Some people say that a single core processor isn't worth a hill of beans today. The Athlon 64 LE-1640 cut from a Lima die would beg to differ. The 2.7GHz processor is a great choice for a basic home or office computer. HyperTransport technology increases system performance by giving each core a dedicated cache of memory and reducing I/O bottlenecks by increasing bandwidth and reducing latency.

The 64-bit architecture keeps you going now and into the future. The AMD64 technology is compatible with existing software and it enables a seamless transition to the 64-bit applications of the future. This technology allows end users to take advantage of new innovations such as real-time encryption, more life-like games, accurate speech interfaces, cinema-quality graphic effects, and easy-to-use video and audio editing.

  • newegg AMD64 Technology AMD64 technology is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Direct Connect Architecture, AMD64 processors address and help eliminate the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures because everything is directly connected to the central processing unit.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency and point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems and networking and telecommunications equipment. HyperTransport Technology in the Athlon 64 LE-1640 processor enables the speed of system bus up to 2000MHz.
  • newegg Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Upgrade Choice

Pros: Lower power consumption, excellent cooling included, required HAL meets my repair needs.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Replaced a dead MoBo from an older single core AMD box. Was able to get HAL issues dealt with in a single boot, and Windows reactivated without loosing anything on the original hard drive.

5 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: Excellent for a Low-Mid Budget Gaming PC ... maybe more Low gaming profile bt still can play COD4 with a geforce 8400 with a low resolution but high..ish details

Cons: none, for the priice is great... oh and think of going with Windows XP

Other Thoughts: too cheap, built this for a Web Developer and put some games and runs nice, but then again Gaming is not its top priority, like me ;P

5 out of 5 eggsUpgrade your HP EX47x WHS

Pros: Plug n play in an AM2 socket. Respectable performance for the price, esp if you are limited to a single core CPU path. Retail package, so it includes the heatsink/fan and 3yr warranty (you can't use the heatsink/fan in the MediaSmart WHS BTW). Low voltage a plus when upgrading from a Sempron to retain similar thermal footprint. Trusted source (the Egg)...

Cons: Smallish L2 Cache (640kb) compared to an older model (Orleans) that had 1MB - but I could not find one of those anywhere else.

Other Thoughts: Bought the HP EX470 MediaSmart Home Server from newegg and wanted to upgrade the CPU based on a lot of WHS web sites. Great instructions out there and after initial hesitation, I pulled the trigger and made the switch from the factory Sempron. I wouldn't say it's blazing now, but there was an marked improvement in everything I've asked the HP to do. Also did the Ram upgrade from 512kb to 2GB. That made a bigger difference IMO. Final thought - buy the Artic Silver thermal compound here and redo the paste on the northbridge cooler at the same time. I had no heat issues what-so-ever afterwards. Temps are the same or even a bit cooler now even though I've got a 2.7GHz proc instead of the 1.7 proc.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: Works as 64 bit as single core cpu.
Works with FreeNas.
Performs how I thought it would.

Cons: Low l2 cache.
The 1620le version of this has 1mb and this has 640kb.

Other Thoughts: When I am uploading a lot of data to my FreeNas box it only works at around 35-40% load which isn't bad. I have full logging on as well.

5 out of 5 eggsUPDATE

Pros: Another user described not being able to play Call of Duty World at War with this CPU. I gotta say, it runs just fine for me on my system with this CPU, I get about 35 to 60 FPS ( it fluctuates ) while playing with a NVIDIA 768MB Fatality 9600GSo. Keep in mind, this isn't the best card out there, it's compared with a NVIDIA 8800GS. And since world at war requires more computer to run it. Call of Duty 4 seems to say in the 50's to 70's FPS area. Didn't Overclock the GPU settings, just the processor to 3.1GHz while running Windows Xp Pro x64. One more thing, I'm running at 3.1GHz at a steady 35degrees Celcius when idle and for the most part.

Cons: This thing feels much more responsive than my AMD Phenom II X4 955Be while running Kubuntu -Linux..

My 955Be is running Vista Ultimate x64 which is why.

Other Thoughts: I benchmarked this CPU using Sandra SiSoftware and compared this to a Pentium D 920. These two processors compared were actually very close in speed which say's a whole lot about this single core CPU.

Not running Windows Xp x64 any more, I turned this into my Linux box.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap Power

Pros: I purchased this to make a new build for my mother. All she seems to do is watch video's and pay bills, so this seems to suffice. Although it's questionable for any gaming purpose, it's not impossible.

Cons: Lima sounds like Lima bean.

Other Thoughts: AMD + Newegg = Excellent.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is a wonderful little cpu, It plays all the games I want, idles at appx 34c and goes up to 40c gaming.

Cons: None that I can think of. Benchmarks higher than a 3ghz processor and I don't know why.

Other Thoughts: ok, I lied 42c playing Crysis warhead on high settings :)

5 out of 5 eggsSimple File Server Processor

Pros: This processor is working great for me. I'm using it in a simple Linux file server and am having no problems at all. One great advantage of AMD processors is that their OEM heat sink is so much easier to install than Intel's. The low price and power usage make this a great buy for a low processor usage system.

Cons: There's the obvious issue of it being a single core, but I didn't need that.
