smoothly) . After I downloaded and updated to latest firmware I moved the card back to the server. Drivers installed correctly and card is now working. Only problem is now after a restart I get an error that the card encountered a critical error and was restarted. Clear error code and business as usual. Maybe a future firmware update will fix that issue as well, who knows. Just something to be aware for those who aren't particularly tech savvy that this may or may not be an easy plug n play device.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised.

Pros: Works fine as hba on Linux 3.1.5 with megaraid_sas and ssd drive.

Cons: Some interaction with onboard controllers if they are enabled. May not be LSI's fault.

Other Thoughts: Onboard controller with 1 lane pci was a bottleneck. This hba solved that problem.
