5 out of 5 eggsMany Years of Use

Pros: I bought this enclosure back in 2006, and since then it has had many drives in it. I've used it on and off throughout the years (I try to be easy on tech stuff), and I've never had a huge problem. From data recovery to just porting around a lot of files, this enclosure has been worth many times what I paid for it.

I've had drives anywhere from 20-80gb in it and they've all done equally well, USB 2.0 will max out at 20-30mbps and most notebook drives are at least that fast so speed doesn't vary much.

Some people are saying this drive doesn't work with Windows 7, that is absolutely wrong. This drive works fine with Windows 7, I'm currently using it every single day at work with many Windows 7 computers. I suspect that these people have no idea how to initialize a drive. When you put a drive in, if there's no partition table, you need to go into Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management, then create and format a partition. If you put an uninitialized drive or one with a strange format (i.e. ext2/3 reiserFS, ZFS), Windows can't 'see' it. The drive is installed and functioning properly, you just won't see it under 'Computer' until you actually format it with something Windows can use.

Cons: It's best to have a drive insulator. IBM laptops all come with a wax-paper covered metal grid that can be easily attached. I've accumulated many of these over the years and so I just put that on the drive before putting it in this case. Otherwise, the drive electronics can touch the inside of the case. Not a likely issue as the inside is painted, but it's just good practice. If you're never going to use the drive for anything else again, Kapton tape works equally well.

Sometimes the drive will lock up during certain transfers. Unplugging the drive and plugging it back in fixes this. I always format it again to make sure there isn't any corrupt data on it. This is pretty rare but precludes using this enclosure for anything critical.

Other Thoughts: If I had a need for another one of these, I wouldn't hesitate to pick another one up. It works very well and it's super cheap. This enclosure has been very reliable and shows no signs of quitting any time soon.

5 out of 5 eggsGood bang for the buck

Pros: Worked right out of the box. Speed is not great but that is due to the old drive installed. Would buy this again and recommend this product to anyone.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: The drive case LED doesn't seem to indicate drive activity but still works.

4 out of 5 eggsgood for its price

Pros: It's very light and sleek looking, and it goes very well with my ultrabook as an external drive. It comes with a screwdriver and 2 backup screws in case you lost them.

Cons: It's quite slow and is not recommanded to put an SSD in it since it will cap the speed, but I won't complain too much at this price.

3 out of 5 eggsIDE case

Pros: not fully compatible with all IDE drives. Installed an older toshiba drive and kept getting write delay errors installed in another case worked fine. Ended up placing in a samsung newer IDE and is working fine as of now.

Cons: great case but seems to be not compatible on some drives.

Pros: Looks pretty, all is assembled easily

Cons: Purchased because it claimed to work on Win 7. Called the manfacturer and they told me to call NewEgg. IT WILL NOT WORK ON WINDOWS 7. It's being returned to New Egg.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: heavy duty, if this case breaks before the HD, you must not have a hard drive in it. Really simple. decent case cover. sweet looking exterior. looks better than the picture.

Cons: the screw driver sucks, but that's not why I got it (ended up using my own). the usb port was at a slight angle, so I have to push a little hard than I should to get it in, but I usually don't remove the cable. they only give you two screws, I like extras. I wish they gave me at least 4. shows fingerprints real easy.

Other Thoughts: it is being used in a shop environment, if it can survive there, it can survive anywhere.

Hitachi Travel star, draws one amp, but I can still use it with only one end plugged in

5 out of 5 eggsCheap and Reliable product

Pros: -Very long period of reliable use; over 5 years now, still going strong
-Speeds are what you'd expect for USB 2.0 and PATA
-Cheap; $10

Cons: -Screws are shoddy
-Drive doesn't mount to case
-drive somehow came unplugged internally over several years

Other Thoughts: Considering I paid $10 for this thing a dog's age ago, and it still works, and it is still available for sale, is a testament to its quality. Would buy again.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but case needs help

Pros: Inexpensive, works out of the box

Cons: Needed a push pin to create holes in the plastic facade so I could insert the screws included with the package.

Other Thoughts: Overall a good unit for the price. I'm running Win7Pro64 and it recognized it right away. No need to use the included CD for drivers. The front face piece is made of plastic with the outer case being sheet metal. The case has holes where the included screws should be inserted to hold the face on. The plastic wasn't pre-drilled so I grabbed a pushpin to create the needed hole for the screw. They include a screwdriver, but its so small it's hard to use. I used my own screwdriver and the case/face plate went together just fine. I'd by again if I needed another one.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat enclosure for laptop drives

Pros: Aluminum, slim, USB cable for data and power rather than two separate cables.

Cons: smaller drives (a Fujitsu 60GB) require that you add a spacer to avoid the drive moving around.

Other Thoughts: I have two of these that I've been using for several years. Very durable. Swap drives in and out all the time. Have used with a Fujitsu 60 GB, a Hitachi 100 GB and a Hitachi 30GB. Works great with all of them. I like that the USB cable has two connectors on one end for data and power. Don't always need the power but nice to have the option without having an extra cable. Standard USB connection on both ends of the cable. Indicator light on drive.

Great for recovering data off a laptop drive or using drives from older laptops as external storage - cheap way to get an external USB drive.
