Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies. The 9150E has 4 cores that run at 1.8GHz. The quad-core Phenom processor has L1 and L2 caches for each core 2MB of L3 cache is available to be shared to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.

Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Add that to the 17.1GB/s from the integrated memory controller for an amazing 33.1GB/s of memory bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.

You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

  • newegg AMD64 Quad-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. • newegg HyperTransport 3.0 Technology HyperTransport 3.0 Technology (HT 3.0) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT 3.0 technology the AMD Phenom 9150E processor enjoys 3200MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg AMD Virtualization Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
  • newegg AMD CoolCore Technology AMD CoolCore Technology reduces processor energy consumption by turning off unused parts of the processor. Power can be switched on or off within a single clock cycle so that energy is saved without compromising performance.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful budget quad

Pros: Runs pretty cool with stock heat sink despite stresses.
The extra 3 cores keep the system stable when running multi-threaded programs like games.
Most powerful quad core processor available for my cheapo mobo that runs on low power.
Can be clocked down easily inside of Linux to save on electricity when running your computer all night to grab those pesky 4.2gig Linux dvd images.

Cons: Despite the extra cores the computer boots Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (64bit) only slightly faster than it previously had with the single core AMD with Ubuntu Linux 9.04(32bit). But I'm still booting in under a minute with Ubuntu (about 48secs). While arch (64 bit) and slackware64 13 were booting at about 30 secs no modification. This is probably because the software for booting the OS is still only single threaded and thus doesn't boot much faster.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to upgrade my cheapo Linux gaming/multimedia rig. It has proven that it can do its job efficiently. I can see needing a better processor still when I want to run multiple multi-threaded programs at a time but that'll probably be a ways off.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: LOW POWER, Runs cool, powerful enough for everyday tasks and some casual gaming, four cores!

Cons: Lower clock speed per core, hard to find (thank you, Newegg!!), older 65nm process.

Other Thoughts: This processor is excellent for those who use their computer primarily for home/office use and/or media center use. If you're looking for a gaming CPU, this is not what you should buy. The power usage of this chip is excellent, and it therefore runs very cool (around 27 to 32 degrees Celsius in my computer with an average fan). I highly recommend this, as it is efficient and very affordable, and has four cores for the multitasking of the everyday user.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 gives it 6.5

Pros: I guess the main pro would be the price if it works, and it does. Windows 7 gives it a surprising subscore value of 6.5. That beats my AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (3.21 ghz) by 0.2 points. And, it's a quad. I have 2 Phenoms. The other one is a tri core and runs my media center. It has been operating non stop pretty much for over 6 month. It is solid as a rock. I expect this quad will be the same, but only time will tell.

Cons: Can't think of any right now.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for a cheap build to run my 2 ham radios. They don't need much so I didn't want to spend a bunch, and this along with an ASRock MOB with video fit the bill. I was surprised when I saw the W7 experience factor rating. I guess it could be overclocked, but I don't do that. I would like to hear from some overclockers though and see what they think.

5 out of 5 eggsCool and Quiet and Economical

Pros: Another great AMD CPU! Top feature is low heat generation. Means fans don't have to be cranked all the way up. Using in a distributed computing environment and crunches numbers very nicely.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The OEM heatsink is wimpy and not used. Would have liked to see one of the AMD OEM heatsinks that uses heatpipes, not just a block of aluminum with a fan on top.

3 out of 5 eggsTook over a week to arrive

Pros: It works

Cons: The fan is loud, and my system is running half as fast as it did in most things than when I had a dual core. Last, I paid 3-day shipping, and Newegg took 7. No refund either.

Other Thoughts: The shipping was only $10 but for me, that's 10 meals. I paid 3 day shipping, it took 7, and I do not like excuses from businesses about "Oh, well I don't wanna do what you paid me for, it's inconvienient" and I will think seriously about going to the local elctronics store next time I need something. 9 days with no computer after I already paid for the parts, is unacceptable.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Really inexpensive for a quad core. comes with a fan. 2 eggs because i am a fan of amd and newegg.com takes care of me.

Cons: It died on me after about 4 months only running it on average an hour a day or so. only 1.8ghz per core - great for multiple aps, but not great for gaming or any intense programs what-so-ever.

Other Thoughts: I do not recommend. for running many aps at once, go with at least a little bit faster processor. for gaming or big aps, go with a faster dual core like AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.9GHz. I replaced this one with this dual core after it died.

5 out of 5 eggsGood enough for Flash development

Pros: It works and it's fast.

Cons: The fan it comes with is loud enough to bother me.

Other Thoughts: My system includes two 2 GB DDR2 1066 RAM chips (which run at 800 MHz) and has been sufficient for the development of Flash games.

With the heat sink and fan that this comes with, no other case fans, it idles at about 40 C.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Fast
Cool
4 Cores
Only 65W

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I'm using this for a home theater pc and it is perfect. Paired with a Radeon HD3200 it can play Left 4 Dead and still runs extremely cool. Highly recommend.
