2 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

Pros: Was a big drive, and most important, it was a Western Digital Black Label with a 5 year warranty!

Cons: After a year in service, this drive weird-ed out, began seizing and I had to RMA it back to Western Digital.

Other Thoughts: I cannot praise Western Digital's Warranty Service highly enough! In many years of owning their black label drives with the 5 year warranty, I have only had to send two back, and this drive was one. WD very quickly handled my claim and replaced this 1.5 TB drive with a nice new 2TB WD2002FAEX! They even sent it via 2 Day UPS! Bravo Western Digital, my loyalty to you was well-placed and will always remain! Thanks!!

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

Pros: 1.5 TB drive.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Got 2 of these almost 2 years ago - one as the main HDD, the other to put in an external enclosure for a backup. No problems after 2 years of daily use.

5 out of 5 eggsvery good drive

Pros: I've used this drive as my boot device for nearly 2 years now, and I'm still impressed by the performance. It is efficient, consumes negligible power, is silent, and is very compact. Plus it is extremely durable when compared to a conventional platter HDD!

Cons: I wish I had a higher capacity model

Other Thoughts: If you're on the fence about upgrading to an SSD (for boot or other drives), just go for it. I did and I haven't looked back. I still use high-capacity drives for storage, but for OS and performance-sensitive applications (read: games) SSD is the way to go.

3 out of 5 eggsNot recommend for RAID1

Pros: They seem reliable and fast in a single-drive setup

Cons: I got 2 of these in March of 2011 and put them in an ASUS P7P55D-E motherboard and used the on-board RAID1. They trucked along for a few months, then my BIOS stated of a degraded RAID and 1 of the drives had failed. RMA'd the drive no problem and sent the bad one back in and RAID was back to Optimal. For another couple of months. Then the other drive went bad. RMA'd again, got another drive. Wasn't more than 3 weeks that a THIRD drive had failed. I RMA'd a third time but demanded that I be able to send my 4th and 5th drives back in for a full refund. Sure enough, 4th drive went bad, and they did give me a full refund on that drive. So now, I'm still using the 5th drive as a standalone data partition on a new system and it has been running just fine for probably 6 months now. Drives seem decent but not in a RAID 1. It's either the drives, or a really shoddy RAID controller on my ASUS board. I'm leaning towards the board, which is why I give 3 eggs here instead of 2.

Other Thoughts: I just had a bad experience with these. But WD support did hold up their end by at least giving me a refund on 1 of the drives. All together I had 4 drives fail in about 14 months. Definitely uncommon for WD drives. But I have been happy with the single drive being used for backup storage.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD

Pros: - Price
- Reliability
- Speed
- Transfer rates
- Noise level

Cons: -None

Other Thoughts: I have had this HDD for a while now and have to say these Caviar Blacks are my favorite series of hard drives I've owned. Get 100 MB/S Read in HD Tune Pro and 150 MB/S transfer going in between 2 Blacks in Windows. Very nice for the price, just felt they were really worth it. I have a 1 GB, 1.5 GB and 2 GB, all doing well after 1.5 years of heavy use.

1 out of 5 eggsMajor Disappointment

Pros: None

Cons: Drive had bad sectors and failed less than a year after purchase. Western Digital replaced the drive with a refurbished drive which also had bad sectors. Attempted to return the second defective drive with RMA over a month ago which has been ignored by WD.

Other Thoughts: I'm very disappointed that Western Digital has outsourced their customer support, which used to be very friendly, are now incompetent/rude.

1 out of 5 eggsFailing after 1 year

Pros: Fast. Reasonable price when purchased (though they're very expensive now).

Cons: It's failing and it hasn't even been used that heavily, and has been in an extremely cool running environment. This is unacceptable, and from what I can gather I am just one of very many people who've had issues with these 1.5TB black drives. Each time I've tried contacting WD I get no response. What happened to this company?

Other Thoughts: Honestly, unless Western Digital contacts me to try and make good on this with a NEW drive (what I paid for); I'm done. I'll simply switch to another company and inform my readers/viewers to do the same.

Cons: Started going south a year after purchase, eventually failed completely. Won't even power on. RMA in progress.
