3 out of 5 eggsFatal Flaw?

Pros: Works very fast. I originally picked this up in 2013 for $90 on Newegg. My Windows 7 boot would complete in less than 20 seconds including startup tasks. The speed that I got during that time probably accounts for most of my score.

Cons: Windows gradually slowed down. Figured I had too many programs, startup items, background programs or possibly a virus. None of the above. It degraded to the point where it took many minutes to boot. Then eventually not at all. It was ridiculously frustrating. My problems were compounded by a Seagate that was/is nearly on the verge of completely bricking. Thankfully I have a trusty 5+year old SATA 2 WD 640GB HDD to do its job, but as expected it's not very fast.

Other Thoughts: After I bought a new SSD (PNY 240GB CS1100, a decent drive), I installed new OS on it (Win 8.1 instead of 7 this time). I only had programs on the Seagate so after multiple attempts I manually reformatted it through cmd. It was 98% fragmented and resisted defrag and other tools. After the reformat went through I put less than 5GB of files/programs on it and it was already 41% fragmented.

While this certainly didn't help my issues I had unplugged and isolated the Samsung to test it out.

After affirming the Samsung 840 degraded, I then reformatted it because as I noted the drive was useless as a boot drive. I have reformatted it to a small program drive and it has worked wonderfully so far. I have put a bunch of programs on it and everything works perfectly. In my opinion, this aligns with the idea of the read degradation on the Samsung 840s. Samsung claims it doesn't affect the regular 840s, just the EVO, but that's what happened to mine.

Pros: was good when it was working

Cons: died after 1.5yrs in a laptop. while the drive will mount, any attempt to write to it causes the machine to hang

5 out of 5 eggsGoing Strong for 2 years and almost 5TB later

Pros: Great drive with plenty of storage space to use as a system drive. I've owned the drive for about 2 years and have written 4.76TB to the drive and it still says the health is in good condition.

Cons: Price has went up $11 since 2 years ago

Other Thoughts: Good drive, plenty of storage. I'd recommend it!

5 out of 5 eggsStill Running

Pros: After 1 year and ~6 months this drive still works. Speed is still there and as far as I can tell, I don't see any wear on this drive. I expect it to last another 10 years.

Cons: None what so ever.

Other Thoughts: Over the years I've had several ssds. The ones from OCZ, Kingston and AData all fail within months. This piece of hardware has performed so well and lasted so long that I at this point in time will only suggest Samsung brand ssd's to other people. Hah, I feel like I should be sponsored by Samsung for all the business I've brought them.

I paired this ssd with a phenom II x6, set windows to utilize all cores and all memory on start up. The machine boots (more like a flash) to the desktop will all the drivers and driver managers loaded in about 3.5 seconds after the bios post.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good value for the money. After a years use and writing about about 4TB till date, the drive still performs great. SMART wear level count shows 95% health so I expect it to last much longer.

Cons: *Write speeds are low, which don't matter much in a general everyday use.
* I EVO drive fixes the write speed issue with some SLC tricks

3 out of 5 eggsDead after 1 year

Pros: Fast, inexpensive.

Cons: Dead after one year.

Other Thoughts: Surprised that an SSD dies so quickly. Especially compared to regular drives that I have owned for years. Good news is that it has a 3 year manufacturer warranty. Gave them a call and they readily replaced the drive. Bad new is that I lost some data.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: I've owned it for a year and a half now and its still kicking in high gear at the stated speeds and recently i removed it from my pc and added it to an old aging Dell Inspiron 1525 (BIOS A17) to breathe new life into and at first while installing it into the laptop, i got frustrated thinking that the ssd drive might have not been compatible because when i tried to boot it, it would say "No bootable devises--strike F1 to retry to boot, F2 for setup utility, Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics." and i try all those keys and no luck. finally after few hours i figured out that the problem was the the ssd was too thin that it wasn't being seated into the sata port correctly. it is highly recommended that you get a bumper ( most new ssds come with it now) to place beneath or above to fill in the void that normal 2.5 hard drives make. I had a bumper lying around from another ssd and i placed the drive in and it seated correctly and was detected immediately upon booting up. If you dont have a bumper, find something to prop up the drive

I read about the Samsung ssds and marvel controllers being incompatible on other forums but it think now (2014) all of that has been corrected

would have saved me alot of time if i had this to read so i write this for others

Cons: none

2 out of 5 eggsSSD Failed

Pros: The drive was very fast. Windows 7 load times dropped to around 15-20 seconds. If you are coming from a HDD, it will feel like a brand new computer. Substantial read/write speeds were also enjoyed.

Cons: Purchased 5/31/2013, failed 7/16/2014. My computer started a continuous bluescreen/restart loop, with the error coming on a driver that is typically associated with hardware changes. I can't confirm, but a Windows Update may have taken place that somehow effected the drive.

After booting off a different disk, windows was no longer recognizing the drive or format. I was able to recover my data using opensource software, thankfully.

Other Thoughts: I enjoyed it while it lasted. The only option Samsung is giving me is a RMA, so I will follow through with that process and see how much longer the next one lasts. Back up your data! I *should* give it one star, you can thank the sheer speed for that extra egg.
