3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 2 of the 3 we bought work fine.

Cons: 1 of them makes a squealing noise when turned on, and I've sent in a RMA request.

1 out of 5 eggs1st drive DOA, 2nd lasted only a few months

Pros: Large capacity, reasonably priced.

Cons: First one was DOA and replaced immediately through the retailer.

The second one lasted for about three months before completely failing without notice. It was file-vault 2 encrypted drive, and suddenly it stopped recognizing the drive/asking for the password. Not an OS problem, and pulling the drive and running diagnostics on a Windows machine indicates a faulty drive. WD warranty service is not helpful (but I imagine no drive warranty services are, given the proof-of-purchase requirements and shipping costs, especially since I bought the drive in Canada and am now in the US).

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsWorked Great....for a while

Pros: Good price for a 1TB drive. Worked great out of the box. 2 Year warranty

Cons: Only lasted 15 months.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive in January 2013. It has worked flawlessly as a backup drive for me over the past 15 months or so. Suddenly today it started clicking and beeping at me. Tried to reseat it in it's enclosure and tried it on different computers. Same result. I opened an RMA with Western Digital. Waiting on the replacement now.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Reliable manufacturer (IMO, been using only WD for many many years now with absolutely zero issues).

Large capacity and performance for a very reasonable price.

Cons: None yet, 3 weeks since I installed it and still going strong.

Other Thoughts: This was purchased to replace a dying laptop drive for a Dell Inspiron 5720 laptop.

2 out of 5 eggsEarly Failure

Pros: See previous review.

Cons: This review is from: Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive
Pros: It is a high capacity drive... for those of you who actually use a full TB of storage.

Cons: This drive failed in under 2 years with nominal non-raid use. WD claims to give a 2 year warranty for this product, but it looks like it would be rather challenging and time consuming to get them to honor it. In other words, probably not worth it. WD used to be a quality name, but I am beginning to wonder these days.

I have not seen a hard drive fail since the early 90s until now. Hmmm.

Manufacturer Response:

"Regardless of the reason for your drives defect, we stand by our product,..."
As if to imply that I in some way did something out of the ordinary to cause hard drive failure. Again, nominal use. See the previous review.

Your offer to replace the drive came 8 days after I posted my review. I had long since replaced the drive in my daughter's laptop that she needed for school. The new drive cost me less money shipped than it would be worth to me to deal with your customer service.

Stand behind your product with inline quality or before it's shipped. Other reviewers have also reported early failure.

Thank you for your response.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great, no issues for one year now.

Cons: None, but requires tinkering to disable idle head parking (WDIDLE tool). This is supposed to lower the chance of drive failure.
