RAID users keep eye on these
- Pros: These drives, as well as the 1GB models have low noise and good power savings mechanisms, and generally good price per MB ratio. Havn't had one fail yet, though all of them have been flagged for replacement by SMART after a few months.
- Cons: Be careful if you use these in RAID set ups. WD recommends against it, for good reason. The low power features of the drive make the R/W heads set very often, and within months the drive could be past the limit of load/unload cycles and start showing as old to SMART monitoring tools.
If you are set up to use SMART monitoring, keep an eye on your load cycles and you may see them rise ridiculously fast, especially in RAID environments.
There was a tool, wdidle or some such that WD gave out to some people who had to deal with this problem, that allowed you to tweak the amount of idle time before the drives set the head. Using it essentially cuts down on the load/unload cycles by not unloading in as short an idle time as they are made to do, undoing some of the green power technology's savings.
Sorry for the run on sentences toward the end there.

- Pros: QUIET. WD build reputation. Price compared to 2TB.
- Cons: None right now.
- Other Thoughts: I hate to give a piece of equipment a rating with such a short ownership, only 1 week. However, I threw this baby in a Directv DVR and for the week she works perfectly. Most dvr's come with drives made to handle 24/7 operations. This drive is not certified for 24/7 but as I said for 1 week she's perfect. Plus $299 for the bigger brother 2TB is way out of line. To the person who was expecting retail, shame on you. Thats why Newegg includes pics of exactly what you get....

Excellent Product
- Pros: Ordered two of these for media storage, transfer speeds are good at 50MB/s sometimes little more. Excellent price per GB.
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: I didn't set them use as raid but as single drive for storage. If I need more space, I will order more of these in the months to come.
- Pros: 1.5TB for a good price.
- Cons: WDTLER no longer works on these drives (I ordered 6 of them). WDIDLE still works fine. Don't buy these for RAID. I like Western Digital drives, but I'm not going to be suckered into spending extra cash on "raid" drives.
- Other Thoughts: For a single storage drive, this is a great choice.

- Pros: Great price. The drive just works - no problems.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: I've read other reviews that talked about the poor packaging of OEM drives from NewEgg recently. I experienced this a year ago. This time, my drive was wrapped very well in bubble wrap.
