5 out of 5 eggsExcellent deal!

Pros: Silent, High-performance 7200 RPM Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 drive inside, Small/light power adapter

Cons: USB 2.0 only, no eSata or Firewire 800 (not really a con but just saying...)

Other Thoughts: At the heart of the unit I got was the Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 drive which is one of the most efficient 1 TB drives on the market. The desing is simple, yet very elegant. It sports a manual power up/down switch in the back and enough vent holes to keep the unit cool.

Overall excellent value for the money.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Nearly silent, runs very cool, lots of space, still working great after 1 year

Cons: There's this energy saver mode build in that I can't seem to get rid of, so if you leave it on for a while it'll go to some kind of sleep mode and it'll take a few seconds to start up again when you use it. A very minor inconvenience

Other Thoughts: Had to format to NTFS before using, friend made the mistake of leaving it FAT32 and he couldn't store larger files on there

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value

Pros: Quiet, very much so. Once it is formatted NTFS, it blazes. Very sturdy case - really feels solid.

Cons: No fan. But don't be in idiot and expect to keep it running 24/7. Turn it off when you are not using it. Case is glued together (no screw heads anywhere), and there is no hope of replacing the drive inside if it burns out.

Other Thoughts: It is a sizeable case - a little larger than most external drives.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: USB 2.0, 1TB for a low price, works great with Mac and Airport Express/Time Machine

Cons: None as of yet

Other Thoughts: Got this drive as it was the lowest cost 1TB disk at the time, for use as a network share/Time Machine to supplement and backup my 120GB Macbook.. So far it's been a champ, after reformatting to HFS+... NOTE: it had free 3-day shipping, but as the distribution center was in NJ I ended up getting it the very next day! I <3 NewEgg..

1 out of 5 eggsNo Fan

Pros: Capacity

Cons: NO FAN.

Other Thoughts: It is irresponsible of ANY enclosure manufacturer to omit a method of cooling a hard drive. It was ok when the drives were small and didn't get hot enough to burn themselves up.

The industry has chosen "quietness" over "dependability" in the feature chart.

I can't tell you how many failed external drives have come into our service center in enclosures without fans. If you're lucky, only the controller for the enclosure is fried. But if you're typical, the drive itself has failed.

If you want a quiet external drive, buy one that has a temperature controlled fan. If you want a cheap external drive, get one with a huge noisy fan. :)

3 out of 5 eggsCheap Storage

Pros: 1TB for relatively cheap price.

Cons: Has some kind of built in low power mode that CANNOT be controlled. Very annoying when the unit goes into low power mode after some inactivity time.

Other Thoughts: Great drive, fast just wish I could turn off the power save feature.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: This hard drive has a huge amount of space. I've used it for a little over a week and it has not really shown any signs of trouble. The documentation is pretty organized and clear. This drive comes with Total Media Backup software on it, which you can choose to install or not. Overall, great drive.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: It works like it should. Also, do a quick format into NTFS when you get the drive.
