4 out of 5 eggsMakes my IBM T42 S M O K E!!!

Pros: Well made product with a solid warranty. Uses SLC chips. Super fast drive. Just enough room to load Windows XP.

Cons: The size vs. price. Transcends website could bring more to the table as far as support. All the information that I got to tweak the drive was gained from using google. Out of the box the drive is okay, but with about 6 tweaks it smokes. Nowhere on the Transcend website does it provide help in this area.

Other Thoughts: If you were toying around with the idea of purchasing a used T-series IBM laptop, and putting an SSD drive in it...this drive is a perfect match. I have to say that I am amazed at how well my T42 with an upgraded 2ghz Pentium M CPU, and 2 gb of memory operates. If I didn't know any better, I could swear I was using a newer laptop with more impressive specs, i.e. dual core, faster memory, etc...Definitely makes this old machine smoke, and well worth it in my opinion. The T42 is a great laptop, and with this SSD, it really is pleasure to use. In addition, I purchased a SATA HDD caddy for the hot swappable drive, and dropped in a 320gb 7200rpm 16mb cache Seagate HDD. Let me tell you, this setup works like a charm...

4 out of 5 eggspricey but

Pros: Breathed new life into an old Dell lap top with pata interface. Absolutely love it.

Cons: Price vs capacity.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars.

Other Thoughts: Has sure perked my interest in upgrading my Tower to a PCI-e SSD.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks well but...

Pros: SLC
Reputable manufacturer
High quality
Web support--not that I needed any
Makes XP fly and do tricks, no configuration required

Cons: Small
Expensive for only 8 gigs
Newegg Shipping

Other Thoughts: I could have bought another brand and wait for it to come from China but I thought--pay a little more and Newegg will deliver in days. Err try weeks! Ground shipping from Los Angeles? Are you kidding? It took 5 whole days to get to Seattle. Then the border. Then Vancouver to Toronto on some truck took another 5 days. Then local delivery with stops in between for donuts. I will be receiving another SSD from a supplier here in the Canadian wilderness and its out for delivery here after only two days. Paid way less too! C'mon Newegg, you make China look good!

5 out of 5 eggsRecommended

Pros: Bought 2. Both used in an automotive environment in trucks that torture them with temperature, vibration and the like. Both have performed flawlessly since day one. These are SLC type flash, which is better then MLC from what I read.

Cons: Capacity / $ ratio.

Other Thoughts: Running XP embedded on both.

4 out of 5 eggs2nd try, so far, so good

Pros: My first one was DOA, but Newegg RMA'd it fast. 2nd one is now installed in a Smoothwall firewall and is so far working very quietly.

Cons: 1st one was DOA.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA or Incompatable

Pros: None yet.

Cons: Removed 30GB Toshiba 2.5” drive from Satellite Pro 6000, replaced with TS8GSSD25-S and rebooted. Machine hung on boot menu; device boot list did not have new SSD HD listed. Followed all manufacturer’s installation instructions – removed battery, wore static wrist strap, etc – and even swapped out SSD with another 30GB 2.5” HD from a different Satellite Pro 6000; same results.

Visited Transcends website and it was pretty bleak. Posters with SSD issues would not get responses from tech support. Further, the problem with SSD’s not being recognized by older laptops seems chronic.

RMA’ed this one and will try another. For those of you considering this product make sure to check out the support website first.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great to have a drop-in SSD replacement for PATA laptop hard drives. Fast. Much less time waiting for disk I/O.

Cons: Only 8GB of space, and expensive for that.

Other Thoughts: Installed in an old Pentium III-M Thinkpad. It now boots Windows XP to the desktop in 7-8 seconds. I used nLite to optimize the XP install and I would recommend this if using XP.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for old Thinkpad R50

Pros: Fast, quiet. Installed XP on my Thinkpad R50. Now fastest amount my other other Thinkpads T60 and T61.

Cons: No enough storage. Expensive!

Other Thoughts: Should have gotten the 16GB instead.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade for old Dell laptop

Pros: I have an old Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop which is my daughter's play computer. It has thrashed its original Hitachi Travelstar 60GB HDD and an identical replacement. I suspect the laptop might get somewhat too hot, plus the girl tends to be a little rough with the machine (slams the clamshell, shuts down by just powering off). I thought about solid state as a more impact-tolerant, high-temp-tolerant alternative.

Drive installed in less than a minute. Formatted in 20 secs, full format NTFS. Installed XP Pro flawlessly in 25 minutes. Took up 4.3GB after SP3 + security updates, typical install, leaving me about 3.4 GB for apps.

Machine now boots VERY FAST, performs spritely. Like many reviewers of the MLC Transcend drives attest, this is a great way way to breathe life into an old rig. Works faster than ever. We shall see if it is more durable.

One of only a few PATA SLC drives out there.

Cons: Small size for price, even smaller size for SLC memory.

Other Thoughts: Read AnandTech about incredibly slow random write performance for MLC drives and system "stuttering" when multiple i/o requests hit any MLC drive with JMicron controller and Samsumg memory. For this reason, I went with the SLC drive. I don't have time to fool around with incomplete installs and a laggy machine.

Apparently JMicron may have resolved this issue as of late Jan 2009, but I bought an SLC SSD for problem-free fast performance on the OS drive, and that's what I've got.
