Crush your enemies, climb the tower of paperwork -- or do both at the same time. Intel's Core 2 Quad Q9400S not only makes it possible, it makes it easy. The Core 2 Quad Q9400S has four cores that run at 2.66GHz and shares 6MB of L2 cache.

Quad cores means true multi-tasking and multi-threading. Tasks or threads get their own core; no more sharing one core and set of clock cycles. This lets you turn your system into the ultimate home entertainment center PC. One core handles the usual action on your operating system, while the second can play a DVD on the TV, the third download a file from internet, and the fourth one sends audio to the kids in another room with no lags or stutters. All this is made easier with Intel’s advanced Digital Media Boost.

The 45nm Intel Core 2 Quad processor is armed with Intel HD Boost, which implements new Intel Streaming SIMD Extension 4.1 (Intel SSE4.1) instructions for fast high definition video editing and encoding, enhance the multimedia performance.

  • newegg Intel Core 2 Quad-core Processor With four processing cores, the multitasking monster Quad-Core Intel Core 2 processor delivers fourfold the performance on highly-threaded applications, taking your desktop PC experience into a completely new realm of mega power. The powerful processor delivers serious performance on the ultra-demanding games of today and tomorrow. The innovative 45nm quad-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Advanced Smart Cache Intel Advanced Smart Cache Technology dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, multi-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, resulting in significantly reduced latency for frequently used data and improved performance.
  • newegg Intel Wide Dynamic Execution With Intel Wide Dynamic Execution, each of the four cores can complete up to four full instructions simultaneously, improves execution speed and efficiency, delivering more instructions per clock cycle.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Powerhouse with less power demand gigibyte board says on idle the cpu only uses 4 watts

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Low heat output even at full load. My SG45H7's fan has yet to spin up above minimum rpm.

Cons: Price premium for the lower wattage. Clock speed only drops to 2GHz during idle.

Other Thoughts: At full load, the SG45H7 with the Q9400S puts out less heat than my SN85G4V3 w/ single-core AMD 3GHz at idle. My office doesn't warm up like it used to.

5 out of 5 eggsSave electricty (and heat)

Pros: 65W TDP is best in class for a 4 core CPU, along with the far more expensive Q9550S.
The speed, while not the fastest, is very good for the price you pay.
This is an excellent choice for workstations and even servers (more below).

Cons: The CPU only throttles down to 2 GHz when near idle, which is rather high, making the light load power consumption higher than it could have been.
No hyperthreading.

Other Thoughts: If running flat out, it's very power frugal with 65W TDP.
It's also a good choice for a server CPU, because there are no quad core Xeon CPUs with a TDP as low as this.

Beware that the secondary cache arrangement isn't really 6 MB, but 2*3 MB, which makes this CPU behave like two dual core CPUs with 3 MB cache each. For multithreaded apps that use shared memory, setting the CPU affinity so you only use cores 0/1 or 2/3 for the process can give a radical speed boost.

5 out of 5 eggsNice CPU for the price

Pros: Fast

Cons: Not an i7

Other Thoughts: Not much to say, the specs say it alone. It's a great CPU and I have it running cool on an itx intel board housed in a Lian-Li PC-Q07 chassis.

4 out of 5 eggsExpensive, but worth it

Pros: I wanted a processor that would be powerful, but I equally wanted one that wouldn't put out a lot of heat, so I wouldn't need a noisy CPU cooler. This processor fulfills both of these conditions. I'm quite happy with it.

Cons: Expensive. I'm sure it's just because this is a new line of processors and the price will come down in time, but it was the single most expensive part in my new build by a large margin.
