The Western Digital WD1600BEVS Scorpio series 160GB hard drive offers an outstanding combination of speed and low power consumption. Using a highly efficient motor that spins at 5400RPM while only using as much power as slower 4200RPM drives, it gives you faster seek times and longer batter life.

Reliability is enhanced by WD's ShockGuard™ technology that protects the moving parts of the drive surfaces from shocks and WD's DuraStep Ramp™ locks the heads in a secure position away from the disk to provide additional protection when the drive is not in use. These features combined with the rigid stainless steel top that can withstand 1.5 times the industry average make this one of the most durable drives in the industry.

The exclusive WhisperDrive with SoftSeek make this the quietest 2.5" drive, regardless of spin speed.

  • newegg SATA 1.5 Gb/s Interface The next-generation SATA interface supports up to 1.5 Gb/s data transfer rates and point-to-point connections to allow the Western Digital Scorpio WD1600BEVS to deliver optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Digital Scorpio drives to achieve industry-leading shock specifications.

5 out of 5 eggs8+ years and still running strong!!

Pros: I've been using this drive in my late 2006 HP built DV9000 mobile platform since 2006. To say that this HDD is a champ is an understatement. I have thrashed it silly with everything from high end games to incredibly intensive real time audio workloads with my DAW and it just keeeeeps on ticking (not in a bad way!). Also, I should note that it runs at a very solid 48-55 *C under workloads, and this laptop is definitely not a cool runner, so bonus points to WD for making this drive both hyper-stable and cool.

Cons: Two downsides:
1) Space. 160GB was a pretty normal amount back in 2006, but I find myself constantly moving data around to externall HDD's now to make room and keep the computer running tip-top instead of lagging it down with excessive data.

2) It's a 5,400 RPM drive. Even in 2006, there were 7.2K and 10K drives, but they were failing alot from sheer horsepower, so the 5,400 seemed like an OK compromise coming out of an age of 3200RPM drives. It still keeps up with very intensive workloads, but make no bones about it - it is nowhere near the light-speed performance of an SSD.

Other Thoughts: For a final thought, i'd like to add that I am a power user as far as generating very large files from audio work, and also push around a TON of assorted media files, and with that - I have NEVER had a Western Digital drive fail on me. The performance has always been stellar and super stable, perhaps at the cost of a little bit of speed. So if you are an office jocky or looking for just pure storage space that doesn't require near-instant or real-time processing (<10ms), then this is still a great (but old) drive. P.S. my DAW system latency is only 17Ms on this machine - that's super impressive considering i'm running an AMD Turion X2 64bit on Vista.

5 out of 5 eggs4, almost 5 years, pair going strong

Pros: * Very durable

I usually just kept them plugged in to my computer. Many computers have come and gone in the life span of these drives.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I bought a pair to use as external drives, but recently the case on one broke, so I put them in my new desktop build and installed an OS on each one. May use them in a RAID 0.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent replacements for OEM

Pros: -Good price
-Fast shipment
-Western Digital Warranty
-Great OEM replacement

Cons: -Occasional RMA

Other Thoughts: This will be the fourth drive I purchase to fix client laptop's with dead or failing hard drive. It has sufficient space for the average users and is pretty cheap and works just fine. I've had the occasional RMA with 1 or 2 but it ain't much a deal once you get used to sending RMA's and on top of that I've replaced 1 PATA drive of Western Digital through them directly and let me tell you it was the easiest fastest replacement I thought possible, probably second best next to NewEgg themselves! But of course I speak of my own experience.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after 13 months

Pros: Size for the price

Cons: Failed 13 months after installation on a Dell e1705. Moderate to low use only, always used in a well ventilated space. Drive was always characterized by periodic clicks louder than normal on any 2.5 laptop I'd ever owned. PC performance began to get erratic, but the rate of failure was slow enough that I was able to back up everything on the drive before it failed completely. Under warranty with WD, and WD has issued RMA for replacement unit.

Other Thoughts: Will pay $5.50 to ship unit back to WD for replacement. Not bad given that I was able to recover all the data before disk error prevented access. I hope the replacement lives up to the general reliability of the drive as indicated by other reviewers. Will post update if second unit acts up.

5 out of 5 eggsAttention Vaio Owners w/Vista 32 Bit OS's

Pros: Excellent replacement older Sony Vaio Laptop/Notebooks. The stock drive that comes with models from 2007 -2008 cannot stand the shock of the road. So if you are a "Road Warrior", this is the perfect solution.

Cons: Vaio DOES NOT come with recovery disks. If you get the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) from failure of the stock HDD and it is out of warranty, be prepared to pay for Sony for the 3 disk set + tax and shipping. Other manufacturers/vendors will send you the recovery discs and will charge for shipping only.

Other Thoughts: Easy installation and VERY quiet.

5 out of 5 eggsAs Expected

Pros: Have used this drive for about 18 months with flawless results. While I can't attest to its low power consumption giving longer battery life, I can honestly say it had no negative effect. It is quiet and most important, RELIABLE.

Cons: Price is much lower now than when I purchased it from Newegg. OK, not really a con.

Other Thoughts: If all you need is 160GB and are upgrading an older laptop with a pitifully small hard drive, like mine, this is definitely an excellent choice, especially at today's price.
