5 out of 5 eggsRetail at a good price

Pros: I bought 6 of these drives. The reason is like the earlier reviewer stated...packaging. I had some problems with a few OEM drives I've purchased from NewEgg and Retail drives are shock-mounted from manufacturer to end extraneous helps your odds. 3 year warranty. $/Gig is good esp. considering it's retail. Free Sata cable as a bonus. No surface defects on format. Quiet, cool, quick.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: During a full simultaneous surface scan and format with three of these drives in adjacent bays they averaged 34°C. Not bad at all...and no defects. They are also very easy on the ears. They run about 3°C hotter than my SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB and are just as quiet. If there are ever deals that bring Retail drives close to OEM pricing for WD I would recommend highly going that direction.

5 out of 5 eggsWD drive

Pros: I have it in a Rosewill enclosure and haven't had any problems yet. It doesn't get too hot even if it's been running for awhile and having 700 gigs in one drive is very handy. I highly recommend this drive to anyone looking for a quality drive at a reasonable price. The warranty does seem to be 3 years instead of the one year listed in the specs here.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Molex to sata power converters are not included so order one with this if you need it. It's nice to see how well packaged it is for shipment and with the 3 year warranty and similar price I see no reason to order OEM.

5 out of 5 eggsOnce Again NewEgg is Wrong

Pros: Does not have a 1year warranty unless this drive was purchased before August 1st 2007. All drives purchased after August 1st 2007 have a 3 year warranty. That is direct from WD's website. Model: WD Caviar, WD Caviar SE, WD Caviar SE16 Series: BB, LB, JB, PB, JD, JS, KS, KD, KS, ABKS, AABS, AAJS, AAKS, AABB, AAJB, AVBS, AVJS, AVBB, AVJB Warranty 3-year - Effective for products purchased since August 1st, 2007. Drives purchased previously have 1 year warranty.

Cons: I love NewEgg but they really need to get their product descriptions right.

5 out of 5 eggsInitial Impression Very Good

Pros: Silent, cool, and hopefully reliable in the long-term. Each of the two I ordered passed initial tests upon installation, which including a surface scan for defects. Temperatures, according to "HD Tune," show 31' C idling in a stock HP xw4400 and a maximum of only 45' C when I had copied 500GB to one of them in a 62' F room (I prefer my house *cold*) and no forced air-flow on the drive as the cover was off the PC at the time.

Cons: As this is a *retail* package, it only has a one-year warranty vs. the three-year warranty of the identical *OEM* drive.

Other Thoughts: I chose a retail package simply because of the box: I believe OEM drives are shipped to NewEgg in bulk, whereupon their warehouse staff repackages the bare drive in a layer of bubble wrap and shoves them in another carton for shipment to the consumer. OTOH, retail drives are very well packaged (in the shock-absorbing trays) by the manufacturer; they stay in that packaging throughout the distribution channels all the way to me.

So if you, like me, don't trust that warehouse staff will handle your drives carefully, then I recommend you buy the retail package (in my youth I'd worked in a warehouse and at FedEx Ground; we mishandled your stuff as a matter of routine). Admittedly, though, I haven't had any problems with the dozen OEM drives I've bought in the last year for CCTV DVR repair.
