5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, quiet, works great

Cons: None come to mind

Other Thoughts: If I recall correctly, the supplied USB cable was a bit shorter than I prefer. However, it does fit nicely in a laptop bag.

5 out of 5 eggsGot it cheap

Pros: Has worked perfectly as I needed to thus far. The WD software is easily avoided, and although there is some lost space, it's not enough to lose an egg.

Cons: Not really a con for me, but I wouldn't buy this at it's current price, as I got it for $59.99.

1 out of 5 eggsNot recommended

Pros: Nice design

Cons: Integrated WD software... can be removed but what use to put a software in a drive which everyone will delete. When I buy a portable drive I intend to buy a plug and play drive, that's it.
We never know when the drive will work, on a day it's working and on another it's not.
It ask to install the driver... what is the use of a portable drive if you have to install driver each time you connect it to a station. What if do not have the proper right to install the driver ? And anyway even you install the driver it just change nothing...

Other Thoughts: My first and last time I buy from WD.
I recommend not to buy this drive, if you intend to buy it, just look elsewhere, in a cereal box maybe.
I would have like to put half a egg for this.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works just fine. WD SmartWare can be disabled with a firmware update. After firmware is updated format with HP USB Storage Tool. What UDF partition?

Cons: It doesn't have a Diet Pepsi dispenser..

Other Thoughts: It took me 10 seconds to google WD SmartWare removal.

1 out of 5 eggs2 DOA in a row, I'm done.

Pros: Portability, sleek sexy finish.

Cons: First drive was DOA. Withheld doing a review, considering that it might be just one bad drive, these things happen. Second drive was DOA as well. No more RMA, going straight for refund.

Other Thoughts: Will end up costing me $20 in shipping for the RMAs. I am VERY dissatisfied. Hopefully will be able to get at least partially reimbursed by Newegg for that. I feel it is morally wrong for me to have to pay shipping fees to return faulty product.

3 out of 5 eggsFunctional but go with something else

Pros: It is a functional external hard drive. It does what it is supposed to do. If you need an external hard drive for incremental backups, the password protection and other tools it comes with would be very useful.

Cons: WD Smartware is installed on a Virtual CD drive that takes up 700 MB on the drive. This VCD cannot be removed, it can only be hidden. For some this may not be an issue. For me though it is a major negative to be unable to remove it. I paid for 500GB, I would really like to be able to use 500GB.

Other Thoughts: To be clear, my attempts to remove Smartware were conducted on Windows 7, and again on Ubuntu 10.10. Even with the power of Linux, I have yet to find a way to remove it.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: Honestly, I can't think of a single pro, aside from it works and my boss was happy to buy it for me for work.

Cons: - WD software/rootkit cannot be deleted from the drive.
- Microsoft Security Essentials actually identifies this drive to contain a worm, although; there is NOTHING on the drive.
- 465/500 GB usable.
- I will never buy a WD HDD, internal or external again in my entire life.
- Don't buy this for work, you'll be prompted to install unnecessary software on your machine everytime you plug it up to a different machine.

Other Thoughts: It boggles my mind that a product like this even exists on the market! Sorry WD, but you've lost my business, which will include a good 20-30(if you make it that long) years of working in IT and buying consumer based HDD!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Plugged it in and saw it as my passport. No installation of anything.

2 out of 5 eggsRootkit type "Bonus" Software

Pros: Small and fast. Shiny.

Cons: I would live with the missing drive space, but the files I put on at home, are not accessible when I get to school because I don't have admin rights to install the drivers. I'm not getting to the screen about installing the SmartWare. I've updated the firmware and SmartWare at home and can NOT get the Virtual CD software I downloaded from WD to find the drive to "hide" the software, even though I am running the software from that drive.

Other Thoughts: Nice little drive, IF you are not using on a "locked-down" computer. This drive is also a fingerprint magnet.

I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but I have been working on computers since '85. I have Google'd most of my day away trying to resolve, or better yet, REMOVE WD's rootkit to no avail. I am waiting for 1 last help request, and then returning this headache and getting an internal drive and putting it in a case. No more "Bonus" software.
