Intel’s most popular family member looks better than ever. The 2nd generation Intel Core i5 processor delivers even more performance automatically when you need it and now has a better visual PC experience built-in. With Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, the 2nd generation Intel Core i5 processor increases your PC’s speed automatically for your demanding applications. It also includes built-in graphics and a rich set of new features for a stunning and seamless visual PC experience with no additional hardware required. That's visibly smart performance with a boost.

  • newegg Fully integrated Microarchitecture on 32nm Process The Intel microarchitecture codename Sandy Bridge is an incredible leap in processor integration and manufacturing introduced in the 2nd generation Intel Core processor family. Manufactured entirely on Intel 32nm process technology, Sandy Bridge unifies processor cores, memory controller, last-level cache (LLC), and graphics and media processing. Such tight integration enables a host of performance and efficiency improvements, including fast access by cores and graphics to shared data in the last-level cache which accelerate graphics processing, fewer buses over which data and signaling must travel for faster processing, and more memory bandwidth for the cores to boost system performance.
  • newegg Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 More intelligent, energy-efficient, and dynamic than the previous generation, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 gives you accelerating performance when you need it. It delivers an even greater automatic speed increase by allowing processor and graphics cores to run faster than the base operating frequency for demanding applications if the processor is operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.
  • newegg Intel Smart Cache Intel Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from faster, more efficient cache subsystem resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Integrated DDR3 Memory Controller Integrated memory controller enables two channels of DDR3 1333 MHz memory, resulting in up to 21 GB/sec memory bandwidth. Plus the memory controller's lower latency and higher memory bandwidth delivers amazing performance for data-intensive applications.
  • newegg Built-in Visuals The 2nd generation Intel Core processors integrate a suite of technologies built right into the processor that deliver stunning visual experiences. Intel Quick Sync Video is breakthrough hardware acceleration that makes fast work of creating, editing, synchronizing, and sharing your videos at home and on the internet. Built-in Intel HD Graphics enables superior mainstream gaming and 3D experiences – without the need for a discrete graphics card. Enjoy stunning visual quality and color fidelity for spectacular HD playback and immersive web browsing with Intel Clear Video HD Technology, plus the ultimate 3D visual experiences seamlessly from your PC with Intel InTru 3D Technology.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Increasing manageability, security, and flexibility in IT environments, virtualization technologies like hardware-assisted Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) combined with software-based virtualization solutions provide maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server or PC. By abstracting the software away from the underlying hardware, a world of new usage models opens up that reduce costs, increase management efficiency, strengthen security, while making your computing infrastructure more resilient in the event of a disaster.

5 out of 5 eggsFast

Pros: Fast
Intel HD support

Cons: Stock cooler feels flimsy

Other Thoughts: This processor is fast. Don't feel like I would need an i7 chip compared to this one. Able to save money on initial build by using Intel HD until able to get a dedicated graphics card.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for gaming

Pros: I only use it for gaming, and it does so very well.
Playes nice with my 5970

Cons: Idles around 50C on air, and gets to higher 80's on full load. I would water cool it, but my case has no room, (Mini ITX). I personalyl do not like to see such high temps, but it is normal for Intel to be that hot

5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy I Chose This One

Pros: Everything there is to say here has already been said... it's fast, efficient, affordable, etc. Don't think you're going to hurt your performance by taking this over a 2500K or an Ivy Bridge chip... the bottleneck is not in the CPU anymore (it's in disk I/O).

Cons: Nothing, if you're honest.

Other Thoughts: I spent a lot of time thinking about all the options... K series, P series, going all in on an i7, going pure budget with an i3... in the end, I'm really happy to go with the bottom end of the i5 series.

I snatched mine during the Thanksgiving Day sales... it was $20 bucks cheaper for a few hours and I was ready to jump on it. Was also lucky to have a 20% off coupon so I ended up getting it for about the same price as the lower i3's. :)

I'm not much of a tweaker so that's why I didn't go with a K series... it's just not worth it if you aren't planning on doing any overclocking anyway. All of the i3, i5 and i7 Sandy/Ivy Bridge chips are overwhelmingly fast and powerful... you really can't go wrong with any of them.

I wanted to stay on target with my budget so I didn't make the jump to the i7's and I don't think it hurt me in the least... again, all these chips have loads of performance.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Processor is running PERFECTLY. I've been streaming League of Legends, Diablo 3, Battlefield 3, and other games with no feeling of strain whatsoever on the processor. Everything still runs smooth, I couldn't ask for anything better! (Well I could, but my wallet says no)

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsBest CPU

Pros: This blows my previous Phenom II X4 955 out of the water. Never going back with AMD! Intel HD Graphics are pretty amazing too! But a dedicated graphics card would be best if youre gaming.

5 out of 5 eggsFast And Price Effective

Pros: Fast
Responsive
Runs all games and programs perfectly

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Power House, have it overclocked to 3.2ghz, I see no reason why I should spend a hundred dollars more for an i7. I play all games, while burning, downloading and surfing the web without a hiccup. Running a Samsung 120 gb SSD, 8Gb of Ram, XFX 5770 and a 650w silverstone PS. I have not had any issues with anything what so ever...

5 out of 5 eggsClassic Intel, reliable and fast

Pros: Installed this CPU into my AsRock Z77
extreme4 mobo and it works great, it isn't overclocked so I can't speak for how hard you can push it, but it's reliable like most Intel CPU's are. Also, at the $160 pricetag I got for it, it was reasonably affordable.

Cons: I never liked the stock heatsinks that come with Intel cpus. Had a hard time with the twist knobs on the one I got, but could very well just be an issue of applying enough pressure.

Other Thoughts: Make sure to note how the knobs are aligned when placing the heatsink in the mobo.
