5 out of 5 eggs4.5 years and counting

Pros: This has been my primary drive for nearly 5 years and it has performed flawlessly. It's run in a crowded, hot case for much of it's run and I've formatted and reinstalled several times on multiple motherboards.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I had always wanted a 10000rpm drive since my days of browsing Micro Times in high school. It will be my last mechanical C drive and it's done it's job without any hiccups.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid like a rock

Pros: I've had this running in my primary desktop as my OS/game drive for over 4 years, and it's been great. It's fast and somewhat spacious.

Cons: 300Gb was a lot of space at the time, but a little constricting today when used as a game drive. Deleting old games is my workaround.

5 out of 5 eggsStill working greay

Pros: Still working great in a Win7-64 machine two years after purchase. Only thing faster is SSD.

Cons: Wish it was >300gb. Oh, well.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going after 3 years

Pros: First installed years ago in windows 7 machine. Pwr on to desktop in 35secs on fresh onstall. Old drive took a bit over a min

Cons: price/GB

Other Thoughts: SSD's are getting much more affordable these days. For less than what I paid for this (in 09) I can get an SSD of similar size.

5 out of 5 eggsSupa-Fly ! But clearly not for RAID unless...

Pros: Outstanding Performance, faster than some SSD's! The 2.5" form is great for many mounting options. Quiet!! Spinup sounds a bit like a tubrofan but quickly goes away, seeks are very subdued. Dependable! Spinning since 2008 with no failure or lost data. Two-platter design. lower seek times and less to go wrong.

Cons: Not a true 2.5" FF, unit height is a bit taller making mounting it into a silencer a bit of a challenge. Non-standard connector placement may affect some users.

Other Thoughts: Please, do the homework, WD makes a VelociRapter with firmware specifically tuned for RAID applications. The many failures you see are usually to do with a desktop drive collapsing from enterprise duty it was not designed for.

5 out of 5 eggsWD does it again.

Pros: Rather fast, sataII, RAID capable, 10k, its a RAPTOR BABY! 300gigs of it too! Cool heatsink design aswell, keeps a low temp for a 10K

Cons: Its only 300gb!, ill probably have to get another one eventually for RAID 0. Took a long time to format(whatever, dont they all)

Other Thoughts: Always buy from the egg!

5 out of 5 eggs3 months good so far

Pros: Bought this drive 12/16/08. No problems whatsoever. I can only hear the drive seeking when the side panel of my case is off.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I never bothered with the rebate.

5 out of 5 eggsRediculously fast, no RAID needed for home user

Pros: As mentioned, rediculously fast for a SATA drive. 122 MB/s (read and write were very similar speeds) when connected to onboard Marvell chipset (single disk), just a hair over 180 mb/s with two in a RAID zero. When connected to a hardware RAID adaptor, numbers were not increased significantly. Heavy IO operations are a breeze. I have yet to find a place where this HD doesn't perform like a champ. Runs very cool (much cooler than any maxtor I've ever had).

Cons: Newegg says I'm not supposed to discuss price... but the price has dropped 30 percent since the date of purchase less than 6 months ago. I suppose that's just how technology goes, but if I had it all to do over, I would have just looked for an upgrade from western digital (see other thoughts).

Other Thoughts: If you are a faithful WD buyer, you no doubt have a few of their older model disks around. WD has a customer loyalty program where by giving them the serial number of one of your older programs, they offer an 80 GB velociraptor drive for roughly the same amount of $/GB as the larger VR drive. If you have a couple of them around, I highly suggest upgrading to two of these for a RAID 0 (I said no need for the home user, not necessarily no want ;-) ).

SSD is not quite yet ready for prime time. Many of the SSDs on the market are not yet directly supported for use with large companies host bus adaptors or RAID controllers (plus the constant polling from RAID adaptors wears the SSDs thin quick in many cases). These velociraptors are the way to go for the foreseeable near future.
