1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with Vista

Pros: Can't think of any,

Cons: Windows Vista won't run Windows Update after cloning to an Advanced format drive like this one. Windows 7 can have the same problem but there is suppose to be a fix for it. Don't know about Windows 8 but I would stay away from Advanced Format Drives it I were you.

Other Thoughts: Windows Vista won't run Windows Update after cloning to an Advanced format drive like this one. Windows 7 can have the same problem but there is suppose to be a fix for it. Don't know about Windows 8 but I would stay away from Advanced Format Drives it I were you.

1 out of 5 eggsNot good for PS3

Pros: Large capacity for the money

Cons: This hard drive is not good for PS3. I put it in and my games stuttered and my video service dropped frame. Tried to reinstall the software to no avail. Putting the old drive back instantly solved all problems. The hard drive is not good for PS3 at least.

Other Thoughts: The other reviewers said it has some constant spin-down problems. I think it's very real problem and it severely interferes with the way PS3 game and video service work. Maybe on a different platform where data are always been accessed (not just buffered in the RAM) it can work better?

2 out of 5 eggsdrive failure

Pros: .

Cons: 1 of 2 drives installed in a NAS box failed after the first day of use. Other drive is working ok in the same box.

It was not an overheating problem (SMART on good drive says 38C max).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD for PS3 HDD

Pros: *Great size for what it's being used for.
*Very quiet HDD (You absolutely will not hear a thing).
*Lots of space for everything such as game saves, music, pictures, etc.
*HDD was readable with the PS3 with little to no difficulties in a matter of seconds.

Cons: *A bit slower download speeds than with the standard 80GB HDD.

Other Thoughts: Aside from the slower download speeds, this is a great drive. I caught it on sale this week and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. :)

3 out of 5 eggsDo not buy for gaming

Pros: Works fine for storage or as a primary drive. Cons become noticeable when used as a secondary drive

Cons: The previous reviewer "Matos" explained the cons accurately and clearly. This drive causes serious micro stuttering when used as a secondary drive for gaming. The drive spins down and the the read/write head parks too fast during idle periods when the game is not actively reading data from the drive. I verified that this was the issue by running a third party program that reads/write a small file to the drive at 30 second intervals so the drive doesn't spin down. All the stuttering during games went away as long as I had that program running in the background.

Other Thoughts: Many users will rate this review not helpful because they installed this drive as a primary drive or have an application running that reads regularly from the drive so it never spins down. In this situation, you will never notice the cons that I and many other users experience during gaming. But the problem is very real in our setups. I appreciate efforts to implement "advanced" power saving technology but when it interferes with something as basic as gaming when used as a secondary drive, it is a major con.

I am writing this review in response to the manufacturer's previous statement that this is not a typical experience. While this is not a problem experienced by all users, it is a very typical experience for those who have it installed as a secondary drive and wish to install their games on it. I am happy with the drive in all other aspects, but this is a deal breaker for me and I wish I had purchased a different drive.

5 out of 5 eggsNearly 2 months, still working great.

Pros: Lots of storage space, yet compact.

Great for an external enclosure: 5400 RPM is plenty fast for this.

I have experienced no negative issues with this drive.

I am no fan boy, but in my experience, Seagate drives have never failed on me, and I have never had a DOA from Seagate. Wish I could say the same about Samsung, Toshiba, Western Digital, and especially Hitachi (AKA HGST, a Western Digital company~they still suck even after WD bought them! Had to recently replace a HDD on a new laptop for a friend with a Hitachi drive.)

Cons: If used as a boot drive, 5400 RPM is a bit slow, and 8MB cache is way to low, but not docking an egg because it does exactly what it was designed to do.

FYI: If you need a boot drive, I would personally opt for a 7200 RPM version, but this can run at acceptable speeds for a boot drive.

Other Thoughts: I only use Seagate drives these days: the only brand that has never failed on me, both at work or at home.

I bought this drive to replace a 3.5" 1 TB Buffalo external HDD, in an effort to downsize.

I got this while on sale, at $74. Normal price as of 3/13/13 is $89.00...a little high, but you get what you paid for. Stay away from Hitachi hard drives (AKA HGST, nowadays).

***If something negative happens with this drive, I definitely will update this review.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely unreliable. Done with Western Digital.

Pros: When it worked, it worked well.

Cons: I originally had purchased the 12.5mm version of this drive (WD10TPVT) and it worked for a little over a year. It left me in the lurch, but fortunately was still under warranty. WD sent this model (WD10JPVT) as a replacement. I installed in in November of 2012 and it failed on March 8th. Absolutely zero confidence in this drive at this point. I've RMA'd the drive and will use the replacement as either a paperweight or in an enclosure for data that I can "absolutely afford to lose".

Other Thoughts: Replacing with an SSD. I've had it with Western Digital. They once were a great company. They clearly are just churning out garbage at this point.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGood so far, but 3 yr warranty is needed

Pros: Good brand name and reliable model. Rotational speed means less heat, and hopefully longer life.

Cons: Relatively short warranty (2 yrs. versus 3 yrs). Capacity could be better (this is 2013, not 2011). Rotational speed could be faster (5400 rpm versus 7200 rpm).

Other Thoughts: I only trust WD at this point. I used to like Seagate, but they have trailed in reliability. There is too much industry consolidation, leaving fewer choices. That, combined with the floods in Thailand, became an excuse to raise prices and cut warranty length. Pretty short-sighted, IMO. This industry is practically begging SSDs to make them obsolete. Now, it's only a matter of time....
