Does this product have its own power source?

Yes, it comes with a "wall wart" power supply. In other words, a giant plug.

I have used these WD external drives for years. I love them.

Be smart though, get at least two. You need all of your data backed up to multiple drives, in more than one physical location. I love these drives for that!

Question 2

How do I safely remove My Book from my computer, it continues to tell me something else is still using My Book, and it cannot eject until it is closed. Please help?

The annoying message appears if you attempt to remove or shutdown the drive for a period after accessing it.   If you have completed whatever you are doing with the drive and it is idle you can safely remove regardless of the warning or as I do let it sit for an hour or so and then remove.  At that point the message should not appear.

If I only have a usb 2 on my computer can I  use this external hard drive?

Yes, but it will run at the speed of the computer connection.  So if you only have a 2.0 USB port that is the speed it will run at.

As a general rule, new external hard drives tend to be universally compatible.

my windows 8.1 machine and others "find" the ESSENTIAL driver but says driver is missing. the wd drive does not seem to contain the software that should load from the drive to the machine automatically on power up. the driver has never been used, because no machine has ever loaded the software from the drive.

what can i do to "salvage" this drive? my computer identifies it as a model 1130.

This drive doesn't require any special software/driver to work with windows.  try reformatting the drive via My Computer or Manage Storage Devices.  If you still cannot use the drive, try it on another computer.  If it is still not functioning you may want to ask newegg for an exchange for defective device.

it comes with its own, weirdly shaped cord.  It is sort of short too.  My husband had to put something behind the tv so the thing could be plugged in without hanging.
