4 out of 5 eggsTime for SSD's in your server

This review is from: SAMSUNG 845DC EVO MZ-7GE960EW 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Enterprise Solid State Drive

Pros: Fast drives, none DOA, price when compared to other enterprise/server SSD's, works with existing SAS/SATA controller in server.

Cons: Lower rated write endurance than some other drives. Took off an egg for this, but time will tell if it was even a factor.

Other Thoughts: Installed 6 of these (from another vendor) in a server with an LSI 9260-8i controller card with FastPath enabled. Set up a RAID 10 array and started restoring data from Veeam backups of our vSphere environment. Booted up restored VM's and everything has been running smoothly for the past few weeks.

Here's a basic rundown of some performance metrics from running SQLIO using a 1 GB test data file and taking an average of 8, 64, 128, and 256 kb block sizes on the system before (with 8 x 450 GB 10k SAS drives) and after:

Sequential Read:
5,762 IOPS - 280.84 MB/Sec - Max Lat 292 - Avg Lat 4
Random Read:
978 IOPS - 65.83 MB/Sec - Max Lat 969 - Avg Lat 21
Sequential Write:
2,856 IOPS - 191.93 MB/Sec - Max Lat 204 - Avg Lat 7
Random Write:
1,200 IOPS - 56.93 MB/Sec - Max Lat 554 - Avg Lat 26

Sequential Read:
20,461 IOPS - 1,013.29 MB/Sec - Max Lat 43 - Avg Lat 1
Random Read:
20,425 IOPS - 997.28 MB/Sec - Max Lat 54 - Avg Lat 1
Sequential Write:
19,630 IOPS - 978.27 MB/Sec - Max Lat 25 - Avg Lat 1
Random Write:
21,087 IOPS - 989.78 MB/Sec - Max Lat 12 - Avg Lat 1

So, much improved performance (MB/s), much more consistent latency, theoretically lower energy consumption, and no spinning disk! In the random tests, getting a 1,400% to 1,600% increase in speed is amazing!

We'll see how these hold up long term, but we like the results so far. I think the cost over 15k SAS drives (not an option in this case as we needed in excess of 450 GB drives and 2.5" form factor) would be marginal.

If you are looking at buying a server and need internal storage, or have a NAS or SAN device that supports SATA 2.5" drives, you should really look at these as a viable alternative to 10-15k SAS drives. Just remember, you should test workload before buying SSD's. If you have high % or size load in writes, you will be better served by looking at another SSD like the 845DC PRO to meet your needs.

Only downside we have noticed is that the users connected to this server quickly adjusted to the new speed as "normal" and no longer perceive a speed difference. I, however, notice that I can reboot a WS2008R2 machine in about 30 seconds. That's pretty impressive to me considering it was about 2.5 minutes before.
