Western Digital's My Book Essential is the latest evolution in their long history of back up devices. This 750GB drive has been outfitted with a USB 2.0 interface for high speed data transfers and near-universal compatibility. With the plug and play USB connection all you have to do is plug the drive in and it is ready to use.
A capacity gauge on the front panel lets you know how much room you have left on the drive. The rest of the housing is designed to vent heat away from the drive to keep it cool and save your data. The drive is Energy Star certified and turns itself on and off automatically with your system.

Perfect Performer
- Pros: I own 2 DJ Dance Clubs. After failures of other brands of HDs in computers I only use WD HDs. I bought this and 2 other WD my book HDs for music record/playback with 2 Denon DN-HS5500 Controllers. I went large capacity for full wav files, no MP3 compression, to get max audio fidelity. This drive works absolutely great! Not a single hiccup. I have ripped, transferred & played this drive on laptops, desktops, both macs & PCs, using firewire & USB. It's all good. newegg prices & delivery were great.
- Cons: Not the cheapest drive out there. But WD quality + firewire too. So it is a good value.
- Other Thoughts: In addition to the Premium Series 750 GB, I also bought 2 WD My Book Essential Series HDs from newegg to use with the Denon DN-HS5500 DJ controller, a 750 GB & a 1 TB. Both essential series HDs do not function properly with the the Denon DJ controllers. Same excessive file access failure both essential series HDs on both Denon DN-HS5500's. But both essential HDs test well on computer diagnostic programs, and both essential HDs perform OK on my macs and PCs. The problem is an incompatibility in the essential HD's USB control chip interfacing to the Denon music player. As noted above, the Premium HD's USB controller works perfectly with the Denon. I contacted tech support at WD & Denon, but neither would solve the problem. They both suggested using the Premium series drives that do work with the DN-HS5500 system.

- Pros: I actually own the 500GB version of this drive and it has been nothing but perfect since day one. Got it to replace an old failed drive after the terrible Maxtor I'd originally gotten to replace it proved faulty.

Glossy Case Shows Fingerprints
- Pros: Probably works OK.
- Cons: I have a 500 GB MY Book with the round green button and matte black finish with "feet" (felt bumpers) on one side. I thought I was getting the same case, but more storage. How disappointing to get the "new" shiny casing (slightly smaller in size) that attracts fingerprints, and looks extremely cheap and non-durable. The cool green circle button is replaced with no button and a slit of color. Ugly. Why "fix" something that isn't broken? I like consistency, and now my MY BOOKs look mismatched.
Excellent Backup Drive
- Pros: Because of the volume of digital pictures and video that I generate, I use an external drive to store this large volume of data and only keep current projects on my internal drive.
I decided to purchase this drive in order to backup my current external drive.
The Western Digital My Book Essential was quickly recognized by my computer running Windows 7. Because almost all of these drives are formatted with FAT32, I invested the time to reformat the drive with NTFS in order to better manage the large file sizes.
This drive is much more aesthetically pleasing than the Maxtor OneTouch drive that I am also using.
