5 out of 5 eggsGreat mid build processor

Pros: There was a time that AMD processors had a reputation of running a bit hot but those issues are firmly in the past. AMD processors are always a good "bang for the buck" purchase when building your own PC. This AMD Ahthlon II X2 255 3.1GHz processor has an excellent L2 cache and scores in the high sixes on the Windows Experience rating. Mujlti core processors are designed for multi-tasking applications and if this fits your user profile they are an excellent buy. This CPU requires an AM3 socket which allows use of DDR3 RAM.

Cons: None noted.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Very Impressed With Performance

Pros: Ice cold temps for AMD, idles at 31C & 44C under full load. OC'd from the stock 3.1 Ghz to 3.7 Ghz without touching voltage at all. The bus is clocked from the 200 Mhz stock to 238 Mhz totalling to 3690 Mhz while scoreing a very respectable WEI rating of 6.7 on a $60 dual core. That's .4 away from my 7.1 rating on my i7 Q740 MSI GT660r gaming laptop that I paid $1200 for.

Cons: None what so ever!!!!!

Other Thoughts: I had the neighbor kid come to me with $400 to build a gaming system for WOW he was running an integrated Nvidia 6150, 1gb DDR2, and a first gen dual core. IT WAS HORRIBLE TO WATCH!! We chose this chip, 4gb G-Skill ddr3 1600, Biostar A880G+, and a GTX260 on sale. This was the first AMD machine I have built in at least 2 years. I will say I am impressed with price versus performance with AMD they are great with that. Now if they could only release an enthusiast chip that will surpass or at least fight against a current intel enthusiast chip. 8 core FX is a flopp.

4 out of 5 eggssolid cpu

Pros: Bought this with biostar a880g+ combo. Plugged everything in and boot fine first time. The CPU is solid. After getting the system up and running, I OC'd it to 225 MHz bus which puts the core at 3.488GHz. No voltage adjustment and runs stable not a single crash. Idle core temp around 31C.

Cons: This may not be a real con but this CPU/MB combo replaced a Phenom 8450e (AM2+) on ECS A740GM-M board. According to the benchmark site, these two cpus score about the same with the Athlon a little better. I always hear people saying the phenom I is old technology etc so I expect the newer Athlon runs faster. But I don't think it makes a difference. I still feel that same "sticky/choking" problem browsing some webs with Internet explorer (could just be the terribly designed IE).

Other Thoughts: I don't do much games but played TF2 on it with onboard video (radeon 4250) without problems. Also, playing HD movies at 1080p without any problems. CPU usage at 35% on HD movies. This CPU handles what I needed well.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy install, fast, inexpensive

Pros: Bought this processor plus Biostar MB to upgrade my wife's computer from a Pentium 4. Installed easily and was a huge jump in performance (including graphics performance with the MB's onboard Radeon 4250) even with the move to Windows 7 from Windows XP. No need to pay more to run the apps she uses on Windows 7. Included heatsink/fan combo is low profile and low noise.

Cons: None to speak of.

Other Thoughts: No regrets.
