5 out of 5 eggsgreat reliable drive even for virtual machines

Pros: Reliable, Small size, no exteral power source needed, Fast for USB 2.0

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Very fast and reliable drive. I use this mainly for storage and backup, but have used it for VMWare Fusion virtual machines. I have this drive as well as the older 60gb model and have had no problems with either. If you are looking for file storage and backup this is a great drive. I love not having to plug it into the wall like the larger external drives. For virtual machines I would recommend a faster firewire 400 or 800 drive.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Software

Pros: Portable, works on macs and PCs, is hotswappable and does not require a power source other than through the USB connection.

Cons: The WD sync software is garbage. I purchased this primarily because I was interested in its syncing capabilities and no external power source. The software does not recognize new subfolders that have been added to currently "syncd" folders. Also, if one of the drives you sync is disconnected, the sync software will delete the files from the drive. This is poor design in my opinion.

Other Thoughts: Don't purchase for the sync capability. Buy only if you want to use as a drag and drop, plug and play device.

2 out of 5 eggsSudden death

Pros: Works flawlessly for a couple of months. Pretty blue light.

Cons: After 3 months, the pretty blue light is all that works. Drive is now dead.

Other Thoughts: I would spend more money to get something that lasts longer.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet deal

Pros: Received this drive free with a Canon Rebel XTI. Awesome!!! I have loaded several hundred pictures on it, and it could not be easier to use (just plug and play.) Plus the drive is small enough to put in my camera bag.

Cons: The short USB cord. Good thing I have plenty of extras...

5 out of 5 eggsgood overall, priced just right

Pros: Small, good enough capacity, no external power supply needed, works with 32bit linux. Pretty durable - I dropped this thing once and it still works fine.

Cons: As of now it seems that 64bit linux (ubuntu 7.10) does not work with this drive very well.

Other Thoughts: I would have gone with a larger capacity drive if they didn't need an external power supply but 60gig is good enough for now.

3 out of 5 eggsUSB Powered if your USB has the Power

Pros: Very small and sleek. Speed is acceptable for its size.

Cons: Is only powered via USB if your USB port provides enough power. Otherwise you must purchase a dual USB cord from WD to power it. This however did not solve my issue. Read other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Purchased to transport and view my Divx videos on my USB aux input DVD player. Since there is no aux power supply available for the drive and the DVD USB port is not powerful enough to power the drive, I'm out of luck. Also does not power via my 3 year old laptop.
