Dual processor - Twice the processing power delivers best-in-class performance for demanding Enterprise applications.

RAFF - Our fourth generation RAFF technology includes sophisticated electronics to monitor the drive and correct both linear and rotational vibration for up to a 60% performance improvement in high vibration environments over the previous generation of drives.

IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise, and vibration in active seek modes without degrading performance.

StableTrac - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations. (750 GB and above)

Multi-axis shock sensor - Automatically detects the subtlest shock events and compensates to protect the data.

RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER) - Prevents drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives.

Third generation dynamic fly height - Each read-write head's fly height is adjusted in real time for optimum reliability.

Thermal extended burn-in test - Each drive is put through extended burn-in testing with thermal cycling to ensure reliable operation.

NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) - WD RE3 Enterprise SATA drives utilize PMR technology to achieve even greater areal density, reliability, and design margin.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid drives

Pros: Ordered 4 of these now and all are running without issues. Drives were surface tested and in A/V dual Xeon system running with no issues. I'll be buying more once they go back on sale.

Cons: None for me.

Other Thoughts: Although these drives have a lot of hours on them I trust them as much as any I own. These are well made drives and I I'll bet they out last my newer one's.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

Pros: Passed built-in S.M.A.R.T. short and long tests upon arrival with flying colors (no errors). S.M.A.R.T. data upon arrival indicates -zero- reallocated sectors, zero Raw_Read_Error_Rate, zero Seek_Error_Rate, zero Spin_Retry_Count, zero Calibration_Retry_Count, zero Reallocated_Event_Count, zero Current_Pending_Sector, zero Offline_Uncorrectable, zero UDMA_CRC_Error_Count, and zero Multi_Zone_Error_Rate. Runs reasonably cool (34-35C) when in a properly ventilated case.

Cons: Arrived with 30,000+ Power-On Hours. Not great, but pretty much as I expected. (See below.)

Other Thoughts: I'm amazed by all of the nonsense contained in the reviews of this thing here.

Firstly, if you have critical data that ain't backed up, then DO NOT put it ONLY onto a refurbished drive. Buy a fresh new drive (with full warranty) instead. Doing otherwise is just dumb.

Some people are apparently under the mis-impression that the term "refurbished", when applied to hard drives, means that somewhere somebody was tasked to open the thing up, fish out the worn parts and replace them with new parts. Kids, that ain't how it works. These things are factory sealed and stay that way, forever. Opening them, other than in meticulous clean-room environments, would effectively destroy them. And nobody is going to pay to have a trained high-tech worker open all of these USED drives up and spend who-knows-how-long fiddling with each one. Is just isn't economical, e.g. for drives like these, which are being resold for less than fifty bucks apiece. Really, when it comes to hard drives, the term "refurbished" just means "used, but properly tested before being resold".

I'm using the (good) one that I got as a backup drive for my main drive. That's a good use for a "refurbished" drive.

Also, some people here have bemoaned the high Power-On-Hours. Well, hey! Guess what! These are used _enterprise_ drives. That means that they most probably came out of servers which with left running, 24/7 for LONG periods of time. This should come as no surprise to anyone. Somebody (Dell?) has a server farm someplace, and when their drives get up about, say, 30K power on hours, they swap them out, install new ones, and then sell off the old ones.

Mine arrived with slightly more than 30K power on hours *and* with less than 800 Start_Stop_Count(s). That clearly indicates that this was hardly ever power cycled (which is actually a good thing... power cycling is one of the things that causes drives to break down eventually).

Anyway, I am OK with that 30K POH. I expected something like that when I placed my order, and I think that others here are silly if they expected otherwise. Yes, that *is* about 3 and 1/2 years of power on time, but so what? These WD *black* drives have original warranties of FIVE YEARS, and they are built like tanks. I would rather have one of these refurb black drives than a brand new WD Blue drive (with just 2 year warranty) at the same price. I expect the black drives to last, on average, well past 50K POH, and hopefully, until they become obsolete just based on newer/cheaper/ higher capacity drives becoming available.

2 out of 5 eggs50/50

Pros: -Decent Price
-Fast Shipping

Cons: -1 Drive Dead out of the box, makes clacking noises
-Other drive has bad sectors on it, possible to map out

Two drives purchased. Cheap price and you get what you pay for it. Box they came in was dropped for sure as I saw the marks on the side. Left on my porch so I did not see the driver dropping them off or I would have re-fused them. Not worth my time to contact tech support to get them sent back.

Going to buy to bigger drives at a local shop so I know I can talk to someone about them.

Other Thoughts: I suggest that even though I have bought these in the past and they are decent for the money, BUY NEW. Safer bet and most times you get a better warranty and better product.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Cheap enterprise HD drive with large space to fill.

Cons: Louder than typical hard drives, sounds similar to an old velociraptor 10,000rpm drive.

Other Thoughts: Formatted, installed o/s and ran WD diagnostics and no errors. It's a bit noisier than some of my other hard drives, and comes with Dell sticker but would buy another as long as it doesn't come DOA. I've had the best luck with WD hard drives over the years even buying refurbs.

4 out of 5 eggsI Got A Good One

Pros: Upon unpacking this drive, because of the reviews here and short refurb warranty, I immediately ran a full WD Data Lifeguard drive diagnostic test on the drive. After several hours of testing, it fully passed, no faults, no issues. Drive was warm to the touch, but that's to be expected. Installed Windows 7 on it, and so far it seems to perform as well as the original WD Black that came out of the machine.

Cons: Only a 90-day warranty - new ones still carry a 5-year warranty. If labels are important to you, this one says Dell - not Western Digital. But it's still a WD Black RE3 Enterprise Drive.

Other Thoughts: Obviously from the reviews, you could get a bad one - so it's the luck of the draw. This one seems fine so far - hopefully it will stay that way. For the price, it's a great drive.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy!

Pros: Cheap, that's about it.

Cons: High usage time, loud, nearing end of life.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased two of these drives from Newegg recently (one from the Newegg E bay store and one from Newegg.com) The one purchased on E bay had over 27,000 hours on it and the one purchased on the Newegg website had about 31,000 hours on it. The only reason I have not returned both of them is because they are being used in RAID 1, so if one fails my data isn't lost. My guess is that they were used in servers or corporate computers that were running constantly, because they aren't that old. Its surprising that Dell would refurbish these without wiping the SMART somehow.

Make sure you have a RAID 1 setup, or do frequent backups, because these aren't going to last.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: None

Cons: I purchased 4 of these drives,
all of them show more than 30,000 hours (3-4 years!) of power on time,
3 of them failed within a month.
