AMD's Sempron 140 is a great choice for HTPCs and other applications where low noise and low heat are major factors. This would also be a great choice for remote systems used to control video walls. You could also use it for building a dedicated print server system.

This 2.7GHz processor only draws 45W of power and still has all the features that make AMD processors great. The on-chip memory controller and HyperTransport technology combine for a 17.0GB/s processor to system bandwidth. It also comes with Cool'n'Quiet technology to increase power efficiency even further.

  • newegg AMD64 Technology AMD64 technology is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Direct Connect Architecture, AMD64 processors address and help eliminate the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures because everything is directly connected to the central processing unit.
  • newegg Integrated DDR2/DDR3 Memory Controller The AMD Sempron 140 processor is integrated with a DDR2/DDR3 memory controller capable of supporting registered and ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Sempron 140 processor enjoys 6.4GB/s system bus speeds.
  • newegg AMD Cool'n'Quiet Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology is an innovative solution available on AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast processor. Unlocked great and overclocked to 4.0ghz after boosting voltage a little bit. Very cheap and worth the money.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This processor is worth the money even if you aren't going to unlock it, its still fast and will still get every day tasks done.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy me?

Pros: I purchased this processor as my motherboard would not post with my Phenom II x6 1100T without a bios upgrade..
Installed this cpu, upgraded bios, then boxed back up..

Cons: None, it posted and enabled me to upgrade my bios..

5 out of 5 eggsLovely little low power processor

Pros: I use this for my Windows Home Server build - works perfectly. It's single core (I tried unlocking the second but it wasn't stable) but gets the job done. Quiet fast for server needs and most importantly low power.

Cons: The AMD heatsink is dinky - if you plan to do any overclocking at all you should probably be buying a third-party one.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for unRAID

Pros: I'm using this in an unRAID Home Media Server. It works for what I need it to, which isn't very processor intensive at all. I cannot comment on its ability to handle a full blown Windows Installation.

I wanted it for it's low power consumption since the server is on 24/7 and I need as much power as possible for all the HDD's the system has to support.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Bang for Little Buck

Pros: Ran windows XP just fine. It now runs my Windows 7 64bit OS slower but thats what I expected. I have mine overclocked at 3.3 Ghz using my motherboards BIOS. Planning on replacing it soon with one of the Phenoms.

Cons: It isn't the best at running SC2. I only get an average of 6 frames a second with this. Another note when OCing, OC slowly.

Other Thoughts: Probably another factor for the low FPS is my Video Chip, it is onboard my motherboard, so don't dock that if your going to buy this.

5 out of 5 eggs2 for 2

Pros: Great little cpu as long as it either unlocks or you don't have high expectations of it to begin with. I've bought 2 of them now and they both unlocked, have a third on the way. Sadly I won't get to see if 3rd one unlocks as it'll be going into a board that lacks the ability.

Cons: None so long as you don't have unreasonable expectations for it.

Other Thoughts: Someone else mentioned buying 5 of these and 5 matching motherboards and only one unlocked then blamed it on the other 4 mainboards for not unlocking. If the boards support unlocking then they will always unlock an unlockable CPU. Problem is that not all of these chips are unlockable some of them actually have a bad second core.

I've had numerous athlon II's unlock and its fun when they do, a little something for nothing.

5 out of 5 eggsworked, no probs, low power requirements

Pros: low price,
bought 2 and both worked fine,
low power usage,
low heat from this CPU,
great for non-CPU intensive computers,
single core, and still compatible with modern socket AM3

Cons: none, just know it's not a high performance CPU when buying

5 out of 5 eggsGood on the Cheap

Pros: Stably unlocked the second core with my sabertooth mobo. plays sims 3 fine on reasonable settings with a 9400gt PCI.

Cons: not enough stock cooler to overclock. software that comes on the mini-cd is annoying, dont install it.

Other Thoughts: im telling my friends to buy these and do the same. nice that it comes with free AVG. wish it would have came with AMD Overdrive on the cd instead of that other junk. will hold me over till Bulldozer comes out...
