Features

Features
Superior reliability - Designed and manufactured to server-class standards to provide best-in-class enterprise reliability in high duty cycle environments. With 1.2 million hours MTBF at 100% duty cycle, these drives have the highest available reliability rating on a high-capacity drive.
Low power - Active Power Save delivers best-in-class seek mode power consumption through an advanced WD firmware which conserves power in active seek modes without degrading performance.
RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER) - A feature pioneered by WD, significantly reduces drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives.
Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) - Provides best-in-class vibration tolerance by optimizing operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multidrive systems such as rack-mounted servers or network storage.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Drives

Pros: worked while it worked...

Cons: Bought two of these drives, one for my server, one for my backup. Both died within the same week. Not enough time to have a new drive shipped and backed-up. Lost both server information and backup information. Not good. Both drives died within the warranty period.

3 out of 5 eggs50/50

Pros: fast, quiet

Cons: not so stable
I bought two of these for my server and one had consistent problems. It turned out the bulk of them were caused by bad firmware and updating got me an extra few months of life.
The flaky one eventually died and Western Digital sent me an RE3... that ones been chugging along with no problems ever since.

Other Thoughts: Keep your firmware up-to-date and if you have any issues Western Digital's support is a dream.

5 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: I was definitely looking forward to getting this harddrive. A Western Digital harddrive with 500 gb at 7200 rpm for 50 bucks? I thought it was a steal

Cons: DOA. Honestly nowdays I don't think it's anyone's fault except for UPS. You can find something on their site about how they may drop packages up to 9 feet during loading/transports. I can't imagine anything like that would be good for a harddrive.

Other Thoughts: 5 stars for the deal I was going to get, but its too bad such a nice drive couldn't come in working order. When I installed it into the computer the harddrive wasn't able responding and it made a consistent and loud clicking sound every 1-2 seconds. Its never a good thing to hear on the first boot.

1 out of 5 eggsI hope it's just a bad drive

Pros: inexpensive, good capacity, looks good all around

Cons: installed windows xp and all was looking good, until I restarted the system, and now it gets a disk read error. After trying to reinstall the OS and trying the HDD on different systems I've found that this one was just not going to take an OS. Put in a different HDD in the intended system and it took XP without a hitch

Other Thoughts: been weighing western digital vs seagate. And after continuing series of let downs from wd I'm going to just have to go all seagate.
Shipping was great, three day shipping got to me in two

4 out of 5 eggsNICE DRIVE

Pros: Pro's?.. Well its a Western Digital. Have had many drives from them not a single failure yet. would have given it a 5 but havent had it long enough. Runs my Linux machine (full vers SuSE 9.3) like a champ just like its 160gb predecessor

Cons: NO WHERE on the ad when I bought it did it say OEM (nor on the receipt) which means it shipped without box, cables, and manuals/disc...JUST the drive so went & got that from WD just wasnt expecting OEM is all... if thats my worst surprise I'm sure I'll be happy as always... GO NEWEGG!!

Other Thoughts: For anyone reading this that is new to newegg...buy with confidence..great products & prices & customer service. Havent been let down once in 4 years of dealing with them

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: 5 year warranty, nice balance of file transfer speed/temps/noise.

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: Using the WD5000YS w/o tler as a single drive for data/apps/page file with a WD360GD for the OS. The WD360GD is 4 years old with heavy usage and still going strong. Wanted another WD drive with similar reliability and warranty therefore the WD5000YS. HD arrived well protected/packaged.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drives

Pros: I have been using 4 of these drives in a NAS for about a year now. They have been working flawlessly. In a couple of years when I'm looking for a replacement NAS setup, I will probably buy whatever comparable product Western Digital is selling at that time.

Cons: None
