2 out of 5 eggsGood idea, mediocre product

Pros: Seemed to be a very good solution: flexible raid, reasonable price, fairly easy setup, eSAta option

Cons: Trying to recover data from corrupt file system as I write this. Actually, I've been wary of this product since I purchased it nearly a year ago. As others have stated, cheap construction (looks nice in the pictures though, doesn't it). The cooling fans on my units (I own 2) are also noisier than they should be, and given how hot the boxes feel after a few hours, are also fairly ineffective.

Other Thoughts: When the warranty runs out, I'm tearing these things apart & putting in better fans.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap case, good guts

Pros: Quiet, with a fast, reliable RAID 0 controller and fast, reliable hard drives inside.

Cons: The cases are one step above paper mache. Just holding one in your hand makes you realize the fragility of the thing. Also the sides, which look to be vents, are actually just a decorative grid pattern. The first one I received was fine until I tried to move the teeny tiny little switch on the back from RAID 0 to RAID 1. Trust me, I was gentle with it, but the switch snapped off and disappeared into the case never to be found again.

Other Thoughts: I have not had any problems with the RMA replacement. I also haven't touched it since I set it up. I also avoid sneezing when I'm in the same room for fear it might shatter. That being said, in RAID 0, the Duo Pro is noticeably faster than my much more, expensive all-aluminum, LCD monitored, Sans Digital Raid box with smaller, supposedly faster drives.

4 out of 5 eggsThis Drive Has Improved!

Pros: The Price! (1TB Pro Duo is $169 at globalcomputer.com) High Speed 3G eSATA interface. Raid 0 and Raid 1 and both are easy to implement. USB 2.0 interface also included. Unit runs very quiet.

Cons: No Firewire interface. Case is lightweight plastic and carries alot of weight so care must be taken when moving around not to bang it too hard (shouldn't bang around any hard drive :))

Other Thoughts: For the $169 price, I don't think you can find a better unit anywhere. While there are better units available, they will cost you at least twice as much if not more. The manufacture gives a 3 year warrenty as well so I feel good about my purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Feature set is good.

Cons: Unfortunately device was DOA. Not sure how much stock to put in the manufacturer's response about improving as my device was exactly as the other's warn about. System was damaged upon arrival. When taking it out of the packaging little pieces of plastic fell out. Drive connections were popped out of their casing and did not align up with precut access portals. Was able to shimmy connections back in their port however drive would not power up at all when connected to power.

1 out of 5 eggsSucks!! Real Real Bad!!

Pros: Cheap External Drive that promises to offer RAID 1

Cons: But the Promise to offer reliable RAID 1 is not well kept.

Very cheap plastic. Got 2 from elsewhere (not newegg), both did not work. One had hardisk errors and other case was broken.

Not a reliable RAID. The RAID controller in this is also somewhat iffy.

I am saving my money for something better!!

Manufacturer Response:

SimpleTech takes quality control very seriously and we have done much to fix the issues described in this review. We have reinforced our retail packaging as well as our hard drive enclosure with additional fasteners inside. We have also added thickness to the entire case. Although new products should not exhibit these traits, any customers who encounter similar problems are urged to call SimpleTech Technical Support for a replacement

2 out of 5 eggsFlimsy, flimsy, flimsy

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Cheap. To say the case is flimsy is an understatement.

Other Thoughts: This might be a good drive if it survives shipping...

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great - invest in eSata interface

Pros: Good form factor. Stays cool and is not noisy at all.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: If you want to set it up for mirroring (500Gb) instead of striping (1Tb), it's not immediately obvious how.

Works better with an eSata connection. I got a cable and interface (Rosewill) from NewEgg for about $30. It tripled my throughput.

2 out of 5 eggsBroekn pieces so who cares if it works?

Pros: Raid 1, eSATA plus USB, small footprint.

Cons: Cheap Plastic case which arrives broken. As stated by the other two reviewers the units arrive broken. Hard to tell exactly what is broken inside however from the shape of the peices falling out and the rattle inside I would say it is the mounting points for the Hard Drives.

Other Thoughts: Contacted Newegg as well as SimpleTech to see who will own up to shipping product which obviously can't survive shipping. This doesn't speak well for the long term use of these as a backup or portable solution. I was hoping these would be a great small business, single owner backup solution and with eSATA I could use this drive as a mirror RAID for My Docs and the business data or even a very large backup device for servers but if they can't survive shipping to me inside bubble wrap I know they won't last on a clients desk.
