4 out of 5 eggsNice Product Small Space

This review is from: Intel 525 Series Lincoln Crest SSDMCEAC060B301 mSATA 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Super Fast, Small Size, Makes Perfect Test Drive

Cons: 60gb is not enough for win 7.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for my custom built computer thought that it would be enough for windows 7 and then some ended up replacing it because their was not enough space. For a computer I was testing I used this drive added windows 7 onto it fully updated and then 4 basic programs Java,Adobe reader,Adobe Flash, microsoft Security Essentials, Their was 32 gb left.

5 out of 5 eggsTeeny tiny form factor hard drive

This review is from: Intel 525 Series Lincoln Crest SSDMCEAC060B301 mSATA 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Small. Real small! Tiny in fact. And fast, 7.9 in the Windows hard drive rating. Perfect system drive, takes up no space in your case. Fantastic.

Cons: High GB/$ compared to other SSD drives.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate on prior review

This review is from: Intel 525 Series Lincoln Crest SSDMCEAC060B301 mSATA 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The Intel SSD works well. It requires no special drivers.
My first SSD was replaced by Intel after I reported that it overheated. The Intel support was first rate.

Cons: There is nothing bad to say about the Intel SSD. However, be aware that there can be install/recognition problems with some ultrabooks. My HP Spectre XT would not boot from the Intel 525. It took a recent BIOS update (and no help from HP Support) to finally reslove this issue.
Be aware also that this SSD heats up more than others under intense usage (example: cloning 40GB operating system/software). Good ventilation is needed, but the temperature drops quickly at the end of an intense operation and there is no problem at all in normal use.
As for any needed mSATA-to-SATA needed to put the 525 into a 2.5 laptop setting, or USB external for cloning op system, the Intel SSD does not have any problem. It works like any other drive with standard drivers. My Startech hardware worked well, although I do think that the enclosure needs some holes to help dissipate built-up heat.

Other Thoughts: Intel will be the force in newer, faster technologies. The 525 is a leading-edge product. The warranty is great with Intel support/knowledge behind it. Despite my problems getting it to work in my ultrabook - no fault of Intel - I'm glad I bought this SSD. Why did the first SSD run so hot? Don't know, but Intel resolved the issue.

1 out of 5 eggsSome Like It Hot

This review is from: Intel 525 Series Lincoln Crest SSDMCEAC060B301 mSATA 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: So far it works - but only in the right conditions.
As promised by Intel, the drive functions like any other SATA drive. Externally connected, it was immediately and without any problem recognized by both a laptop and an ultrabook, both Win 7. However, that's when the problems started.

The drive was unstable in all tasks (low-level format/safe erase, copying files, cloning, etc.) After being connected for a while, the drive "disappeared" on the host computer.
The SSD was mounted in a StarTech mSATA to SATA converter/enclosure - then connected to the host computers via my reliable USB 2.5" external enclosure. I gave up and was ready to send back the drive as defective.

When removing the StarTech from the USB ext. enclosure, I felt a lot of heat and decided to do a few more tests. Leaving the SSD mounted to the StarTech mSATA to SATA circuit board and that to the USB enclosure's circuit board) everything worked well - but only when everything was left completely open! I.e. - all circuits unmounted and open to the surrounding air. (If you ever do this, be careful!!) Everything seemed to work OK; no failures.

So I drilled holes in the StarTech enclosure to allow air flow - voiding the warranty, I'm, certain - then put the StarTech enclosure back together, converter board and SSD inside. With the USB circuit board still open to the air and the StarTech enclosure NOT inside the USB ext. enclosure, the Intel SSD / StarTech still got very HOT and failed as before.

I will try again to run tests with everything 100% open, but even if everything again works well, I'm still left without a way to get this thing (Intel SSD and StarTech converter/enclosure) mounted into my laptop as a replacement for my operating system HDD. I also won't be able to rely on the Intel SSD as a backup SSD if my ultrabook SSD ever fails.

Cons: Seems that some people have reported that these Intel 520/525 SSd's have heating problems.

Another negative: don't count on Intel Tools. This drive from Newegg is NOT a retail product. The Intel Drive software downloaded from the Intel site did not recognize the Intel SSD when connected by the USB enclosure. The Intel Migration software (Acronis bare-bones, also downloaded from the Intel site) actually says that it works with the Intel USB cable - otherwise you may be out of luck like me.

My usual USB external enclosure and my EaseUS disk software have worked 100% with many other disks and many other tasks in the past. In fact, with the Intel SSD and all the circuit boards exposed to the open air, both my USB enclosure and software still were able to complete the necessary tasks. So it seems that heat build-up is the problem.

Other Thoughts: I'm hoping that somehow an Intel support person picks up on this with an answer. Otherwise, I'll have to say that the failure for the Intel Drive to operate in any kind of normal condition is makes it defective. Newegg has a 30-day return/replace policy - maybe the next one will work better??
