4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I have not had these drives long yet, so I cannot speak to long term reliability. The drives perform well in a four disk RAID 10 in a basic 1U server.

Cons: 2/4 disks arrived dead. One never spun up, the other started clicking after a few hours. This is pretty bad, but the situation was handled very well by Western Digital.

Other Thoughts: I held back on dropping a one egg review, and waited to see how WD would handle this. I figured 2 or 3 egg if they managed to quickly RMA the disks and get my on my way. But of course I was trepidatious about the 2 drives that so far were still working, as half the lot was DOA.

Western Digital handled this excellently, allowing my to advance RMA the drives that were as of yet completely operational because I did not feel confident in them. I wrote them that I did not want to exchange with Newegg because I would probably get more disks from the same lot, so they said there was no problem with me sending them two operational drives for replacements.

I am very happy with this level of service, and will be modifying my review in a few months dependent on reliability. However for now they get 4 eggs, because it is evident that WD will take care of not only problems with their products, but also the confidence of their customers.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive Locked Up After 2 Months

Pros: Great Paperweight

Cons: Had this drive in a small office server. After 2 months of use the drive locked up and failed to be recognized by the MB. Attempted various diagnostics, jumper settings, and differing MB setups in an attempt to get it to some working state to at least retrieve the data on it. But alas no such luck.

Spoke with WD and they do this annoying thing where they take your number and call you back 1-2 hours later and tell you that you have to RMA it.

1 out of 5 eggsNot so Pleased, WD.

Pros: The internal magnets work well on the refrigerator.

Cons: Failed in less than 24 hours. This was first venture into the RE-4 class drives, having owned 8 RE-3 series for several years. The Piezo second actuator, and stiffer mountings for the spindle and armature are simply marketing fodder for the unaware. The drive worked, at first, but stopped about 1/4 of the way through a 1TB backup. These are NOT quiet drives, especially when they start oscillating; apparently seeking. Windows reported a delayed write failure, followed by a complete hardware failure. My 2-year old Dell Precision workstation even refused to boot when it determined that there was a catastrophic failure on this drive. Another review, that offered 4 stars (for unknown reasons), stated that his/hers failed in 48 hours. Since RE-3 series are not available in greater than 1.0TB, it is time to re-think staying with WD, which has been my favorite for many years.
I would advise that you seek other solutions for storage >1TB. This is, of course, no fault of NewEgg.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg offered an immediate replacement/refund offer, so I would give them 5 stars, as usual. The quandary is that there is some potential data on the platters; cannot be sure, of course, so I will not take the risk of sharing sensitive source-code development with WD when/if they attempted to resurrect this drive. The drive has already has seen the drill-press, after spending 2.5 days trying to recover it. $180 wasted, first time on a WD drive, too.

4 out of 5 eggsWell made - RUNS HOT

Pros: Works as described with the exception of heat. With the features mentioned it should be highly reliable. (Piezo second actuator, and stiffer mountings for the spindle, and armature)

Cons: Cannot be passively cooled without a heatsink. I bought two of these for an open air enclosure (Thermaltake BlacX duet) and these drives quickly hit their maximum operable temperature of ~55 Celsius (~131 F). Even when not operating actively (Just being powered on) they are very warm. (18 C / 65 F ambient).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drives.

Pros: Untill now fast and reliable without any problems.

Cons: Sadly, my 5th one which was just in as a hotspare. Died of defect within 48hours. It cant be blamed on newegg as the noise its making isnt bad sectors. The actual board is making a electrical buzzing. Come on WDC, what happened with this one? I dont even see the blue drives with this problem and I sell upwards of 50+ a month.

Other Thoughts: Still one of the better drives. Im guessing if it works from day one its great. Im just glad it was my hotspare that crapped on me. Newegg and there new replacement works alot better than having to goto WDC to get me a refurb.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet, Cool

Pros: Quiet, large capacity, have used the RE drives with good success in the past. 64m cache is great. Would recommend.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I use two of these to backup 180gigs of data from a win 2008 server. Backup rate has increased. These sit on my desk, can not hear them (the RE2 were not as quiet) and are slightly warm to the touch (the RE2 were somewhat hot). I'm using the Vantec eSata external enclosures a great match.
