Crush your enemies, climb the tower of paperwork, or do both at the same time. Intel's Core 2 Quad Q9650 not only makes it possible, it makes it easy. The Core 2 Quad Q9650 has quad cores that run at 3.0GHz and shares 12MB of L2 cache.

Quad cores means true multi-tasking and multi-threading. Tasks or threads get their own core; no more sharing one core and set of clock cycles. This lets you turn your system into the ultimate home entertainment center PC. One core handles the usual action on your operating system, while the second can play a DVD on the TV, the third download a file from internet, and the fourth one sends audio to the kids in another room with no lags or stutters. All this is made easier with Intel’s advanced Digital Media Boost.

The 45nm Intel Core 2 Quad processor is armed Intel HD Boost, which implementing new Intel Streaming SIMD Extension 4.1 (Intel SSE4.1) instructions for fast high definition video editing and encoding, enhance the multimedia performance.

  • newegg Intel Core 2 Quad-core Processor With four processing cores, the multitasking monster Quad-Core Intel Core 2 processor delivers fourfold the performance on highly-threaded applications, taking your desktop PC experience into a completely new realm of mega power. The powerful processor delivers serious performance on the ultra-demanding games of today and tomorrow. The innovative 45nm quad-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Wide Dynamic Execution With Intel Wide Dynamic Execution, each of the four cores can complete up to four full instructions simultaneously, improves execution speed and efficiency, delivering more instructions per clock cycle.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.

5 out of 5 eggsPurchased 2/27/2009; Still My Powerhouse 12/21/13

Pros: Cache, speed, longevity, pure power.

Cons: How can you have a con for a CPU you have been using hard for coming up on 5 years?

Other Thoughts: O/C'd to 3.33 since it was new. Has run 24/7/365 for nearly 5 years, except for maintenance and new motherboards.

It is still a high-end CPU.

I am now almost totally laptop/desktop replacement: Samsung i5; SONY VAIO i5; HP Elite Haswell i7-Quad; MacbookPro 13" Retina i5. STILL, when I am home, I do what I need with my Q9650. I don't game, but I do a lot of transcoding and BOINC. It isn't bleeding edge, but it is still a serious monster CPU.

5 out of 5 eggsStill Faster

Pros: Quite a fast and efficient CPU whose TDP is only 165 watts (allows for a worry free upgrade for other components that draw power).
It has 12MB 8 way level 2 cache which is much more efficient than 2 MB level 3.
It is actually faster than a stock Core i7 at the same clock speeds.

Cons: Stock cooling unit is noisy but only at extreme use (no game I know of requires 3.0 GHz clock range and only if you have a slow video card.

Other Thoughts: It appears faster than my intel core i3 @ 2.4 GHz on another computer I own, technically they are supposed to be equivalent but I would still rate the stock Core 2 Quad Q9650 much fastener as the core i3 has level 3 cache and only 3mb of it. For those who don't know, level 3 cache is very slow and inefficient, so Intel decided to unlock the clock rates on the core i series for compensation.

4 out of 5 eggsGood processor, struggles with high end games

Pros: 4 Cores
High speed

Cons: Didn't perform as I expected, has trouble running a lot of games despite meeting the requirements

Price is higher than processors that are faster

I feel this processor wasn't exactly for gaming, or maybe my GTX 285 is holding it back? I'm not sure

Other Thoughts: I should of waited and bought a stronger processor, I understand that game developers aren't optimizing games for 4 cores, but a stronger processor is required to play most of the terrible ports coming out now-a-days, while games made for pc are running superb

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome CPU

Pros: I built this machine over 4 years ago and this CPU is still going strong

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: May upgrade to a i7 but have to go with a HEX core to get the same L3 :(

5 out of 5 eggsStill kicking

Pros: Its still running GREAT!!!! Have had this processor on my main pc for 2 years and do everything i want with it NO waiting. I work on Computers for a living and even do custom builds. This cpu runs smoother and snappier than most core I7.

Cons: High RPM hard drives are too expensive without large storage.

Other Thoughts: Q9650 3.4 ghz, 16gb DDR2 Gskill, ATI Radeon HD 5770,
4 1tb seagate 7200 rpm hard drives, Ocz water cooling dual radiators with 4 120 mm fans, nzxt mid tower, 800w power supply

5 out of 5 eggsBeen a Power House for years

Pros: I just ordered a 580 GTX SLI board (2 gpu), and I started thinking "hrmm I wonder if my CPU (this cpu) will be a bottleneck?" So I did some research and was plesently suprized that I'm still good to go its borderline but Its still good. I looked up my order history on newegg and I can't believe I built this system over 2 years ago and its still going strong, this shocks me because I usualy ride the wave of technology. I have ADHD and upgrade my PC the instant it makes me wait for anything. So the fact that I'm still using this processor speaks wonders.
So I recommend anyone still using LGA775 and considering this processor as a CPU upgrade to do it. No reason to build it.

Cons: They all come with those generic intel CPU fan/coolers, I recommend upgrading it. There are alot of options.

Other Thoughts: System Built in 8-2009
Overclocked to 3.4 on air (had no reason to push it further)
16 gig ddr2
Raid 0 SSD OCZ Vertex 2
Dell 30"
1st vid 8800gtx 8-2009
2nd vid 285gtx 6-2010 (died 8-2011)
3rd vid 2x 580gtx sli 9-2011

This should last me another year or two hopefully past Dec 12th 2012 :P. It seems CPU's have finally become fast enough to last more than two years and still be useful. I've had this system longer than any other system I've built since the early 90's

My two personal favorite upgrades of all time.
30" Monitor (eye candy) 2560x1600 :)
SSD Boot Drives (no load times for anything)

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the best CPU's out there

Pros: Easy to overclock, 12 MB L2 cache makes this cpu pretty competent.

Cons: Price. As this cpu is not produced anymore, its prices are not going down.

Other Thoughts: This old man can easily take down an overclocked AMD 1090t with 6 real cores. I absolutely love this cpu.

5 out of 5 eggsStill thinks this really rocks

Pros: This processor runs really well. On the ASUS mombo. Serial # P5QPL- VM EPU Motherboard works really well. Classic 775 socket on that model works great. Real fast quick to the point with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit . Motherboard has ability to overlap memory in BIOS , A real plus when using Kingston 4x2 GB. Pretty pricy stuff to do now but that processor held for a couple of years I paid cheap for it when I built it for I built it when this was cheap two kingstons memory DDR 2 cost me $160. So got a good deal now that must be more. But it is a great machine that I feel will last forever with upgrades and it will handle almost the PC you say yeah baby your the best. I mean I get a 7.3. In memory and processes. Gaming with my nividia graphics 1 GB just really you see this is your private server for a good home grown business, whatever you into it rocks. Less fixing windows more having fun with windows. This was not the average stock processors that came built for you .

Cons: Like I said maybe too late to do it for cheap like I did it when it first came out get a cheaper if this computing program of building is not cheap anymore. But if is get it you will see the quality that Intel processing is made to last forever. I really believe I wont need a upgrade from the one I have and love. So get lucky with this if can't just find a newer one that will run for you forever. The secret is to get it new and cheap. But with high specs . And rock on peace.

Other Thoughts: Well I think I finally see the truth behind advertising. Or should I say intel does not need anymore upgrades in performance anymore they got it with quad cores. All new chips run pretty much the same and it is cheaper. Now the upgrade in chips is just. Pretty much for better HD graphics and handing. More for 3D effects. But speed how much faster can windows go. I have single click on windows mouse settings set and I click by mistake through a thousand folders like quick lol so speed from the quad and beyond will pretty much clock the same in speed. INTEL finally got it right from this point of the duo core and Quad processors. Just my opinion :)
