5 out of 5 eggsMac OS X Leopard

Pros: Got for Time Machine when Leopard comes out. Hooked up to 24'' Intel iMac thru Firewire 800. Faster than expected. Transferred 350GB very quickly with no problems. Quiet, runs cool, stylish. Sleeps automatically. Amazing external hard drive.

Cons: Nothing major. Came formatted FAT32 so had to format to Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). Clicking noise when sleeping or waking.

Other Thoughts: Just buy it. Totally worth it, especially for Leopard using Firewire 800.

2 out of 5 eggs1 Glaring Ommission

Pros: Triple Interface

Cons: Auto Power off does not work with FireWire

Other Thoughts: If I had known the Intelligent Drive Management does not shut the drive down when connected via FireWire, I would have just purchased a cheaper single interface USB drive. The drive's actual space is 465GB which I expected. Everything else is as expected but I feel like the Auto Power off working only with USB is something that should be indicated.

2 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted.

Pros: Fast, silent, and at a good price.

Cons: It worked fine for about three months. Then one day it just stopped working. It powers on and makes a repeated sound for like 30 seconds then is silent.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend using this only for a backup of your backup files. Since it broke for no reason. This is my 2nd Western Digital hard drive to break on me. I'll go with the Seagate for now on.

2 out of 5 eggsWas great... for a while

Pros: See previous listings.

Cons: Inconsistency. The main reason I moved away from the windows platform has now come back to plague me with my external hard drive. At times the drive will be fine, but in the middle (or at the start, or at the end) of a large (or small, or medium) file transfer the disk will just stop transferring and sit there for minutes and then resume. Sometimes it doesn't even resume and I have to perform a hard reboot because the finder froze up too and wouldn't restart.

Other Thoughts: I'm already on my second drive from WD, and now this one is starting to fail again also. I find it difficult to believe that I got two lemons in a row, but I guess it happens. Or maybe the drive just sucks. You decide.

2 out of 5 eggsWD My Book WDG1T5000 Pro

Pros: Relative ease of installation - initially. Moderately fast first time system backup. Fairly quiet drive noise level. Acceptable drive temperature while running.

Cons: WD informed owners of this drive that the IE 1394 cable provided with the drive was defective and could lead to damage of the drive or the host system. Advisory suggested immediate removal of faulty cable pending receipt of new cable from WD. Upon receipt of new cable the PC would not recognize the drive using the IE 1394 cable, and it could not access the drive using the USB 2 cable. Drive was replaced by WD, but the same problems persist. Likely cause is permanent damage to system motherboard.

Other Thoughts: I'm a lifelong user of WD drives and have always preferred and recommended them over other manufacturers products. I'm very disappointed with this drive and overall experience with WD --- the deployment of the hardware with a faulty cable and the slow response to the problem. WD Tech Support is inadequate for long-term issues since they provide only a 30 day window for free tech support. I'll probably be exploring other options for future external large drive deployments.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Portable drive

Pros: Very quiet. ran the drive nonstop for over 16 hours non stop transfering over 400G of information back and forth and it never heated up or made any sound

Cons: I bought the drive to use with my portable desktop. but it doesn't come with a 4 pin 1394b cable. I had to buy a 6 pin to 4 pin adapter cable after market

3 out of 5 eggsgood, but bad drivers

Pros: i like the design, fairly quite. like the light feature, but you can't really tell how much of the drive is being used. i like the rubber edges around the casing. temporarily spins down when not used for a period of time.

Cons: could be faster at starting up & turning off, but not a big thing, as long as it automatically turns off when PC turns off. gets a little warm-hot.

Other Thoughts: 1 BIG CON!!: worked great on PC2 [retail] using FWa. but when i built BPC1 and connected using FWa&b, it would not work/read the HD. kept getting a window saying that there are no firewire drivers to install/couldn't find the software. i downloaded FW drivers from the WD website, no success. tried calling WD with long wait times, didn't bother to stay connected cuz phone bill will be high. still waiting for a response from them about this through email... been waiting about a week now. apparently i can't have 2 firewire products installed at the same time with this product [as i read on other sites and reviews], but i had this product and another FWa product installed on PC2. hopefully i can get another HD to back this one up cuz it seems faulty, sometimes it can't be read on PC's when turning it on.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Has given me no problems what so ever. Firewire 800 is blinding fast and works well with my MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express. It came stock formated with FAT32 so Windows and OSX could use it, however I reformatted to HFS + so I can store my larger than 2GB video files on it. Amazing buy, I may have to buy another and daisey chain them together.

Cons: Retrospect back up software is kind of weak.

Other Thoughts: Buy it.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Decent

Pros: Very decent HD, I just bought this to store personal data and it runs quiet and smooth. I think the price is very cheap and valuable.

Cons: It was supposed to be a 500GB HD, to my surprisement it only had 465GB!

Other Thoughts: none.
