5 out of 5 eggsBulletproof

Pros: I bought my first Raptor in 2003. I'm still using it.

Ever since, I've put a Raptor, now marketed as Velociraptor, in every system I've built.

What makes these new models different?

They use 2.5" platters. That is important, as a smaller platter reduces the length of arc inside the unit, allowing the hard drive to seek faster, with less movement.

The fact that they are now cramming so much space in these things is important, as it allows data storage drives to keep up with the rest of a modern machine.

You no longer have to suffer slow storage performance if you boot from an SSD. Games and frequently used files can be loaded on the Raptor and you'll be fine.

These things are nearly bulletproof. As noted, I've got one that's been used for neigh on a decade, and it's still ready to go, with no errors under testing.

Cons: I cannot speak ill of this product line.

Other Thoughts: One of the nice things about these drives is the heat sink in which they are mounted. You don't have to worry too much about cooling.

I frequently remove hard drive cages in computers to increase airflow, and relocate hard drives to less restrictive areas of the case.

Despite their blazing speed, these drives can handle being mounted without direct fan airflow.

If you don't want to mess about with SSDs, or you are looking for a data storage drive that can keep up with your system, look no further.

With a Raptor, you've got a fast drive that will last the life of your system.

I ought to know. I bought the first one on the market, it still works, and I'm still buying them to this day.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome little drive!

Pros: - This drive is QUICK for not being an SSD.
- Doesn't get hot at all. I have a tiny OEM case fan on it and it's at 27C.

Using this as my main boot drive, but soon to upgrade to SSD.
Also had one before and it was great, until my rig was stolen.
I have 12,561 Power-On Hours (and counting!).

Cons: Price.

Pros: fast. quiet. cool. put one of these along side a 120gb boot ssd and 2 old 150gb velociraptors.

Cons: non so far

Other Thoughts: i have have 2 older 150gb raptors that i put in my new pc build. compared to this drive they are hotter under load and idle. also much quieter.

3 out of 5 eggsNot What I Expected

Pros: Easy install and a nice, blue SATA Cable. Nice intergration into my system. Loaded Windows 7 in 20 minutes start to finish...

Cons: First, like other reviews, the box came open but the static bag was sealed. Even though I had a fast install, the Windows Experience Subscore was only 5.9. Thought it should have been maxed out since this is touted to be the fastest drive on the market...

Other Thoughts: Save a few bucks and go for the WD Caviar Black...

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Screaming fast, the majority of Skyrim loading screens are over so fast I can't read the text on them. Didn't have any problems with installation, so far so good.

Cons: None so far, works like a charm

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a good Hard Drive

Pros: This drive does what I expected it to do. The installation was easy once I figured out what file format to use. I have two 160GB Western digital 10K RPM drives in a RAID 0 format already in my computer. I wanted this 600GB to serve as a storage drive. I installed the drive, plugged it in, selected the format and the drive was ready for use in less than 30 seconds.

Cons: So far so good. No trouble at all since installation of the drive on September 23, 2011

Other Thoughts: I got this on newegg for 229 and it is currently listed for 329. I guess you have to watch for sales at newegg. I doubt I would have gotten this drive if it was listed for 329 when I was shopping.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Primary or Storage drive

Pros: Very speedy drive. It is the stereotypical 10k RPM drive.

Cons: A little noisy for my taste, but I'm a little spoiled on solid state drives now.

Other Thoughts: I run this as a storage drive. I use a SSD for my operating system and whatever flavor of the month game I'm playing. I chose to run this drive for storage because I still like to have multiple games installed. I have zero performance concerns when installing and playing a game off this drive. Great product.

5 out of 5 eggs1st Raptor will not be last

Pros: 10000 RPM... need I say more. Not quite on par with SSD in terms of read/write but for the price and capacity it's a good choice for those applications you want to load quick. I've seen loading times in various games reduced to fractions in comparison to my older and I mean OLD 7200 HDD.

Cons: $$ per GB is still a cringe factor for me....

Other Thoughts: These make a great addition to a gaming system. The transfer speed is good enough to show vast improvement from previous systems I've had and moderate enough in price to feel affordable. SSD's are just a bit out of reach and this is the middle ground...

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drives

Pros: Fast
Cheaper than SSD with more capacity.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these drives to put in a RAID 0. They benchmark at about 295 MB/s read. I also have a Crucial RealSSD 300 128GB boot drive that benchmarks at about 355 MB/s. These two Velociraptors raided aren't much slower, but have 10X the capacity.

1 out of 5 eggsBAD VALUE

Pros: Makes cool noises

Cons: I can't tell the difference from my 7200 RPM drive. I RMA'd this after about a week.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this drive. If you do a little research you can find a larger capacity 7200 RPM drive which will have a better internal data rate than this VelociRaptor. Or you should spend a little extra and get an SSD. If you want a high performance drive you probably wont be satisfied with anything less than SSD, just be sure to shop for reliability.
