5 out of 5 eggsStill Running 2 Years Later

Pros: This drive has seen and done it all. I've had this drive for about two years now and still running strong on the original drive. Works well with my Xbox 360 and great for my backup needs. I got this drive when it first hit the shelves. I've had no issues with it dying at all. And since I move large files I always defrag and chkdsk the drive to make sure it stays in top condition.

Cons: The lights are cool, for about 20 minutes. I would have preferred something more low-key than the flashing blue but the drive works well so I'm just being nitpicky.

Other Thoughts: After two years I decided to see what was inside so I broke the seal and hopped inside. Inside mine contained a Western Digital WD5000AAKB with IDE interface to a chipset converting it to USB. The inside was clean and looked easy to remove and replace so I also tried out another WD drive and a Maxtor drive that I had laying around from my IDE days. The two 80GB's plugged in and were recognized by my Windows and my Archlinux setup. I'm going to keep the case even if the Western Digital 500GB drive it came with dies out because the case itself seems to allow use of any IDE drive. Just a thought.

5 out of 5 eggsLike mine so far

Pros: Quiet, cool, fast. Spins down when not in use.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I've seen a lot of reviews of this drive failing. Mine's been great so far, but have only had it about 6 months. I'll write an update if it does go bad, though. My other 2.5" SimpleTech has been fine, too. Maybe there was a bad batch of disks, or maybe I've just been lucky so far. Remember to backup regularly either way!

1 out of 5 eggsChanged my mind

Pros: It was good while it lasted.

Cons: It completely stopped working on me all of a sudden. It won't spin at all. The little blue lights on top flash for a second, then it just makes a funny noise like the heads are trying to move, but the drive isn't spinning.
I tried contacting SimpleTech, but it seems my email from their web form has been forgotten... I guess I'll return it and get my money back.

Other Thoughts: If you get this drive, make sure you back everything up. I know any drive can fail, but this one seems to fail more often than others.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Quiet Drive

Pros: Quiet sleek drive that doesn't heat up too bad. It sees constant use, with no delays.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It has blinking blue running lights on top that some find annoying, it really doesn't bother me, but just be aware that it never stops blinking when in use.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Its looks nice...thats about it

Cons: blew on me after the first 4 days of ownership, I left it on those 4 days but to me that shouldn't be a problem.

Other Thoughts: don't waste your money

Manufacturer Response:

SimpleTech appreciates your business. We are very surprised that our drive blew on you after 4 days seeing that we have sold millions and the DOA/and warranty replacement for this drive is less than 1/2 percent. Our Technical Support Department will be more than happy to replace your defective drive with a new drive without question. Our toll free number is 877-486-1555 X7791.

Thank you for chosing SimpleTech.

5 out of 5 eggsNo issues yet

Pros: Use to back up 5 websites on local server for editing before publication to www. No issues yet. Does not make noises, good price. I have used it very heavily for 9 months and don't have any sign of any problems. I do have a ups on it so power issues do not cause it to have any glitches such as dips and surges.

Cons: That d$%^%$ blue light that chases around the case side. It always seems to pulse when I am not expecting it and startles me. Solved by putting electrical tape over most of it

Other Thoughts: This is my 6th Simple tech- use them in home based business as well as office business. There it see constant hits from a plant wide db. I have no issues with them. Mine has traveled the SOuth East with me and has not faulted even when tossed by airport security.

1 out of 5 eggsSimpleTech Simple Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Unit died after 8 months; SimpleTech will replace unit but you lose all your data; They say take it to certified data recovery place if you want to get your data. Quote came back at $815. Warranty is void if you open case; Did not want to pay $815 for data recovery so I opened the case hoping the hard drive was still intact and I could put it in desktop unit and extract data. Hard drive was shot and now I have voided the warranty. Thought maybe hard drive manufacturer (Hitachi) would stand behind hard drive but they say take it back to the origional purchaser. I guess I got burned.

Manufacturer Response:

SimpleTech apologizes for any problems you may have experienced while using our drive. You are correct in saying that SimpleTech will replace the drive; however, we will NOT ordinarily void the warranty just for popping open the enclosure. The only instance where the warranty may be voided is when there is obvious serious damage done to the drive. You mentioned in your statement that you "opened the case hoping the hard drive was still intact." If the drive just simply failed due to normal everyday use then the drive should have been in tact and no data ordinarily, would have been lost.

SimpleTech Technical Support will be more than happy to discuss your situation in greater detail. We can be reached at 877-486-1555 X7791.

Thank you for choosing SimpleTech and we appreciate your business.
