5 out of 5 eggsGreat boot drive

Pros: This is my second raptor. I bought this one after my first one died after about four years. These hard drives are super fast and western digital has been reliable for me. I would recommend to anyone as a boot drive.

Cons: my first one died after 4 years but I got alot of time in on it before it did.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, reliable (so far), not too loud, bought this to put my OS on along a few programs and what have you and so far runs great, cheaper and little more space then similar ssd

Cons: Not ssd fast but i knew that before i bought it (it does use platters after all), isn't crazy loud but is audible if i read/write a file to it sometimes but not annoying (least to me).

4 out of 5 eggsAs always...

Cons: None that impact my user experience.

Other Thoughts: Since having used my first raptors in 08 I've yet to buy another 7200 rpm drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive for the Price

Pros: Pretty Fast considering its an HDD not SSD
10k RPM
Good Price to Performance (Around 50 Cents a Gigabyte)
2.5inch Drive in reality

Cons: Has to have a heat-spreader that makes it a 3.5 drive
Not as fast as an SSD
Price to performance is only good on the lower sizes, the upper sizes still run about the cost of an upper level SSD

Other Thoughts: Overall I am happy with the drive, it was bought on a budget system because we already had a data drive but wanted something faster than the standard 7200RPM drives for some games and boot. Its actually quite a fast boot time and loads games pretty fast for being mechanical and runs cooler than I was expecting. I thought with the heat-spreader it would reach like 50C+ but I have honestly not seen it in CPUID exceed 40C with no special fans blowing on it or anything in a small Case. I do recommend this drive to those on a budget because this can make a budget build not seem like a budget build because of the speeds you will be getting. Its no SSD, but its closer than you would think.

Case: BitFenix Prodigy
Processor/GPU: A10-7850k @ 4.5ghz GPU at 960mhz
Ram: Gskill Trident X 2400
Motherboard: ASrock MITX A88X
HDD's: 150gb 10k RPM Velociraptor and Seagate Barracuda 750gb
Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 240mm
PSU: Thermaltake Smart 550Watt Bronze

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive

Pros: One of the very fastest SATA drives on the market. Fantastic access times and throughput. FIVE year warranty is a major plus! The Velociraptors represent the pinnacle of spinning magnetic disc storage. A mirrored pair of these makes a fantastic operating system boot drive in my RHEL6 workstation.

Cons: The cost per GB on Velociraptors is higher than most others. I managed to score these on a $59 newegg special. It is a less compelling buy at $99 in my opinion.

Other Thoughts: I'm running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 on my workstation. I'm using a pair of these 150 GB velociraptor's for the OS, and a pair of the 1 TB velociraptors for /home and I'm very pleased with the result. I'm using the Linux kernel software RAID, as I believe it to be superior to a hardware RAID controller.

These are exceptionally quick, I plan to keep these around for a long time. Enterprise SSD's are very expensive, and consumer SSD's seem to have a lot of reliability and firmware problems. My data is too important to risk on not-quite-ready bleeding edge technology, so these mature and stable velociraptors fit my needs perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Low Cost

Pros: Price is perfect for what you get.

Cons: See other thoughts...

Other Thoughts: It of them I purchased started throwing SMART errors. Went to the WD support site, RMA-ed. Needless to say, but Western Digital has some of the best customer support I have ever received. RMA process has been painless. They sent back a drive back with 2-Day Air UPS shipping. Awesome, awesome, and awesome customer service!

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Good VelociRaptor

Pros: While still being a platter HDD, I have had great service from the WD VelociRaptor series. This is my fourth one and probably my last spinning primary hard drive. Great speed on this model combined with the level of reliability I've experienced with the VelociRaptor series.

Cons: None to mention. Most people comment about what a product is not in this section, which strikes me as being rather ludicrous.

Other Thoughts: While it seems almost old school these days to use a traditional HDD for a primary drive. I have had two SSD's fail within several months. Both Samsung models. 830, 840's.

I chose this route due to experience and am not really interested in reloading my system every few months.

4 out of 5 eggsProgression Review

Pros: Much, much Faster than a standard 7200 rpm (sata III) disc. Boot time from power on to actual use is still less than 60 secs. Write (copy) over 360 Mbs, My old standard 7200 rpm drive was 130 Mbs (copy). After 4 years of use as my primary drive it is still very fast, quiet and keeps cool. I will not replace with a solid state drive until this one gives out. By then I think they (ssd's) will be even cheaper. Also perfect size (GB's) for a primary HD. Like they say... If it ain't broke, then don't fix it! Overall I'm still very happy with the WD Velocraptor.

Cons: It's not a solid state drive. Not as fast, or quiet, not sure about heat on ssd's. Average ssd (sata III) boasts 480 Mbs write speed. So, my WD velociraptor has very good bench marks, much higher than a a standard 7200 and not far behind a ssd.

My unit was a bit more expensive at the time I bought it ($160.00, 4 yrs ago).

Other Thoughts: If I were to build a new PC today, I would definitely go with a SSD. As you would be able to buy a 120-180 GB ssd drive for the same price or a few more bucks.
