4 out of 5 eggsFailed in my iMac without Warning

Pros: Quick and quiet.

Cons: Fails fast at end of life.

Other Thoughts: After a faultless lifetime of near 37,000 hours in my iMac from late 2006, the iMac basically ground to a halt.

Here's the SMART:

3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0003 196 185 021 Pre-fail Always - 5175
4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 097 097 000 Old_age Always - 3098
9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 050 050 000 Old_age Always - 36843
12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 118
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 117 098 000 Old_age Always - 33
195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x000e 050 001 000 Old_age Always - 1005909

The SMART seems to think it has not failed. I will look into this more. 37,000 hours seems like a pretty deal.

The ECC recovered may tell the story here.

4 out of 5 eggsLasted 5 years

Pros: This came in my wife's iMac purchased in 4/2006. According to the sticker on the drive it was manufactured in Jan 2006. Everything worked fine with no evidence of problems, until...

Cons: ...with no warning of trouble at all, the drive just stopped yesterday. No clicking noises, no errors, just no power or spin up at all. Tried the 12+ hours in the freezer trick to no avail. I had almost everything backed up but am hoping to get it alive again long enough to copy a few important files from yesterday that hadn't backed up yet.

Other Thoughts: This saw nearly 5 years of always-on use, and it held up very well until it died. I've had hard drives die before but never so suddenly and without some sort of warning. I guess now I'll add regular Clonezilla images to my backup plan so I don't lose so much when the drive goes bad.

5 out of 5 eggsNice HDD

Pros: Relatively quiet seeking, fast, pretty cheap, stays cool.

Cons: None here, but the guy that was talking about the speed operating at 5400RPM's, and that feature cannot be disabled on AMD setups, i hope that info is false.

Other Thoughts: Hope this is running @ its correct speed.

3 out of 5 eggsI feel cheated

Pros: This drive is very cheap and very quiet. I can't even hear disk access with the box sitting only 2 feet away from me. Installation was no hassle.

Cons: After running various HD diagnostic utilities, it was revealed to me that this drive operates at 5400RPM. I couldn't quite figure this out until SiSoft told me that "acoustic management is enabled" which may "reduce performance". Acoustic management slows the HD speed down to reduce noise. What's worse, if you're using an AMD setup you cannot turn acoustic management off according to WD. *Some* Intel setups have a setting in bios to let the drive run at full speed, but with AMD setups you're out of luck. That's just poor design.

Other Thoughts: I give it three stars because of price, ease of installation, and brand reputation. The 7200 RPM specification however, should be asteriked with a disclaimer.
