An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.
Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)
That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 575 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution) at a great price. Could this be your next power supply?
Pros: As a component level servicer of electronics, I see lots of cheaply made junk these days. I have seen other power supplies assembled poorly, with horrible soldering and metal debris loose inside. I looked inside this unit and found the usual wave soldered p/c board without any production problems related to insufficient solder or dirt contamination. Critical high current connections were hand re-soldered, a great, but now uncommon, lifespan enhancing, quality detail. The leads were not too long or pulled tight, and were dressed properly. There was no garbage, solder blobs, or wire clippings inside. This is a well made unit, and a cut above other "premium" power supplies that only have a premium price and label. It has just the right cables for new machines including SATA power connectors. You can pay a lot more and get a lot less. It seems quieter than most, as well.
Cons: None, unless the color bothers you!
