- Pros: Great drive for awhile on a Dell Inspriron 6000
- Cons: will not work on older Dell laptops
- Other Thoughts: Bought this drive to replace a 40gb on a friends laptop, the laptop work great for about 5 months then when she got up one morning and turned on laptop she just had a black screen with blinking cursor in top left hand corner, after doing some research i found that some dell laptops will not support drives higher the 80gb and dell does not support any undated bios drivers to fix this problem
Worked for a few months
- Pros: Newegg is great! I ordered the wrong connection type and they sent me the correct one, ino problem.
The 250GB drive installed and formatted fine and performed well, as expected for a few months. Very Quiet! It's great to be able to get a PATA drive with this capacity.
- Cons: The drive started clicking after a while, fortunately I was able to save the data files that I needed. Soon after it just clicked constantly and would not function.
Seems like there is a pretty high failure rate with this drive, according to reviews. Once you get past the initial 30 days warranty, you have to go through WD for RMA process.
- Other Thoughts: WD is sending me a replacement, fortunately they are sending me the 320GB in exchange, I hope it does not have any problems.
I went for the "Advanced RMA" so that I will have all of the packaging needed to ship the faulty drive back (at my cost). If the larger replacement drive works then the return shipping will have been worth it. Sure is a PITA having to set up a drive and having it fail but I do understand that drives do sometimes fail prematurely. As long as WD is willing to replace or especially upgrade my drive if it fails, then I can live with the hassle. I've never had a problem with WD drives in the past, hopefully this is the only exception.
Dies within 6 months
- Pros: Largest size drive for ATA 100.
- Cons: Dies within 6 months.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this drive for the size and to update an older laptop with an 80gb EIDE hard disk. It worked fine for about 4-5 months and then crashed. I tried to reformat it but partition magic reported the mbr and the rest of the space as BAD and couldn't do anything with it. I am not even going to bother to RMA it, I bought a 160GB Seagate instead which got better reviews for reliability.

Quiet - WD's exclusive WhisperDrive technology with SoftSeek algorithms make this the quietest 2.5-inch hard drive, regardless of spin speed. Reliable - WD's ShockGuard technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks. WD's DuraStep Ramp locks the heads in a secure position away from the disk to provide another layer of protection when the drive is not in use. Utilizing the most technologically advanced material available, the drive can perform a minimum of 600,000 load/unload cycles without contamination - up to twice the performance of its competitors. Rugged - WD Scorpio's rigid stainless steel top cover withstands more than 5 pounds of pressure - nearly 1.5 times the industry average - without pinching vital internal components. |
